General Chaos / Re: What are you reading?
« on: March 01, 2017, 06:14:06 AM »
Just finished Big Machine last night. Have mixed feelings about it. Some parts I was completely sucked in by, others I appreciated on a more distant level, but the core plot was somewhat...thin, I guess? And a lot of build-up for not too much, and a vague ending. The semi-autobiographical nature shows, because the parts inspired by real life are much more powerful, while the the rest feel less thought through. Overall, worth a read, but not going in my favorites.

Anyone got an interesting recent urban fantasy/horror recommendation?

I feel the need to speak up for IQ. While it is not as the name would suggest a metric to measure a person's intelligence, nebulous and hard to pin down a concept that is. it is still a useful metric, especially when appraising developmental state and by extension disorders of it. It gives a rough idea of useful everyday abilities like pattern recognition, mathematical sense, spatial reasoning etc. as well as more subjective elements like vocabulary. This necessarily also means IQ tests need to be age and culture specific and also carefully investigated, because each test and each edition of those tests needs to be examined and experimented with to see how well they work. Not all IQ tests are equally well made or useful and it's always a good idea to be suspicious of any claims based on their results, but they have their uses.

More on topic, just picking up Hanging Tree as well. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

Hiya!

1) 4-5 hours usually
2) Yes, that's mostly been our schedule with a few outliers on Sunday. Reason being, one of the players works nights EU time on weekdays, and another works service industry and it's otherwise pretty hard to schedule. I'm honestly not sure how his schedule changed nowadays, to be exact, so if you're interested I can ask people and get back to you.
3) Bring your own at the moment, but pregens or even a chargen request from me are perfectly valid as well. Pretty flexible about that kind of thing.

That's up to discussion. I imagine some of the team might have had a clean-up job before where they saw some horrible things or a lesser encounter that got them on DG's call list.

I tend to prefer a bit of a mix as far as the behavior of the organization goes. New DG with some of the behavior of the old one, simply because it's what I know.

By clean-up I primarily mean a forensic scrubbing down of the affected area, disposal etc., not cover-up, though that might be something you'll have to dabble in, depending on how and how well you do your job.

Don't have anything concrete but I might as well throw my two cents in.

For Cthuga the first thought I had was bombs. Not just any old bombs, but thermobaric weapons. The biggest non-nuke fireballs man has managed so far. In use since the Vietnam War, including possibly Syria today. They're also a lot easier to get your hands on than nukes. Could be the trigger for an investigation and the plot device of a big finale, a giant conflagration as the climax of a ritual.

As for Ithaqua, the obvious path is to lean on the hunger aspect. Cannibal cults are still usable if you focus on a specific aspect, but you could also head for a more circumstance based approach. A humanitarian catastrophe, like the aftermath of Katrina, people left isolated, dwindling supplies, so cold and hungry that they reach out and invite in the essence of Ithaqua to survive. Once the emergency is over, these people still carry the arctic cold in their bellies, ravenous, in agony that only the warmth of living flesh and blood can beat back for a while.

No lore knowledge necessary, I tend to run Mythos adjacent DG and CoC games. Anything canon-ish is at most an easter egg or reference. A bit of understanding of how the game mechanics work is useful but also not the most important. It's pretty simple, and if you've listened to any of the CoC or DG APs you should have a basic idea of how rolling works.

Hello all! Hopefully this is in the right place, been a while since I used the forums. I'm looking for one to two players for an online one-shot of Delta Green for Halloween. My group lost a member to god knows what (complete communication blackout), so we're down to four total, and one is busy the weekend of 29-30. I figured the crowd here was a touch higher level than lfg threads on /tg/ or reddit and was worth a shot first.

We play over Discord and Roll20, usually starting around 4-5 PM EST on Saturdays and the occasional Sunday when the scheduling gods have abandoned us.
It'd be as said before the 29th or 30th of October, depending on what we agree on.
The game itself is a one-shot where DG friendlies are called in to help clean up after an OP, the PCs being the aforementioned friendlies.
Another thing to mention is that after that and once we manage to wrap up our ongoing Red Markets game (estimated mid-november), we're planning to launch into a Better Angels campaign, to be ran by another member of the group. So ideally, if the game goes well and we like you and you like us and you're interested in BA, you'd stick around.

Any questions or potential interest can be here or over PM.

It's been a good while since I messed around with WT, but I can give it a shot.

Looks to me like it'd work fine on any number of people due to it being Permanent, but it can only give commands to on one person at a time. So the Worm couldn't screech 'KILL THE INTERLOPERS' at a group of thralls and command all of them. Same for the telepathic link. Also, this is just my take, but making the injection a separate power could be important, since I imagine injecting a literal Man of Steel with a worm could be tricky, and as is no amount of armor would protect against it. Also, as is, the worm can control robots, sentient light beings, etc., so you may want to give it a flaw so it only works on organics.

Pretty sure the A-a-ron thing is from the Key & Peele sketch Substitute Teacher. Staring off into the middle distance...sounds more like a general thing than a specific reference to me. Meaning brooding OR PTSD.

Another one based on parasites just occurred to me. An Apple of Knowledge hack that makes the non-fit infected more attracted to and interested in people with high intelligence and status, while making those infected obsessed with Titans and wanting to go to active Titan sites/quarantine zones and have their behavior and risk evaluation shifted. So you have mostly asymptomatic carriers and the targets, the people with high mental abilities and in positions of power basically offer themselves up on a platter for forced uploading.

Doesn't even necessarily need to be drugs. One of my favorite 'oh god why does this exist it's so horribly beautiful' topics is behavior altering parasites. A nanoswarm can just directly alter brain chemistry and structure to compel the infected host to spread the infection while offing themselves, classic examples being toxoplasma, ophiocordyceps and euhaplorchis californiensis (the one that causes fish to swim close to the surface and spasm and wriggle which drastically increases chances of being eaten by the bird species that serves as the first stage of it's reproductive cycle).

You could make it something as simple as suicidal ideation, or a more complex lifecycle, like increasing sociability, sex drive and desire to be in groups while destroying self-confidence and weakening natural resistance to depression and suicidal thoughts. The host spreads the infection via desperate struggle for approval, affection and companionship, while having no hope of any success alleviating it's problems or resulting in drive reduction, so they just go further and further until they end up dead after a while.
