How can I find a new group?
« on: April 08, 2010, 10:23:06 PM »
Hello forum. I am just posting because I have been looking for a new RPG group. I haven't been able to play in a while seeing as my old group disbanded. I want to play a Star Wars Saga Edition game but will try anything. I have the books for Saga and Revised but not for any other games. How does one find a new group? By the way started to listen to the pod cast and love any help would be much appreciated.

Check your local gaming shop for any sort of bulletin board (online message board or old school peg board) and post there.  Another good choice might be meetup.com, depending on your location.  They have some groups devoted to RPGs.

Try Meetup.com for your area.  There is usually a DnD group which is a good place to post for other games.  And if you are lucky enough to get a generic RPG group you are golden.

Do you have a local gaming store? You may or may not be able to find a group at that store, but you should be able to find out about any local gaming clubs or conventions at the store. And you can almost certainly find a group at a club or con.

mark the screaming stones with the blood sigils of calling and harken to He Who Waits Between Moments three times within the space of a heartbeat. Then turn around and walk until you meet a stranger on the road. Demand to know the stranger's name and if he denies you three times then strike him down with warded soul-reaver for he is a fell-devourer and he will consume your essence if you turn your back to him. If the stranger does give you a name ask him what snacks are appropriate to bring for the first night for the time and place of gaming shall be engraved on your dream-tablet.

Cheetos and mountain dew are a good go-to snack if you don't speak nether-speech and thus can't understand the stranger.

Force your friends and brainwash your enemies...

(heh heh)

But more seriously, if you have some friends, ask them.  Chances are if you are into something and friends with people they would be interested in at least trying (if possible try to gauge what system would interest them)...

I also support the "meetup.com" approach. Even if you don't find one for your town, you'll likely find one for a nearby town. Talk to those folks and see who they know.

Ross' ritual is a good idea, but you won't be able to use that one until the temple on Venus is bathed in the light of Canopus. (which I think will be around August 5th?) Check your local library's "lost books" depository, or any creepy local bookstores where most men dare not tread. They might have a ritual that's suited for your region buried within a long forgotten tome, scrawled in the margins by a man whose mind has been stretched and torn by the force of the cosmos.

The librarian may also know of a gaming group. Cheapass gamers have been known to petition their librarian for DnD books.

Whore yourself. Carry your Star Wars Saga books around with you and use them like a hunter uses doe urine to attract bucks, which you then have to shot from your hiding place, or to make a more direct parrall to reality, ask to join a crew.

The only problem with this approach is that it's extremely unlikely a GM with a planned campaign will approach you. Mostly it will be players seeking a game who will actually engage you.

You can also attempt to convert people who aren't currently gamers so ask your normal friends if they want to give it a try.

Here's a good format for getting people who have never played a game to game with you.

Scene: You are talking to one of your friends about Star Wars. If you want, you can invite your friends over for a Star Wars movie night and then you'll have everyone you want to play with you, right there.

You: Man, Star Wars is so great.

Him: Totally. I love all the movies.

You: You know what would be great?

Him: What?

You: If we could make our own Star Wars stories.

Him: That would be pretty cool.

You: (explanation of the idea you have for your campaign)

Him: That does sound really cool.

You: It just so happens that we actually CAN do that with the Star Wars RPG. I have the book right here. Do you want to play?

Him: I dunno. It seems kinda hard.

You: It's no different than any other board game. Trust me, I know a lot about the rules and it will be fun.

Him: I'm still not -

You: I'll order pizza.

Him: . . . . okay.

The key to this is the pizza. No one can resist free pizza. I know Ross said Mountain Dew and Cheetos, but this is bigger and better. No one can get full on cheetos, pizza on the other hand, is like nerd gold.

Don't know if it's the scene you've set, or because it's you telling the story Cody, but I now have a porn soundtrack playing in my head. Apparently I think gaming is dirty.

All I can think of is "Come on Over to Mah Crib" from the Meatmen.  Every time his character starts talking to someone of a marginally female persuasion, that song plays as a theme in my mind.

My intentions were innocent, but even as I wrote it, I felt vaguely dirty.

Still, it works.

You: I'll order pizza.

Him: . . . . okay.

You: You put on this slave girl outfit.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I will try the pizza/slave girl option first and see how that goes...
