also they are instinctively afraid of giant crabs, enemy crabs (massive damage)

I can stuff a rust monster into a bag of holding and sneak it on board. And then, Bam! (Just give it a little blast with the spice weasel!)

What if you transmute the apparatus? I mean, changing iron into bronze isn't even that high a spell level is it? Or plastic. Or bronze wood, if you feel like dipping in on Eberron. And why bother with a Rust Monster in the bag of holding? Fill a pill with those feather charms that turn into anchors. Or do both and fill the thing with rust anchors. Even if they have waterbreathing let's see then avoid tetanus then.

Have you used the 4E Rust Monsters out of the Monster Manual 2? I like them alot better. They don't destory equipment but instead convert it into the basic magical material of the game: residuum.

In the one shot I can for D&D Game Day there are some Rust Monsters. One of the players wanted to feed his equipment to it, have the others kill it, then use the residuum they harvested to make new equipment tailor suited for the dungeon. Didn't work since the pregens didn't come with rituals, but a decent idea.

they are part and parcel of the old school "DM vs Player" adversarial playstyle that is terrible and dumb. They are products of metagaming on the part of the GM and add nothing interesting or unique to the game. In earlier editions they ruined PCs and in 4E they are speed bumps by themselves and TPK machines when added to other encounters.
