RPGs / Re: Mini-Games within your Game
« on: July 17, 2011, 03:29:32 PM »
Back in the 3.5 era of D&D I was part of an all-Rogue game set (usually) in a pretty open-ended sandbox city. Frequently the GM would temp us away from the main plot by offering chances to 'grind' XP in the gladiatorial arena, GP by doing what rogues do, or to dedicate our time to the Thieves guild & train for a new bonus feat.

Meanwhile the main plot was still 'progressing' weither we were active or not - leading to some suddenly and surprising turns of events. Though it pissed us off at the time, I've come to appreciate the inherent choice of the party - personal glory vs duty to (story).

Amazing job guys - thanks for giving the rest of us a chance to share in your story.

To be honest, I used to say that Eberron 'was 4th edition' just as Greyhawk 'was 2nd' ... but with the New World AP's (and the increasingly amazing) PDFs, I feel that TNW has become the campaign that I 'dream in' when penning characters or adventures.

I'd like to make a toast to all of the RPPR players: 'Thank You for the memories, both future and past. Cheers!'

Looks like I'm going to go with the pre-gen weapon tech (male version).

"Deuce" standing by, chamber is loaded, and the safety is off.

6
I'd like to go with the Smuggler or the Weapon Specialist (whatever the team needs more).

Std. Pregen. Name is Davian 'Deuce' McCloskey

Whoops - w too many guns in this gunfight.

Rebooting.

I'd like to get in on this action if I can ... I usually gravitate towards the Smooth-Talkin' Face at the table - but given my limited pbp experience, I may just pull a 180 as a street samurai ... think JC Denton as specialist sniper and Silenced SMG virtuoso.

As for the character - I'd like to make my own, but I may just go with a pregen in the interest of time.

Actually yes - most of the time it's played - the 'theat' is defined as a shapeless mass or as a horde of mooks. Luckily the local 'Story Gamers' - a fairly experienced group - were able to come up with a Weird West horror of Brotherhood of the Wolf proportions.

Personal highlight: my doc tricked a professional gamber into playing Russian roulette rather than a 'fair' quick-draw contest. When the PG was unloading, he started shooting. Like the game's theme song says "ain't no rest for the wicked"

I would of loved to be a part of that action - but the next issue goes to press that night & and I'll be up to my neck all forms of PDF related hilarity.

Good luck gentlemen - and please, if you happen to fail your SAN rolls, nothing says love like an improperly dropped grenade.

RPGs / Alternative Uses for the Call of Cthulu game mechanics
« on: February 20, 2010, 01:22:25 PM »
Hey all - quick question here:

Has anyone out there experimented with using the right system, but for the "wrong" reasons? Perhaps you have an aversion to quickly produced marketing schlop, or you love the mechanics, but would prefer a different flavor of fluff.
(for the sake of argument - lets just forget about GURPS/FUDGE/WUSHU for 5 minutes.)

Examples:
1—Call of Cthulu used to simulate a Wild West era campaign (inspired by Deadlands) just without the elder horrors.
2—CoC used to simulate a WWII squad mission (think Saving Private Ryan or Inglorous Bastards) ... SAN is still used, but rather than cosmic horror - it's the mental strain of war.
3—Star Wars (d6 or d20) modded for Star Trek (Abrams-verse) or Serenity (Whedon-verse) purposes.

Thoughts?
