General Chaos / A Note from your Loving Moderators
« on: March 04, 2010, 09:33:27 AM »
Maze and I have become fed up with the flame wars and some of the other bullshit that has started to occur daily on the threads. And we're not talking about the jabs at one another that are all in good fun - like telling Cody it's OK if he still dresses like a girl or making fun of Ross' announcer voice - but the actual flame wars that have started to creep in. This is a first and final warning before we start flexing our mod powers.

RPGs / MOVED: Anecdote: Fluffy the Awakened Elephant Rogue Cohort

This topic has been moved to Role Playing Public Radio Podcast. I decided to put this in the forum where it initially belonged.

A few years ago during the Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign, the RPPR crew had finally made its way to Shanghai. As what always happened, the group immediately split up and did separate things. The crazy guy who started carrying dynamite with him went to the bar to drink. Tom went to study Aklo and stare at sanity blasting paintings. My character – Orlen Johnson – guarded the floor in the hotel we had rented out.

The rest of the party – Fuzzy Dan, Karee, and Jason included – decided they were going to go out and get information about something. What they wanted information on isn't important. The informant they found, on the other hand, is. The informant was a ghoul. And the ghoul only needed one thing to give up the goods:

Ross: (in his best ghoulish voice) I would do it if you provide me something.

RPPR players: (enthusiastic) What? What? What?

Ross: (ghoulish) Long pig.

I immediately started laughing when Ross said this, but the other players, well.

RPPR players: Huh?

At this point, I scanned the other players and realized they really didn't know what long pig was and started laughing harder. Ross also started laughing. And the rest of the RPPR crew looked at us like we were crazy.

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / RPPR Fanfic Call for Submissions
« on: February 28, 2010, 04:12:00 PM »
All right all you RPPR listeners, especially all you Codyphiles, we're looking for fanfic submissions based on RPPR characters.

The rules are simple.

Choose your favorite RPPR character that someone has played in one of the actual plays, that has been discussed in the RPPR episodes, or that has been discussed on the forum boards and write a 500 word short story based on that character. Genre and setting are up to you.

Post all submissions to this thread.

Based on what we get, we might record a few of them.

General Chaos / Best of Hulu
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:34:57 PM »
So my wife and I scan through Hulu looking for TV shows that we didn't know about and find interesting. Tonight, we stumbled upon ReGenesis, which is a fascinating Canadian bioterrorism (at least so far) show that combines the 24-esque split screen approach with some really nice characterization.

Here's the Hulu link: http://www.hulu.com/regenesis

I figured I started a thread so we can post other good TV series that are available online for free that people might be watching and find interesting for gaming/writing.

So, Karee and I were watching Ghost Hunters and came up with an idea for a collaborative project on the RPPR forums. The basic scenario would go something like all the PCs are members of a ghost hunting TV show but the show is a big scam (you know like Ghost Hunters). When they go to the house to "investigate," shit gets real. I have two different ideas of how this game could be run:

1) Have the players come up with their own scams before the game and, then, turn their scams into actual haunting events.

2) Come up with a set of predetermined scams that the PCs must set up - so the GM is an executive producer of the show - and then come up with some predetermined actual haunting events. (With room for the PCs to come up with some of their own scams.)

I'm leaning toward 2, but I want to see what other people think.

General Chaos / Future MOCT Character
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:45:48 PM »
Karee has gotten on a crafts kick since finding out that she was pregnant back in November. Her latest craft project was creating a "monster pillow" that includes a zipper pocket with two smaller monsters in it. This will be our kid's first monster and, consequently, our kid's first MOCT character concept. I figure once the kid is old enough to toss dice, I'll get him/her/Deep Spawn (we'll find out next week) playing RPGs.

General Chaos / Crazy Writing Strategies
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:40:16 PM »
A number of my colleagues and I are engaged in planning / writing our dissertations. I'm in the planning and proposing stage currently, which has meant a lot of brainstorming session, a journal full of random notes, and lots of post-it notes spread throughout my apartment (much to the chagrin of Karee). Lately, though, I've taken to mapping the thing a la serial killer investigation style on my office wall. I'll post pictures as it develops into the non-Euclidean monster I know it will turn into as I draft, but here is the current one:

General Chaos / List of Recyclables Found on My Office Wall
« on: February 16, 2010, 05:05:36 PM »
So a few months ago, I was working on the computer in my office at UWM. While I had the computer desk pulled away from the wall a bit, I noticed something taped to the wall behind it. It was this list:

General Chaos / zombie panel
« on: February 11, 2010, 10:43:40 PM »
I uploaded an audio recording of a panel on zombies in pop culture that I chaired and Ross was on at the American Cultural Association / Popular Culture Association back in 2007 to the RPPR FTP.

Anyone know about this, I ran across it by accident: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/

The screenshots make it look interesting, but who knows what the interface is actually like.

General Chaos / Graphics Artist Needed
« on: January 31, 2010, 06:47:54 PM »
So my wife and I are having a child, which is pretty scary. But I intend on making it scarier. I have an "awesome" idea of doing a series of books for children based on classic works of literature such as Machiavelli's The Prince, Hobbes' Leviathan, Sun Tzu's The Art of War, etc. Now while I'm willing to adapt the texts and come up with graphic descriptions, I need someone to actually illustrate the thing. Who's in? Maze you up for this one?
