raillery redux - computer game video podcasting
« on: August 14, 2011, 05:15:10 PM »
So the reason I was looking into streaming video games recently was that I had an idea to bring Raillery back. The problem with it last time was the amount of time and effort it took to produce even one episode.  Now, I got FRAPS and I found out how easy it is to capture video game footage and then comment on it. As a test episode, I did this:

In the future I plan to focus on weird/unusual games like modded FPS servers. I've got a lot of footage of an insane Killing Floor server that can hold up to 35 players and has nuclear weapons enabled among other mods.

As someone who LP's frequently, I'm familiar with FRAPS (as well as Camtasia and Bandicam) and I can say that the only real issue with FRAPS is that it makes new files every time one hits 4 gigs in size (which depending on what you're recording could be anything from 2 minutes to 4), meaning that putting anything together with it can take a while, as you have to splice video together, and compress it, if you mean to upload it anywhere.

15 minute video, 29 gig file, good gravy.

It also doesn't work on some older games (Gabriel Knight series) or PSX-Fin, or even ZSNES, which is a shame.

yeah I've noticed that too. I'm compressing the videos after I make them then throwing them into final cut pro for editing. I'm still experimenting.

What do you use to compress? I use VirtualDub and MediaSubtitler, myself.

main challenge so far is finding a format that doesn't require extensive rendering in final cut pro. Compressed AVIs work but they require rendering to work and that just slows things down.

I think (though not for sure) that h.264 and plain mpeg4 work without needing to be converted (at least thats the case for Apple's other apps like Garageband and iMovie.)

Yeah, I watched it, twas interesting. I thought it was a good mix of informative and comedy. Made me want to check out Killing Floor, for sure, and it was an entertaining video throughout.

A+++, keep it up.
