General Chaos / Welp, guess I'll be seeing ya...
« on: July 08, 2012, 04:01:13 PM »
Don't know why, but felt some urge to let people know that I would be away for a while.  Not that I thought it was necessary for people to know or anything (because I'm sure you will all get along quite fine without me), but maybe it's just that it's a cool thing and I wanted to share it.  I'll have super limited internet access for the next six weeks or so as I'll be headed to South Africa.  I'm pretty excited for the cultural experiences and whatnot, and I guess I'll catch you all on the flip-side.  Take care...

General Chaos / Humble Indie Bundle V - Buy it!
« on: May 31, 2012, 01:38:56 PM »
So every time there is a new HIB, I have been continuously floored with how it is "the best one ever!"  V is no exception...

Amnesia
Limbo
Psychonauts
Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery

And Bastion if you pay over the average

Plus ALL of the soundtracks, Bastion's alone is pretty much worth the price...

Not to mention the fact that if it's anything like what it has been in the past, they'll add stuff in a week or week and a half...

RPGs / Whirlwind RPG Tour for Noobs
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:21:03 PM »
Just had this idea for something fun I would like to do next quarter with some friends (as I might actually have time with 4 day weekends every week :D).  Basically I want to run my friends through some of the "quintessential" RPG systems/games.  This would be for a group of pals that haven't played before, and I was wondering what systems/scenarios people think would be good to include.  I figured I would do a standard dungeon crawl in DnD, but didn't really have much for sure beyond that.  Anyway, I'm trying to go more "classic/quintessential," and not so much "stereotypical," if that makes sense...

Thoughts?

General Chaos / Large Storage MP3 Players
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:54:31 AM »
So my 80GB Zune from about 6 years ago seems to have finally crashed.  As such I am looking at replacing it in the near future.  Having not followed MP3 players much in the past few years, it seems that I do not have a very good feel for the market.  Basically I wouldn't mind a straight replacement, but what I really want is a) at least 60GB of space, and b) buttons (i.e. no touch screen).  With some pretty quick looking around it seems that the only thing to fit the bill would be the 160GB iPod classic (current model).  I don't necessarily have a problem with used, but I am pretty wary about it, and as I take good care of my stuff, I intend to have it last me a while.  Does anyone know of any other options I might have?

General Chaos / Ignore my complaining...
« on: January 22, 2012, 02:29:13 AM »
So I went back and forth on this for a while because I'm not usually one to make a fuss, but then I figured, whatever, it's the internet, it's like your responsibility to whine and moan right?

Anyway, physics lab reports are a lot of work and I don't want to do mine right now...

Especially knowing I have two more reports to do after this...

Classes that cram an entire year's worth of material into a single quarter suck...

That is all.  Please feel free to tell me how stupid I am for bemoaning life, or just ignore this and move on...

General Chaos / Gaming/General Keyboard/Mouse Recommendations
« on: December 25, 2011, 10:54:18 PM »
Hope you are all having a lovely holiday season.  I was curious if anyone had recommendations for a good keyboard and mouse.  Basically I have some money from gifts that I'd like to use to buy something for my new computer and have taken a look at a few things from Logitech just because I've had good experiences with stuff from them in the past (the G110 was looking tempting especially considering I have a 35% off coupon code)...

Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts to share?

General Chaos / RPPR Minecraft Thread
« on: November 25, 2011, 09:02:38 PM »
I figured it might a good idea to move this out of the Vidja Game thread to it's own.  Basically just general discussion on the server and what's what.

Was someone doing something with the trees in the back of the "base?"  I was clearing stuff out and discovered a torch up at the top and thought someone might be using them.  If so, I apologize.

Anyway, I also thought we might be able to figure out some way to organize some type of project descriptor so people don't accidentally mess up another's plans too much...

General Chaos / Random Question
« on: November 24, 2011, 04:57:46 PM »
Greetings fellow forumites...

This is somewhat of an odd question, but hey, we're all somewhat odd people.  For a super brief background, I attend UC Davis and you may or not be aware of some craziness that is going on there.  We have been told numerous times that "the world is watching," and I was curious just how of an accurate statement this was.  So I turn to my internet "sources" with a simple question: have you heard about what's going on/how much have you heard/how much do you care?  Quite frankly, I don't have really strong feelings in any direction and was just curious what kind of "reach," per se, the news had...

Thanks...

General Chaos / I spend too much time on these forums...
« on: October 02, 2011, 01:08:12 AM »
Well, not really, they're awesome.  Anyway, I think it's probably just because I'm bored sitting in a hotel room, but I was trolling through the forum stats and looking at the crazy drop-offs when it comes to activity.  Granted my numbers are nowhere near as impressive (or insane, depending on how you look at it) as Tad's or Ross's, but still, I can't believe I've been logged in for 26 total days and have 1,200 posts...

Anyway, I guess if I'm going to try and redeem this, excellent job Ross and everyone else.  A community has been created that's fun to chat with and keeps people around for a long time...

RPGs / Random RPG: Fireborn
« on: October 02, 2011, 12:47:31 AM »
So I was at a Half-Price Books today and an RPG book caught my eye.  Fireborn, and with a name like that, how could I not check it out.  A quick glance at the back cover revealed it centered around the idea of dragons reincarnated as modern day folks.  Needless to say, I was hooked.  The deal was sealed when I found that it actually seemed to have a non-standard die system (i.e. not D20, ORE, or something I had heard of before).  Googling it at home I found that apparently it was pretty well received.  In any case, I'll give it a flip through, post some impressions, and who knows?  Maybe even put up some character gen threads or a Skype game depending on how it looks.

My only regret is that I had to pass up Wizards and Gunslingers to get it...

General Chaos / Misc. Blogging Type Question
« on: September 08, 2011, 02:24:11 AM »
So a couple friends and I are just beyond the rough planning stages of a new project.  The idea are somewhat informative, entertaining, and likely a bit personal bits on geek/nerd culture, with the intention of being both accessible to those wanting to learn more about this subculture as well as entertaining (and maybe informative) to those already "in the know."  In other words, it's a bunch of geeks/nerds writing about what we love and why.

What I'm looking for here (at the moment at least) is anyone who has used (or at least looked a bit at) both Wordpress and Blogger (the free accounts).  For anyone who has: What are the major differences between the two and do you think one is better than the other?  Right now we're just looking at writing but there is the possibility for expanding to podcasts or other content (but that would be a decent ways down the road.

Thanks for any thoughts or help...

General Chaos / Major League Gaming

Don't know how many Starcraft II followers there are, but I just spent the weekend at an awesome MLG Anaheim.  Saw some great games and cool players and casters.  Anyone else watch online?

General Chaos / Anyone know about building computers?
« on: June 20, 2011, 04:32:25 AM »
So one of my projects over the summer is going to be building a gaming computer for myself (hopefully).  I've talked to some people and done a lot of reading online, but I figure the more sources I hear from, the better.  Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?  I'm mainly trying to figure out a case and motherboard now as I've pretty much figured out what I'm thinking about for the other components.  If you have some advice but need more information, go ahead and let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help...

RPGs / Misc. Question
« on: June 15, 2011, 08:07:59 PM »
So for my D&D campaign, I'm drawing a complete blank on what I think "is a thing," but I could be completely off-base...

Is there a word for a shop/person that sells spell components/stuff for rituals?  I tried a Google search and could really find anything.  I keep thinking apothecary, but that's technically more for medicine, and I thought there was a word more specifically for what I'm looking for, but once again, I could be completely wrong...
