Oh yeah, I thought it'd be an awesome to throw a little horror in the game.  For the AI controlled gang I was definately going for a zombie / super soldier feel, like the zombies from the newest night of the living dead, fast, mean, deadly, especially when employed in numbers.  Give them all assorted weaponry and have a computer cooridnating tactics, and well, it just gets nasty fast.

Different ranks could do different things. You can have a class of super ganger that has some inherent net jamming effect. Characters PANs and smartlinks start to glitch and then shutdown. Give them a real hopeless feeling before they are attacked.

In Shadowrun, always be prepared for brutal character deaths. Runners, are a renewable resource.
