This has been around for a while but the Zombie Safe House competition has a few non-whimsical entries that might have application [ https://zombiesafehouse.wordpress.com ]

I was also thinking about what would happen to those massive server farms ... they would require far too much power to maintain but perhaps a priesthood would emerge, superstitiously cycling on and off machines in sequence in deference to the might "Brin", "the mass is over, google in peace, amen".

Google server farms would be valuable having essentially cached so much valuable information ... which could be of use to enclaves ... as well as perhaps indicating "last known locations" of people prior to the breakdown of society.

I just started listening to the Dead Authors Podcast on the recommendation of a friend, and holy shit is it wonderful. The premise is that Paul F. Tompkins, in the guise of H. G. Wells, snatches dead authors from history, who are played by other comedians, and interviews them before a live audience. The episode where John Hodgman played Ayn Rand had me literally cackling, and they even did one with E. Gary Gygax.

Yessss ... the L. Ron Hubbard one was hilarious. I came to Dead Authors via the Thrilling Adventure Hour http://thrillingadventurehour.com which you are probably already aware of ... but if not then you are in for a treat.

This is a very old one but I still love the Gobbler [ http://www.lileks.com/institute/motel/index.html ] ... the most elaborately empurpled hotel and supper club ever.

The architects website [ http://www.helmutajango.com/portfolio.html ] boasts a worryingly pyramidal police department. In fact their portfolio also includes some work in Cairo ... mythos connections abound.

Power stations are going to be hot spots of activity ... Particularly renewable sources like hydro could form the nucleus of a haven or enclave (missions to other plants for parts etc). Nuclear stations might be a bit of a mixed blessing.

Not so freaky but interesting (and with a twist could be made freaky) are the ideal factory towns made by various chocolate manufacturers to maintain their workforce (usually inspired by the factory owners religious convictions) ... read a little intro at http://www.ediblegeography.com/the-towns-that-chocolate-built/

... you could look into the New Towns Act, under which brand new settlements were built in post-war UK (Milton Keynes etc) ... Livingston in Scotland was (I seem to recall) initially filled with people from slums in Glasgow and Edinburgh (a potentially explosive combination). See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_towns_in_the_United_Kingdom for some info.
