Because it was on sale I picked up Payday 2. I am so laughably bad at it.

Well I am coming from the West coast and between work and family and my wallet I fear I would not be able to attend both (would that I could). Still leaning towards checking out Origins but need to mull it over a bit more.

General Chaos / Edge of the Empire - Drunk and Ugly Life Day Special
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:27:01 PM »
It might be a bit uncool to point to a different actual play podcast from the forums of an actual play podcast but The Drunk and Ugly and RPPR seem to be on friendly turns so I am doing it. Most of the Drunk and Ugly APs are not to my taste (not through any fault of their own mind you, I think they do a good job) but I can recommend the entire run of their Star Wars Edge of the Empire actual plays groups under the title Fate Ascendant. It is currently in hiatus but for Christmas they dropped a "special life day episode" that was quite funny. If is worth a listen even if you don't listen to the rest of the episodes.

Playing a bit of the Long Dark in sandbox. Having a good time and given the snowy weather we have had in Portland seemed thematically appropriate. Some annoying things but over all enjoyable.

General Chaos / Origins vs GenCon
« on: January 04, 2016, 05:43:06 PM »
This may seem like a stupid question but I am considering going to Origins this year as opposed to GenCon. I went to GenCon in 2014 and had a lot of fun and have decided I want to do a convention this year but wonder if I should branch out and see something new. GenCon is its own crazy thing but honestly I felt at times like it was too large. I want to go again at some point but I think it would be interesting to go to a different event that still has a lot of folks and fun events to participate in but is not GenCon. My main focus is to play in RPGs although I do some table top gaming as well. I have zero interest in CCGs or miniatures games although I admit it was fun to walk through the halls at GenCon and see the different games I don't have any interest in just to see everyone playing them.

Anyone have thoughts on this or can speak to their own experiences at Origins? Alternatively I am not married to Origins so if anyone has other event recommendations in the US for a mid to large sized game events that take place in the later half of the year I would be interested in hearing about them and your experiences with them.

If you like audio recordings (and hey, this is the RPPR forums!), there is a very good recording of James's first collection, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, available for free on Librivox. The reader, Peter Yearsley, has a voice that I think perfectly captures James's restrained English academic style.

Here's the link: https://librivox.org/ghost-stories-of-an-antiquary-by-m-r-james/

For particular stories, my favorites from that collection include "Count Magnus" and "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad." But they're all excellent.

In 2008 (dear god that was a long time ago) the HP Lovecraft Film festival brought Robert Lloyd Parry over from England to do his live one man MR James show. It was great and there are very few videos online.

This is an excerpt from the Ash Tree.

Here is a link to his site, I might have to by some of the audio CDs.

I posit that any GM who cannot use this story should just go ahead and hang up their GM spurs.

General Chaos / Re: Delta Green kickstarter
« on: September 30, 2015, 11:38:38 PM »
I am not saying my reasoning is 100% rational exactly mind you but I reject your analogy to voting as this is not a one side wins contest but rather a funding drive.

I was not aware that Arc Dream is only creating books funded via this kickstarter and then folding up the Delta Green tent. Hearing that, honestly I must be much more of a casual fan than I had thought because I guess I don't care that much. I enjoy the Delta Green setting and the books and they have produced are high quality and I will likely acquire all they produce on some time frame (I have pretty much everything they have produced to date) but if they stopped production at some date in the future my life is not that greatly impacted. I can still run and play Delta Green games with out new material and of course there are many and varied games systems/settings that I can turn my attention to.

After thinking about it all day I guess one of the reason I was annoyed was largely internal. I had been waiting for the DG kickstarter for at least a year plus and backed it with in the first few hours of it launching but in examining the list of back rewards and future books I found very little of it held any interest for me and so felt a bit let down. This is childish reaction and I feel a bit sheepish now and I apologize to anyone having to read my rambling in this thread. I fully expect the kickstarter to be very successful and I wish the Arc Dream folks and backers good luck.

I had read update #2 and I get what they are trying to do and in many ways I agree with it. I don't actually want a lot of crap (I never want a shirt or a mug or a pin - please stop offering those) and I want quality content and I want the creators to get paid and not spend time on things that don't add a lot or any value. So in principle I see what they are doing and I actually do support it and think it will work.

On the other hand I just don't see a ton of personal value for me to back. Using the latest stretch goal as an example they are committing to add a new source book that they will sell. At 128 page they are pricing it as $15 for a PDF which I have to assume will be close to the retail value they will sell on Drive Through RPG so I don't think I will be getting it cheaper. So I am not getting a discount here as far as I can tell.

I don't even get much of a 'I helped bring this into the world' because that ship has sailed as this is not a bubble project.

I don't expect me not chipping in $50 is going to take the wind out of the sails of this monster so very likely the stretch goals will hit and cool stuff will get unlocked with out my help.

I will likely get back in $1 just to watch what is going on. As stated I may jump in at the last minute and either pick and choose some add ons or get in on one of the cheaper All PDF options.

My above counter arguments are not strong, I see that but honesty it is where I am at the moment. I was trying to think about what I would find compelling given their stated model and nothing came up. I guess if they had stretch goals that boosted content of the books (the Dracula Dossier did a ton of this but this is of course directly opposed to their core statement) or maybe were offering some discount on the add ons or maybe offered kickstarter only books that could not be obtained outside the campaign that might work but honestly each of those items has issues and I don't advocate any of them.
