Payday 2 with some of the guys from my tabletop gaming group. This is such an awesome game.

Who else has it? We could do a RPPR bank robbery.

Greys. As a kid I watched X-Files and the little grey men scared me so bad I'm still afraid of them. It was even worse when some years later as a teen I saw Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County.

I know they don't exist (or do they?) but they scare the fuck out of me.

Caleb got me to design an RPG.

I spoke to Ross some time ago during which I confessed the above. During our talk I casually mentioned that it would be cool if there would be a thread on the RPPR forums where victims students of the Caleb & Ross school of Gamedesign could share their stuff and discuss the posted episodes.

So here it is. I suggest we use this to keep one another informed and to help each-other through this not yet officially diagnosed life crisis like an AA hugging circle (we don't do coins).

To kick this off here's my confession :

Being of sound mind and spirit, I'm a philosophy graduate student designing a Pen and Paper Role Playing Game. This thing is keeping me going through the trials and tribulations of my dissertation. My game will be having custom mechanics underneath the hood. My game does not have a set theme yet. My game doesn't even have a name yet.

But it will exist, damn it. Like Dr. Frankenstein I shall stitch together a monstrosity that might survive the pitchfork-and-torch armed mob of the Gaming Industry Customer or the witch trial of the Gaming Industry Professional, emerging as a beautiful thing. Or it might die a sad, unplayable death as a failed experiment behind cell-door bars.

Let's see if we can fill our dungeons with half breeds and failed experiments.

I really like Pathfinder. I've been playing it and GMing it for the last year or so.

GMing is great if you run some of the Paizo stuff - the modules are easy to work through and players don't feel like they are getting railroaded like in other modules (we played some 4e D&D stuff and they were complaining about railroading).

Playing is cool as well - I'm currently playing a level 5 Fighter (3) / Cavalier (2) and I've got no qualms with the system.

The think I like the most is that, even though we all have the official print books, you can still quickly look up everything you need rules wise by going to http://www.d20pfsrd.com/.

All in all, I like Pathfinder.

Now, I've been thinking about running a Fallout Gurps game with my group (the last AP got me interested) but I'd like to try something new altogether. We already tried Paranoia (Success), and Eclipse Phase (Success). Anyone have any other games that are easy to pick up?

I got my hands on dead space 3 for the pc. To be entirely honest I must confess I only played part of 1 and didn't play 2 at all. But right now this thing feels terribly like Eclipse Phase - loving it so far.

EDIT: This game is scary. Seriously scary.

I was hoping it would be good, since Alien Vs. Predator (1, and 2 VIDEO GAMES only) we're awesome.

Multiplayer mode with Alien Lifecycle was too fun. All the aliens spawn as face huggers and have to get the drop on someone. Then they pop out and have a small chance to become a queen.

Predators have awesome stealth and sniper weapons and the humans had smart guns for all the spray and pray.

I kinda wanna find my old copies now, so fun.

Predaliens are scary. Cause one of my first ever Oh SHIT moments in video games.

Walking down a hallway. Hear something in the ducts above me... Stop for a second. Keep Walking.

Keep checking behind me. Get about halfway down the hall and a Predalien drops in from the duct. I scream OH SHIT over and over again while backing up and unloading a pistol clip into it.

I ran out of ammo, went man mode and stabbed it once and it died.

So fun.
I totally agree! It was so awesome.

AvP 2 was also very enjoyable - but this new game is terrible beyond worlds. Besides sloppy animations, UT era textures and idiotic AI it just felt like I was playing a $5 bargain breaker game. Far Cry 3 and even the new Black Ops are light-years ahead of this game. I have no idea why management decided that this game was fit for release (actually I do, it's just trying to break even).

Awesome write up! Sorry to hear you couldn't entice them to do a regular campaign.

I tried my first game with my buddies yesterday - normally we play pathfinder but they got fed up with me telling them to try something new. Let me guarantee everyone that it was a huge success!

A couple of weeks ago I posted a question on pre-gens but I was surprised when all of my players decided to make their own chars. Out of six players I had three who used a pre-gen to base their char on and three who made new ones.  Instead of playing Glory I decided to play Singularity, as it could be played without having Firewall in the picture and I guessed it would play on my players "Dead Space 3" vibe.

We've started off yesterday and after 3 hours I had to call the game on a cliffhanger, we'll play again in 2 weeks (we have a system where we play every Tuesday but change GM's, so I GM every other week) and I'll have time to write up a full AAR then.

Ross I know you were looking forward to the new Aliens game and I don't know how much you follow reviews but this one doesn't bode well for the game. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/12/aliens-colonial-marines-360ps3-review
Yeah Ross, I've got to disappoint you. I don't know if you've already played it (see how I went through a temporal shift there?) but it didn't really tickle my fancy.

It's sad to see how they manage to do something stupid with these IPs. I mean, you would say they'd have learnt by now?!

Still, if you want to play multiplayer or co-op I'll be your man. It's not as bad if played co-op.

I'm going to jump my group into Eclipse Phase by surprising them with a game during our next session. Plan is to have them not prepare anything for the next session of Pathfinder (I usually have them write something up) and then when they all settle down around the table hand them their eclipse phase character sheets and start the game.

After reading a couple of ready made adventures I've decided to start with the Continuity adventure. I've tweaked the beginning a bit to get them to practice the mechanics, kind of like a tutorial. Remember the beginning of the original Halo where the deckhand has you look up, look down, etc? Well, the Dr. Bot at the beginning has them go through some menial tasks (flex their arms, look around - that kind of stuff. I guessed that after re-sleeving the first thing a medical specialist or re-sleeving specialist would do is check to make sure you actually sleeved okay ) to have them roll a few times to get used to the system before hopping right into the game.

It's a group of 6 so I need to make quite a few sheets. Are the pre-generated characters in the core rulebook okay to use? Should I tweak them somewhat or should I just make them completely new ones?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey guys, decided to finally make an account to join in on the fan bus. I've been following RPPR's actual plays for about a year now and I've got to say: it got me back on track with a couple of 'other' systems that are out in the PnP world.

I don't live in the US, as I currently live in the Netherlands, so it's harder to find a group to play with, but I've managed to get together a group of 7 people with which we play Pathfinder once a week (every other week I DM the Rise of the Runelords adventure path). We're a motley crew of computer science and philosophy graduate students so we manage to somehow combine the extremes of geekery (I fit in with the last group).

RPPR's Actual Play of Eclipse Phase is up till now my favourite - Know Evil is an amazing campaign and it's so far inspired me to get the Eclipse Phase rulebook and I'm setting up a surprise one-shot for our next session (I'm thinking about starting off with the adventure called Continuity to set the atmosphere and get the players known with Eclipse Phase's flavour). I'm starting with Heroes of New Arcadia once I'm done with my current stack of papers-to-write.

I've joined the RPPR fan steamgroup, so if you want to chat or play terrible games I'm your man; just look for CommissarKip in the member list.

So yes, hello there.
