Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: Cthulhu game for newbies?
« on: August 04, 2015, 11:25:54 AM »
I ran the Lonely Point Lighthouse scenario out of the The Island of Ignorance book from Golden Goblin press for some newer players and it worked pretty well. Basically it is sort of The Cask of Amontillado where the person locked in the walls is an undying deep one and is still alive but weak after 20 years in a wall. It works because it is a  locked room style scenario (they can't get off the island the lighthouse is on once things start to go to hell) that is low combat investigative game that is still pretty simple and linear and does not require a lot of background COC knowledge to make it work. Not to say your own players are not smart but if they don't have a lot of experience making the scenario too complex could cause people to lose interest. I ran it in Gumshoe and it worked since I also think Gumshoe is a easy system to pick up.

Here is a link to the Gumshoe conversion - http://www.pelgranepress.com/trail/files/conversions/The_Lonely_Point_Lighthouse_Golden_Goblin_Press_ToC_conversion.pdf

I actually also think the Caleb's Bryson Springs scenario our of No Security would work for new players but if you do that you should make them all from the same group as opposed to making the all unconnected folks. I think the scenario works better if everyone is unconnected and are thrown together because it is more true to the core of all of those scenarios but with new players I think you need a bit more narrative glue to hold them together. As for system I think I ran using straight up COC rules but it could work well as Gumshoe as well.

RPGs / Glass Cannon podcast
« on: July 28, 2015, 07:35:16 PM »
I just started listening to the Glass Cannon podcast and am on episode 4. So far I am enjoying it. Excellent sound quality (I think everyone has their own mic) and the table talk is pretty good with some digression but mostly on point. There is some sexual humor that verges towards the juvenile and/or possibly offensive at times so your own mileage may vary depending on the callousness of your heart.

They are playing the Giantslayer adventure path from Paizo. I am not a pathfinder guy but most of the first part have been an investigation so not deep into the multi hour combat yet. I expect if it gets there I am going to bail so we shall see.

What will be the next animal the RPPR crew will punch? Will no one stop these monsters.

So this means we're probably going to have another march across the convention following the first part of the meet-up.

I hope the banner shows up and if it does someone takes pictures.

I am sure people have seen the news article about the "personal massagers" that someone has tied together and thrown up on to power lines (like you see with shoes) in Portland.

So of course there is a google map noting locations of said objects:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zU-X2rSB8Arw.kNB77SlKvJhM

Link is safe for work but depending on your own sensibilities you may or may not wish to view. I can neither confirm nor deny the accuracy of the map although since two are near my home I am thinking about venturing out to see that. Dildocaching as it were.

One of my first thought when I saw this was how can I work this into a game. Are these mapping ley lines (pun intended) or some symbol venerating Y'golonac perhaps.

but I'm sure you have other quality traits

Sadly that is my one good trait. It is really a boat load of jerky qualities with a thin veneer of generosity. :->

Given the fun affect it had on Lord of the Peaks it was well worth it. Hope you had a chance to enjoy the rum as well.

I do hope I can attend in 2016 and again play the role of the booze fairy godfather.

I believe (but would reconfirm once you are on the ground) that taxi's doing point to point travel in downtown area are pretty cheap. My memory was it might have been a flat fee of $5 until you got out of a certain range. I caught taxis well after 2AM with out problem.

In general the service people I talked to quite enjoyed having GenCon in town. Two different taxi drivers told me there was competition to drive during the convention because everyone was nice, no one was too drunk, and people were pretty good tippers.

This thread is killing me cause I will not be able to make it this year but hopefully will be able to go next year.

So when is RPPR going to be running Katanas & Trenchcoats ?

With the car wizard add on I am quite interested in living my live a quarter mile at a time.

So............dragon syphilis?

And Vorpal Gangrene. I remember those coming for Oregon Trail the RPG.

If you spend a point of Gentlemanly Pursuits you can avoid catching that.

Having been around for some of the Pagan Publishing run of the Unspeakable Oath I knew going in that I needed to be very unattached to schedule. I fully suspect delivery will occur at some point and the product will be very good otherwise I would not have backed but I try to have no expectations as to when.

I found Indianapolis to be an underrated food city. You need to get away from the convention core but I ate very well last year so I would recommend, if you can, set aside one meal away from the core. Of course it can be tough to justify a meal out when there are so many games to play and things in the dealer room to temp one and of course the trip it self is a constant hemorrhage of money but I do travel is about experience.

I had a very good bahn mi at Rook, a hipster joint about 2 miles from the convention center. Great beer selection and pretty inexpensive (well if you are use to paying real bahn mi prices it will seem expensive but a sandwich is like $8).

Oh man, I should have put more points in the "make awesome mixtapes" skill instead of "operate heavy machinery".
