I'm not sure and don't quote me on this but wasn't the primary use for most european swords (including the Claymore shown above) to crack bones with the force of the impact focused on the straight edge and was never really intended to actually cut.
On the other hand, Most swords over a certain length (approx. 36") originating from Asia were developed to slice.
It's probably due to how swords are portrayed in movies and popular culture that this idea of all swords are made to cut actually came across which is understandable because, lets face it, its not as cinematic or cool for a guy to break bones with a sword rather than making a vast array of decapitated quadruple amputees.
