Recruit friends.  Out of my current group, only one (of about 7) had played before (I think).  But yeah, find your friends that are into fantasy, video games and the like and see if they want to try a game or something.  Run a few one-shots, or a simple campaign and see how they like it.

Or, consider checking around (if you are at a high school or university or something) for a club or the like that has RPG gaming...

Sometimes you can find people on facebook.

:P

This one time my group and i were gaming at our FLGS and some random kid was like "hey can I play" and we said sure.
Sometimes the stores have bulletin boards and the like.

But the thing about strangers is that they are strange, so tread lightly.
I wish I was Tom.

Granted, you are now Tom.

I found my current group on meetup.com.  We have at least monthly D&D meetups here in Atlanta.  And the meetup message board is a great place to advertise for a game.  It is helpful because it is targeted locally.

You have to whore yourself. Consider: how does a man find hookers? By looking in the right area for people wearing the right outfits.

Wear D&D clothes, carry a D&D book with you, 'accidently' drops some dice around people. That's how I found people in my old group. That group eventually flew apart, I still got a few months of gaming out of it.

Come to think of it one of the guys I went to high school with used to do the same thing, he wore his shirt with different die types that said "Choose your weapon" I knew him from school but didnt know he was a gamer so I walked up to him at Blockbuster(I used to work there) and pointed at the d8 and said Longsword....he pointed at the d12 and said Greataxe.... we have gamed together ever since.

I have done the following
1. Found one at my local game shop (all fun and games)
2.Do online groups via skype
3. Ask you nerd freinds
4. Get you jock freinds drunk and whip out the books (This worked for me)
5. Get your fag hags to play

all 5 of these worked for me

4. Get you jock freinds junk and whip out the books (This worked for me)

It's amazing what you can get someone to do just by holding their junk.
GENERALA, my free dungeon-crawling RPG, is now available! And it's free!
