I totally agree, this is a great film because of the kids, not the monster. I was totally into the monster story, but I was way more into the relationships between the guys as friends and budding love story between the lead boy and girl characters.

And yes, this was JJs love story to Steven Spielberg and is wealth of 80′s movies. I loved it on that level too.

Yeah, got the chance to see Super 8 a couple of days ago. Fantastic movie.
