Character Profile: Kent Cutshaw
« on: April 26, 2011, 08:14:18 PM »
Kent Cutshaw got drafted late in the Vietnam War but he served one full tour of duty from Jan 1974 to Jan 1975. As a grunt, he saw combat. It was horrific, terrifying but exhilarating all at the same time. Kent had come from a small town in Washington and had nothing to look forward at home, except a dull job of manual laborer so he didn't give a fuck one way or the other when he got drafted. He got over his fear and became a proficient soldier, only receiving a few minor injuries.

When he came home, Kent didn't expect a parade but he did want something more than a boring job in the logging industry or construction. A year of drinking and getting into fights at bar did him no goddamn good. Then he heard about an exciting opportunity from a new magazine called Soldier of Fortune in Rhodesia. Kent signed up and went to Africa.

Two years of bush warfare hardened him even more but convinced him that infantry was a fool's game. He made contacts with some shady quartermasters and became muscle for a small time arms smuggling outfit in 1978. He helped sell guns to his former enemies and anyone else who could pay his bosses. He rolled in cash for a brief time, having all the women, booze and drugs he could handle - a far better life for a no name punk from a hick town no one's ever heard of. It fell apart overnight in 1983 when a single bad deal bankrupted his employers and resulted in an ambush in a remote airfield in Angola. Kent and a few others shot their way out but it didn't matter. They were all broke and would probably get killed if they spent any more time in Africa. Having nowhere else to go, Kent went back home, with nothing but scars and nightmares as his pay.

Kent tried to go straight for the next few years. He worked at a variety of dead end blue collar jobs. He knew how to shoot, infiltrate enemy territory and spot an ambush but couldn't fix a car or hold down a steady job. In despair, he placed an ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine. "Highly trained operative looking for assignment. Veteran of Vietnam and Rhodesia." That was in late 1986. In early 1987, he got an response.

A man named Marty wanted a guard to protect his warehouse near Bourne, Oregon. Simple job for a steady paycheck. Kent gladly took it. When he showed up, he realized the 'warehouse' was really a whorehouse. Not a problem for Kent. But after a few months, he realized that the women were all from overseas. Few of them spoke English. None of them seemed to get paid or even leave. Kent was a killer but hated the idea of even hitting a woman, let alone human trafficking. Plus, his pragmatic side warned him that he was in America. Cops actually fucking enforced the laws here. If he got caught, it would be prison, for a long ass time. Hell, he wasn't even getting paid enough for this kind of risk. But if he left, Marty could make his life difficult. The fat little fuck had some connections with the mob.

One night, a woman fled from the building. Kent pretended not to notice. Marty didn't even notice for an hour and berated Kent for missing that shit. Kent coldly replied that he was hired to guard the building from unwanted people from coming in and that was it. Marty and his goons threatened to kill him if he didn't help find the woman and offered extra cash if he agreed. Kent agreed but did a half assed job about it so one of the goons found the woman. Kent simply watched, unseen, as the woman tricked the goon and stole his pistol from his belt, shot him and ran into the night. Marty and the others caught up after that. Enraged, Marty ordered Kent to bury the goon's body while the others kept up the search. Kent never found out if the woman got away or not.

After that, Marty used Kent as the goon's replacement. Kent was fucked either way. He had to do what the fat man said or he would get a price on his head. As an outsider to Marty's organization and not trusted, Kent was given the worst assignments - body disposal, sending messages to rival gangsters (who might be tempted to kill the messenger) and so on. Kent was clearly disgruntled, so he wasn't that surprised when the FBI showed up. The lead agent, John Harrington, also served in Vietnam so he won Kent over. Kent became an informant.  Bourne, Oregon was a small piece of shit town but Marty used it as a hub for all kinds of scams and crimes. Kent figured that as soon as they raided Marty, he could go into witness protection and have a decent life. Better than this at least.

Appearance: This basically. Kent has grown a beard to fit in with the locals more so people will assume he's a simple yokel.  He's not attached to the beard though and may shave it if he needs to change his appearance suddenly.
