: Lessons Learned at RPPR
: Tadanori Oyama May 13, 2009, 07:13:38 PM
So, we all like the show, or we wouldn't be clogging the forums with our random advise/stories, am I right?

But what have we really learned from Ross, Tom, and the freakish Carebear Cousins who form the RPPR cast? Have we actually used anything they've tried to teach us?

I've been trying to run a League of Extraordinary Gentleman game for months with no luck getting players who'll get off their lazy asses and try.

Yeah thanks to RPPR i went and dropped the dough for the CoC core book. But strangely my players seem interested in horror gaming (who knew?). I'm going to test out some horror gaming "101 bullshit" and report back later.

I have invested hundreds of dollars in new RPG books because of Ross and Tom. I now own at least one book of the following system; Call of Cthulhu, GURPS, Mutants and Masterminds, Fear itself/Book of Unremitting Horror, Star Wars Saga, and D&D4E. also I've taken a few of his "actual plays" and used them as guidelines letting my players run through them. I've done the 1940 yakuza, fear itself(blood corpse one), and his league of extraordinary gentlemen.

that and I learned what "tummy sticks" is. kinda wish I hadn't, but now I can't unlearn it..... thanks Cody.

I ran my first successful horror game because of RPPR's Halloween episode.

I learned what "tummy sticks" is.

Yeah, me too.

I gotta learn to stop turning to Google when Cody says something I don't understand.
In this particular event, it could've been worse.  I didn't use image search.

pretty good, everything went almost exactly like the stray dog game, except there was no beheading in mine. that and they blew most of their money gambling.

I learned that Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition can be fun, number stations are creepy, and I also bought Call of Cthulhu.

1) Anal rape with a gun, though amusing to spring on your GM, is not always an effective way to protest how bad the game sucks.

2) Fuck Clowns. Fuck those guys.

3) All your awesomeness are belong to Martin Van Buren

4) The Book of Unremitting Horror was the best purchase I've ever bought in a long time. I would not have known about it if it wasn't for RPPR. Therefore, listen to their shoutouts (except The Burrowers, which I thought sucked ass.)

5)...er...Ross is apparently a teacher and Tom is a diabetic who delivers stuff. And Cody is married. Sorry ladies!(...and...erm...gay men...)

6) JOHN FREEMAN.

...That's all I can think of off the top of my head at so late an hour

Wait did you say that Tom is a God and he can deliver us?

...Actually, now that I come to think of it, we don't know too much about our hosts...
: Re: Lessons Learned at RPPR

as far as I can tell all we need to know about our host are Ross sounds kinda like Seth Mcfarlan, and tom likes guns.

And Reptiles.

I think in this case you'd have to call him a "scaly," right?

Are we talking attractive full grown man who has a gentle, caring touch? Cus, there's alot of levels to full grown man, you gotta divide that group up a little.

And that's not even taking into consideration the quality of style of the costume.

What about a full-grown man who wears a dress made of fish scales (which can be smelled from miles away.) glued to his hairy body? Would that rock your boat?

I know it rocks mine as much as Katrina rocks a kayak; not in a good way.

Before I started listening to RPPR I used to ruthlessly railroad my group. However, since hearing of the anecdotes- most of them seem to spring from unscripted moments and generally are hilarious.

I've been beefing up my improve skills quite a bit and lemme tell you, I'm scarring the shit out of my players now.

I really , really got into the theme of World War 1, and actually ended up learning a huge amount about the horrors of trench warfare.

From the sounds of it, hopefully ross will post his CoC game of the German U-boat. haha 2 part 12 hour of play time and lots of good stuff from scott glancy.

you guys are going to be blown away by the U-boat scenario - 12 hour play time and all of the players but Tom were published game writers/designers and we touched on everything from the design of merchant ships in that era (the inner walls were wood so they would catch on fire) to the culture of a Spanish held island. It was crazy.

You know, Ross, you could make some serious scratch for yourself if you ransom that AP. I would sure as hell pay to hear it

I think that the most important skill that RPPR has helped me to improve is to reflect my players:
              * Read them and make sure they are enjoying themselves.
              * Remain adaptable in my capacity as a GM
              * Prepare, Prepare, Prepare and not bitch about it as the players choose to do something completely different
Spending time after each game to talk with the players about what they want out of the coming sessions has greatly helped to keep the game interesting for everyone.
        So thanks, RPPR.

I know this is an old thread but I felt like I should revive it.

I learned more about gaming from RPPR than anywhere else, my characters are more interesting, I go out of my way to roleplay with NPC's because they are people too. I learned to use my role as GM to collaborate with my players rather than to tell them a story. I have used that lesson to try to make my friend a better GM but he still insists that we are playing "his" game. Alas, no wonder no one wants to play "his" games anymore and they are always asking me to run things.

Also after reading this thread, and speaking from experiance. I think Ross has sold more people on CoC than Chaosium could have if they spent thousands on marketing.

I'm one of these people. Running my first CoC game this weekend, and I can't frigging wait. Listening to these is amazing, I can't wait to apply what I've learned from Ross' games.
