The New World Primer

An introduction of a 4th Edition Dungons and Dragons Campaign Setting
By Ross Payton

The New World Primer is the first supplement of a campaign setting about a newly discovered continent, suitable for most fantasy worlds. The first expedition from the old world has just landed on the shores of the New World to start the first settlement. The name and exact location of the continent is left undescribed so you can more easily fit the New World in your campaign.

The Primer focuses on the first major expedition to the new world. A few dozen colonists, including a brave party of heroes (i.e. the player characters), band together as they try to tame the savage wilderness, make peace with the native tribes and establish the first settlement. The supplement provides all you need to get started in the New World.

The Primer will be released as a free PDF on the Role Playing Public Radio website 30 days after the ransom is met.

The New World Primer includes:

A description of the New World. This is only the first supplement for the New World campaign setting, but the primer will describe the region around the colony. Highlights include a brief history of ancient Lemuria, descriptions of the Gray Fang and Black Raven tribes, Grippli Island and more!

An overview of the colony’s first months. Just surviving long enough to turn into a fully fledged settlement is a challenge worthy of the greatest heroes. Finding a reliable source of fresh water, dealing with the native tribes and keeping the mysterious raiders from overruning the colony will take every bit of skill and bravery on the part of your players.

A new playable race: The Grippli. Naïve, energetic, optimistic and naturally outgoing, the grippli are eager to make new friends and explore the New World

5 new monsters:
• Lemurian skeleton: A citizen of ancient Lemuria reanimated as a foot soldier for the Black Raven Trive.
• Grippli hunter: The bravest warriors of Grippli society.
• Grippli king: The leader caste of the Grippli.
• Raven Mocker: A magical being that collects souls for the Black Raven Tribe
• Yekyua: druidic familiars

5 new feats:
• Summon Yekyua
• Black Raven Acolyte
• Friend of the Gray Fangs
• Artisan

New Backgrounds: The members of the expedition joined for a variety of reasons. Some were running from their past while others sought a better future in a new land.

New Rituals:
• Conjure Water
• Summon Raven Mocker
• Bind Souls
• Call Lemurian Skeletons

A map of the region around the colony

Adventure hooks for heroic tier characters: Your players can go on a totally different path than the RPPR crew. Perhaps they want to plunge into dungeon crawling or take over one of the tribes or start their own business.

The Lost Totem: An introductory adventure for level 1-2 characters. As the players explore the wilderness surrounding the colony, they find a totem lost for countless generations. the Both the Gray Fang and Black Raven tribe want the totem. Can the heroes prevent all out war from breaking out?

I got my books from Gencon so no problems there. You should contact them and explain your problem. Probably a one time accident.

Anyone a good PHP coder? If so, I can point you to the thread on the SMF forums where I found the code for the dice roller. I don't have time to figure out how to implement quoting rolled dice but maybe someone else can.

Making an untrained Computer Use check? You walk a dangerous line, sir.

SIR I WILL HAVE YOU KNOW I AM TRAINED IN COMPUTER USE. YOU HAVE OFFENDED MY HONOR AND I CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL.  ROLL FOR INITIATIVE.

I think that puts me at -3.

Quoting the dice rolls doesn't really work, as you can see, Ross.

no one tells me these things. The dice roller is an unofficial hack so lemme see if I can jury rig some better code or something.

Rolls for Computer Use skill check.

Rolling 1d20:
(16): Total = 16

Let's not forget the 4chan classic Special Contain Procedures: http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/main

For example: http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-914
Quote
Item #: SCP-914

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:

Only personnel who submit a formal request and receive approval from site command may operate 914. SCP-914 is to be kept in research cell 109-B with two guard personnel on duty at all times. Any researchers entering 109-B are to be accompanied by at least one guard for the entirety of testing. A full list of tests to be carried out must be given to all guard personnel on duty; any deviation from this list will result in termination of testing, forcible removal of personnel from 109-B, and formal discipline at site command’s discretion.

WARNING: at this time, no testing of biological matter is allowed. Refer to document 109-B:117. Applying the “Rough” setting to explosive materials is not advised.

Description:

SCP-914 is a large clockwork device weighing several tons and covering an area of eighteen square meters, consisting of screw drives, belts, pulleys, gears, springs and other clockwork. It is incredibly complex, consisting of over eight million moving parts comprised mostly of tin and copper, with some wooden and cloth items observed. Observation and probing have showed no electronic assemblies or any form of power other than the “Mainspring” under the “Selection Panel”. Two large booths (10’x7’x7’) are connected via copper tubes to the main body of SCP-914, labeled “Intake” and “Output”. Between them is a copper panel with a large knob with a small arrow attached. The words Rough, Coarse, 1:1, Fine, Very Fine are positioned at points around the knob. Below the knob is a large “Key” that winds the “Mainspring”.

When an object is placed in the Intake Booth, a door slides shut, and a small bell sounds. If the knob is turned to any position and the key wound up, SCP-914 will “Refine” the object in the booth. No energy is lost in the process, and the object appears to be in stasis until the Output Booth door is opened. Intense observation and testing have not shown how SCP-914 accomplishes this, and no test object has ever been observed inside SCP-914 during the “refining” process. The process takes between five and ten minutes, depending on the size of the object being refined.

The Left Behind series. Read the Slackivist's extensive commentary (page by page!) for reasons why it sucks.  http://exharpazo.blogspot.com/2007/01/index-to-slactivists-left-behind.html

This is the first commentary of the first novel http://slacktivist.typepad.com/slacktivist/2003/10/left_behind_pre.html

Quote
Left Behind: Pretrib Porno

Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days, by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. Tyndale House Publishers, 1995.

Pages 1-3.

The first words of Left Behind are "Rayford Steele," the protagonist's name.

It sounds like a porn star's name -- and in a sense it is. The Left Behind series is dispensational porno, but it's more than that. One of the most disturbing things about this book is the way LaHaye and Jenkins portray men, women and the relationships between them.

Note that Tim LaHaye's wife is something of a professional misogynist. She runs the 500,000-member "Concerned Women for America" -- jokingly referred to by its critics as "Ladies Against Women." For years, while Beverly LaHaye's husband pastored a church in San Diego, Mrs. L. spent most of her time 3,000 miles away, in Washington, D.C., running a large organization committed to, among other things, telling women they should stay at home and sacrifice their careers for their husbands. She is not an ironic woman and doesn't seem to find any of this inconsistent. (Nor, as I found out firsthand, does she appreciate jokes about the Freudian implications of the view from her L'Enfante Plaza office window. Sometimes the Washington Monument is just a cigar.)

Our porn star hero, Rayford Steele, interacts with women just like any porn star does -- minus, of course, the sex. It's all about dominance, exploitation, titillation and the stroking of -- in this case -- egos.

The character Rayford Steele is, like the authors, no longer a young man. Younger authors might not have been compelled to give their protagonists names -- "Steele" and "Buck" -- that seem such a blatant assertion of male virility. Bev is apparently not the only LaHaye who seems oblivious to phallic imagery.

If you're thinking I'm reading too much into all this, that this theme isn't really as present in the text as I'm making it out to be, consider the opening lines:

Rayford Steele's mind was on a woman he had never touched. With his fully loaded 747 on autopilot ...

That's more than just subtext.
