General Chaos / Colossal Failures Actual Play Podcast
« on: June 20, 2016, 10:59:02 PM »
Hey all,

Just wanted to put up a quick plug for a new podcast I am recording in conjunction with my FLGS.  I used to record quite a bit for the RPPR Community AP site, but life got in the way for awhile.  Like it does.

Anyway, I'm just recording quick APs of one-shot demos of various games that my FLGS has in stock or will order to take advantage of the Bits and Mortar program.  They will be short APs, typically only two hours or so.

And, as the title suggests, mistakes will be made.

Episode 1 is a one-shot of The 13th Age, in which I manage to incorporate a piece of Red Markets (including a name drop!) towards the end.  Really.

Enjoy!

PS - Ross, I do plan on running Base Raiders soon, possibly next week (as one demo of the Fate system).  Have you thought about creating a demo packet to be run as an intro/hook to the game?  I've run it before, obviously, but you would be better at designing characters/designing scenes to highlight the strengths of the game.

RPGs / Your most RIDONKULOUS character evah
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:59:38 PM »
Why is role-playing fun?  The stupid ass characters we come up with and the dumb shit we have them do.

Everyone has a character they made that was simply ridiculous.  Here is my favorite:

Inspired by a spam bot name I seem to receive every Tuesday, Juicy Tracksuit was a ghetto fabulous personal trainer trying to make it big by being all "retro n stuff" and producing VHS tapes of his workout routine.  I played Juicy in CoC (who was much too fabulous for any one gender to contain), in which he emerged from his tenement housing with his box of tapes to sell at the flea market and got jiggy on a firetruck with a fire demony thing, punched a little girl in the face which ended up killing her, and dove headfirst into a glass window. . . and bounced off due to a critical failure.  He was then eaten by fire hounds.  The end.

RIP Juicy.

SHARE THEM.  SHARE YOUR STUPID CHARACTERS.

General Chaos / whats the WORST mythos story??/
« on: September 05, 2014, 09:25:49 PM »
We've all read HPL, Howard, Bloch, Smith, etc..  They've produced some fantastic stories that shaped generations of writers.

But oh boy, did they produce some absolute shit as well.  And I'm not even referring to the often-discussed racism (OH HAI NIGGER-MAN THE CAT).  I'm talking about some awful prose, insane ramblings, nonsensical characters (when there even ARE actual characters), and so on.

But if you are like me, you still enjoy reading these pieces of shit!

SO, what is your FAVORITE mythos story that is DOG SHIT?

Mine HAS to be Old Bugs by HPL.  Dear god, what a travesty.  It is a frame story, so we are treated to TWO awful stories telling us about the dangers of alcohol.  You know what, HPL?  FUCK YOUR TEETOTALISM.  This is basically the HPL version of an after-school special.  And because it is SO BAD, I just have to love it.  Nothing beats a drunk shouting his last words in LATIN before dying for. . . reasons.

RPGs / D&D Encounters
« on: August 20, 2014, 10:57:18 PM »
Is anyone participating in D&D Encounters at their FLGS?  I think they are a lot of fun, and they are nice, short bits of gaming that fit into my merciless schedule.

Here is my character.   Share yours!

Curio the Curiosity Collector.  He is a bard that plays the spoons and is obsessed with keeping his curio cabinet well-stocked.  He wields a rapier named "Trinket."  8)

General Chaos / Amazon Reviews by Chris Matthews

Amazon reviews are typically amazing.  This man, Chris Matthews, is turning them into their own literary genre:

My favorite:
Quote
For my sixteenth birthday my parents threw me a birthday party at the laundry mat that my mom operated. It was a family run business from my mon's side that extended several generations back from the time they came to America from Asia. We used the laundry mat to host many events due to the spacious area and ample tables provided to seperate and fold their clothes on.
Knowing that I was a fan of the Batman cartoons, movies and comic books, it seemed an obvious theme for a birthday party. Val Kilmer being my favorite Batman ever (curse you Bale!!)
As the story goes, my dad, being a fit 5'4" Japanese man raised in Hawaii, wanted to rent a Val Kilmer costume from the movie "Batman Forever" at the party store, but they did not have one in his size. Even if he did not wear the boots and some black sandals, the suit was just too big. Most likely, it was intended for one of those disgustingly over-weight comic con attendees trying to be cool.
What did end up becoming available that fit my father was the Adam West Batman costume. In light of being nostalgic, that seems to be the one Batman that makes everyone smile. My father knew that would definitely be one of the highlights of the birthday party.
Through the course of events as birthday parties go, while my mother was bringing out the candle-lit soy birthday cake the intent was that my father, dressed as Batman, would jump out of a stand up coin-operated dryer and "suprise" me and everyone else.
Sadly, as simple as it was to be, it did not play out that way.
The dryer that he and my mom planned sneaking into before the cake was brought out was in use and so he had to use another one. Mother, stepped away to check on the cake in the microwave and missed the dryer he had climber into. When the birthday song began, mother slowly brought out the cake and I was anticipating my "suprise" at any moment.
That "moment" never happened, so we sang the second verse to the birthday song.
Still, nothing happened.
What did happen was while the singing was going on, there was a heavyset hispanic woman wearing a headphone radio set to "tune out" what might of been her four screaming kids and two barking dogs running about. As she put the coins in the wrong loaded dryer and started it up, she was completely oblivious to the dire situation about to unfold. The doors automatically locked and remain so until the dryer has completed it's entire cycle. It was a government regulated safety feature.
No one heard my father screaming. It was too late by the time we found him and waited for the dryer to stop.
We had a service at the same laundry mat and burried him in the dryer at a nearby cemetary.
To this day, I still believe that the rubberized to appear armored costume that the wise Val Kilmer wore would of protected him. If anything, the heat from the dryer would of impervious due to it's fire resistant materials.
This is a great-looking figure from the pictures that I have seen, but it also brings back memories of my father that brings me a sense of solemn reverence.
Hence, the one-star rating.
Respect.

General Chaos / Favorite NON RPG Tabletop Games
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:54:08 PM »
We all love tabletop RPGs.  Sweet!  But what other games do we like to play on top of our tables when we are not role-playing?

Star Realms - A fun, furious little deckbuilder that is easy to play and teach.

Ticket to Ride - A perfect board game.

Betrayal at the House on the Hill - Unbalanced as FUCK, but I will be damned if it isn't ridiculously entertaining.

Eight - Minute Empire - Very fun, very fast.

Werewolf and it's variants - An entire game built on lying.  Yes plz.

Love Letter - See above, but with cards.  Sooooo good.

Telestrations - What begins as a plunger turns into a dick... If you are lucky.

So... what do you like to play?

General Chaos / April Fool's Day FUN
« on: April 01, 2014, 11:13:59 AM »
Let's see who among us is a bastard.

What did YOU do to mess with people today?

Tonight is the night I run a Base Raiders campaign at my FLGS.  I organize the sessions on Facebook to make sure as many people as possible are aware of the game.

To mess with the regular players, I updated the event and said I was getting burnt out on Base Raiders.  Tonight, we start a NEW campaign:

RiFTS: The Great Parade,  where the players will enter the land of Oz.  Rather than focus on combat, the game will centered around relationship building and making friends on the yellow brick road!  I even updated all the event photos to reflect the magical journey they are about to begin.

So far the responses have been... less than enthusiastic.  Mwuahahahahaha!

I will admit that I am an asshole.  What about YOU! ?

Recruitment Board / Looking to Start an ONLINE GROUP!
« on: March 24, 2014, 11:07:31 PM »
So, the combination of work + grad school + inconsistent players that smell too badly to let into my house = my gaming needs are not being met.

I've dabbled in Roll20 and Google Hangouts enough to know that the experience is quite fun, and I'm looking to get a fun group together for some gaming action!

I love running one-shots and mini-campaigns, and I enjoy trying out as many different systems as possible.  I also like groups that rotate GMs.

I am currently in Central Time Zone, and nights from maybe 7:30/8:00 to 10:00-11:00ish work best.

If you are interested, just post!  :D

RPGs / THE QUEUE: Whacha got in YOUR gaming pipeline
« on: March 23, 2014, 11:47:43 AM »
I am a terrible GM.  Rather than focus on the campaign I am currently running, I tend to focus on working on other games I MIGHT run in the future. . . which I most likely never will.

Let us use this thread to discuss what we want to run. . . and to encourage each other to make them games we WILL run.

Here is my queue after we finish our current Base Raiders campaign:

1.  Hobomancer.  I don't think I need to justify this one.

2.  The Red Tower (hai Caleb!) using GUMSHOE or Fate.  I was torn between this and The Fall Without End, but I just love the wickedness of Red Tower.

3.  Dungeon World/Saga of the Icelanders - I think my plan is to demo the AW engine at my FLGS on Tabletop Day.  I think Saga is better suited overall for one-shots, but Jason Morningstar did right a simple DW scenario that is a great introduction for the system.

4.  The Esoterrorists -  GUMSHOE is fun.  I think I want to run the adventure "Six Packed."

5.  Narrative Game System - Backed it on Kickstarter, definitely want to give it a few spins.

And now what I WANT to run but most likely never will:

1.  Duck Tales - Either using FATE or Call of Cthulhu, this scenario will pit the the citizens of Duckburg against the Beagle Boys and Flintheart Glomgold.  The only way to stop them is to get Scrooge McDuck's Number One Dime. . .  but its corrupting power will challenge their psyche and force them to choose between saving Duckburg. . . or maintaining their sanity.  MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

General Chaos / What scares YOU
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:55:55 PM »
Since it is currently -18 degrees here, every time I go take the dogs outside I am reminded how much the cold sucks balls.  It also reminds me of how much I FEAR being lost and alone in the cold.

Seriously.  Imagine being in Siberia or Northern Canada or Greenland or wherever the gods send horrible people to die.  You are alone, in a vast wasteland of snow, and it is FUCKING COLD.

Your options: succumb to your fate, curl up into a ball, try to cry but you can't because your tears turn into ICE on your face, and proceed to die horribly.  Or you can try to escape, but the cold will slowly kill you anyway and you will go mad with delusion.   Survival?  lol no, you are fucked.

In short, nature is scary and evil, and cold, desolate wastes scare the everliving shit out of me.

And spiders.  Anything that can hide in my grapes and can kill me with one bite can go fuck itself to hell in a grease fire.

On that happy note, what scares YOU?

RPGs / Anyone heading to the Midwinter Gaming Con in MKE?
« on: November 05, 2013, 11:18:31 AM »
www.midwintergamingconvention.com

It is January 16-19 at the Hilton in downtown Milwaukee.  There are a number of CoC games being run, and some WoD so far.

The Hilton has a nice bar on the main level to belly-up at and enjoy watching the LARPers.

I will probably be there at least one day for some CoC action.   I just wanted to let everyone here know about the con in case they were within driving distance.

(Note:  I originally said the convention was at the Hyatt.  It is actually at the Hilton, which means no drunken glass elevator races  :'(   )

General Chaos / Whatcha' readin' for the Halloween Fun
« on: October 06, 2013, 09:44:37 AM »
'Tis the Halloween season, and that means it is time for festive readin'!

Here's what is filling my plate for the month:

Just finished this.  As scary as horror writers try to be, no one can top just how horribly fucked up real people are to each other.  And North Korea might take the cake.  This book is both horrifying and inspiring. . . mostly horrifying.

I am participating in The Big Read this year, and what a great book it is!  I don't care what people say about Poe now. . . I can read works like The Cask of Amontillado repeatedly and never get bored.  Plus The Tell Tale Heart is REALLY fucked up.  Try reading it from the beginning knowing that the narrator is completely insane the entire time. . . its awesome.

Also, try to get your local leaders to support The Big Read in your communities.  It creates great community events that help support local literacy and art groups.

Plus I got to attend a performance by a Poe impersonator last night, which resulted in a picture of me and Poe doing jazz hands.  Aww yeah.   8)

What can I say?  I got it at the local library for a quarter.  A group of werewolvles recruited by Abraham Lincoln to beat the Confederates into submission at Gettysburg go rogue and head west. . . for the sake of heading west.  Apparently their friends are out there or something. . . and only a Deputy Marshal, a ghoul hunter, a beautiful Mexican witch AND a necromancer can stop them! FUUUUUCKKKK YEAH!!!

Yeah, I can't wait to start this one.

SO WHAT SAY YOU!?  Any ghoulish delights you would like to recommend?
