RPGs / Re: Eclipse Phase

In defense of my previous post, it is the only way I could see it working.

I wouldn't personally do it, but if I were going to, its how I would.

All that said, I think that an individual who has displayed the  level of trade craft, versatility and skill could be a threat on the inside of firewall (Prometheans be damned), but it would require him having gotten in from the earliest days, having subverted Eye Rep at a fundamental level, and having built personal influence across the entire conspiracy. Certainly no easy task.

Is the idea of a threat attacking firewall in that matter completely beyond belief? Hell no, firewalls two greatest weaknesses are its belief that it has managed to make a structure that can't reasonable be compromised, and B, the belief in the 'infallibility' of the Prometheans, by those few that know of them.   But Manjappa doing it? Nah, that is just strains credibility to much. You get to pull of one impossible superspy routine, and then your done ;)

Eclipse phase being transhumanist horror and conspiracy:

If I where going to have Manjappa return, it would be as alpha fork who has been embedded within firewall from its earliest origins, as a fall back plan in case things went pear shaped. A small number of proxies are aware of his true identity, but consider this alpha to be to useful a tool to get rid of, and so he is protected by the organisation itself, which he is slowly taking over from the inside.

Wraith is more than a game for me. It is a work of art.

Everything from the setting to the rules, come together in a perfect storm. It captures everything I like about the world of darkness and yet doesn't descend into the "I hit it with potence" bullshit of vampire, the "i've read this section of rules three times to day, and I am pretty sure they are changing between readings" of mage.

Sentinel Hill Press, are seeking funding for the release of Arkham Gazette issue 3. The Arkham Gazette is a really useful Lovecraft country resource, full of esoteria about New England and cool Mythos gaming material. The first issue has my Adventure "The Bosworth House" in it and you can get the revised version of it as part of the kickstarter.

I just recently finished Hannu Rajaniemi's Jean le Flambeur trilogy, which is seriously good reading.

I am listening to Snow Crash by Neal Stephenso, and reading "The Rapture of the Nerds" by Cory Doctorow and Charles Stross. Whole bunch of Hastur mythos related reading is up next.

RPGs / Re: RPGs about religion
« on: November 20, 2014, 07:00:35 PM »
The thing is, most RPGs ignore 'common' subject grounds for most of humanity. Notice that there aren't any business-focused RPGs, despite the importance of commerce? (Red Markets isn't out yet)

RPGs are overwhelmingly themed around speculative fiction subgenres and tropes and those revolve stories about atypical experiences - war, conflict, mystery, quests, etc.  They're also meant to be fun and exciting. How do you make a game about religion fun and exciting? Most game designers would rather grab the low hanging fruit of epic quests or investigating the supernatural than try to puzzle out how to make a religious fasting ritual or pilgrimage fun in a game. I'm not saying that speculative fiction ignores religion, but games are designed to be played and that requires the interest of the players. It's very hard to make business fun, which is why it has been ignored. Religion, is not perceived to be fun or exciting by most gamers. I think that's why it's been treated like it has been in games.

I kind of think their is design space for a game on the subject. I think I have a cool setting to explore it into.

Thew core dynamic goes something like.

1. Call on gods to help in settling vendetta. Go to step 2.
2. Gods expectations of worshiper become greater. Go to step 3.
3. Worshiper does something unpleasant or scandalous to appease gods. Go to step 4.
4. Worshiper incurs vendetta as a result of his actions. Go to step 1.

With the whole game telling stories of scandal, assassination, dueling and worship, in a polytheist version of renaissance Venice.

Trinite: I gotta say, given my memory of Greek mythology, the last thing you want as a person in mythic Greece is Zeus turning up. It all gets a little ...well you know woman being "seduced" by swans and stuff.
