You're tearing me apart!

Haven't seen the movie, so someone who has will have to give a heads up whether Brandon's take is any good.

eh - you need to see the original to get the full effect. No one can capture Mr. Wiseau's cro-magnon appearance, weird accent and mannerisms.

Of course I need to find others, doesn't seem I would be able to make it through alone...

I'm not supporting piracy.

But shit happens.

So does putting it on your netflix cue, recieving it in the mail and then "loosing" it.

Oh noes!  The empireonline.com vote is in and The Room came in at 10th worst movie ever.

How can it only be 10th?!
: Re: Everyone Betrays Me!: The Room Tribute Thread
: rayner23 January 30, 2010, 11:56:18 AM
Now that I have gone through the top 10, I must say that I'm not very impressed with this list. Allow me to state my reasons:

1) Spider-man 3 as at 50?! I mean, it wasn't a great film by any means, but one of the WORST films of all time? I think that is a little far.

2) Plan 9 is only at 16? If Plan 9 was never made, we would have no concept of bad movies! It deserves to be in the top 10 upon principle alone!!!

3) Batman and Robin at number 1?!?!?! Yeah . . . I totally agree.

So, I watched Batman and Robin after seeing the list, and I'm not sure how I feel.  On the one hand, yes it is a bad movie, but on the other hand, it's not terrible.  Which in someways makes it worse, because it's not really entertaining, so it's in this mediocre kind of bad place that makes it an absolute chore to watch.  Not to mention awkward as I realize that Mr. Freeze is my governor...
: Re: Everyone Betrays Me!: The Room Tribute Thread
: Charlie72 January 30, 2010, 09:05:27 PM

41.  Van Helsing

But I kinda liked Van Helsing. :'(
: Re: Everyone Betrays Me!: The Room Tribute Thread
: Mckma January 31, 2010, 01:35:51 AM
Finally saw it.  And I must say, between the awkward love making shots that were used several times, to the random characters that were never really introduced, to the random incomplete subplots, to the infamous two minute visits from Claudette, this movie was far and away much worse than I could possibly have imagined.  I am literally in somewhat of a state of shock thinking back on this movie and most of the vomit that was it's dialogue.  That said, I actually enjoyed it.  I suppose it was because of this tiny part of all of us that is masochistic, but something (possibly knowing of some key moments) kept me watching in anticipation.

There was one thing I wasn't sure about though.  I couldn't really tell what exactly the relationship between Johnny and Mark was.  If only that had mentioned it in every other scene, then I think I could have fully grasped it...
: Re: Everyone Betrays Me!: The Room Tribute Thread
: Maze January 31, 2010, 02:23:08 PM
I'll go ahead and say this list is flawed.

-

I think he was adopted or something. They always say that Johnny is like is dad.

: Mckma January 31, 2010, 02:32:08 PM
I think he was adopted or something. They always say that Johnny is like is dad.

I was making a joke, when watching the movie we found it absolutely hilarious that in literally every other scene someone would mention the fact that Johnny and Mark "were best friends," (i.e., "But he's my best friend!").  I was afraid it wasn't clear, and looks like it wasn't...

The other thing that I thought was really funny was how every scene had to end with someone leaving the setting (watch it again, I think almost all if not all end with one of the characters leaving the room or something else).
: Re: Everyone Betrays Me!: The Room Tribute Thread

: Re: Everyone Betrays Me!: The Room Tribute Thread

I read somewhere that Denny is thought to have autism. That would explain a lot.

The problem is that I don't think Wiseau knew that Denny had autism when he wrote the character . . .

Did Wiseau ever say in an interview why the movie is called "The Room"?

Is it because the most consistent thing in the film is the room where the director fucked a barely legal actress?

There was a showing of the movie where I live this past Saturday around midnight. I'd already seen it before, but seeing it with a bunch of other people who were "in on the joke" was a good cult movie experience. Some of the gags:

1. There was a "best friend" count. Every time Mark or Lisa mentioned Mark and Johnny being best friends, the count went up. Think it got to 8.
2. Half of the scenes where Mark showed up, a bunch of people called out "Sestosterone!" - because his actor's name is Greg Sestero.
3. Every time a picture of a spoon showed up in a scene, a barrage of plastic spoons were thrown at the screen by viewers.
4. Everyone joined in on the big quotes; "You're tearing me APART, Lisa!!", "Stop ganging up on me!", etc.
5. Making puke noises during the sex scenes.
: Re: Everyone Betrays Me!: The Room Tribute Thread
: rayner23 March 01, 2010, 04:56:18 PM
When I saw the movie, there was a group of guys who were singing all the lyrics during the sex scenes.

I watched The Room with my fiance last night (Rifftrax included) because she'd never seen it before, though I'd told her alot about it. I think it might have been the worst thing I've ever done to her in the course of our relationship so far. Pretty sure she's blanked the experience out of her mind so if I'm lucky she won't remember anything.

I don't think it scarred her that badly. She's a big movie fan and seeing a horrible movie was a little traumatic is all. She sat through the whole thing, except for sex scenes two, three, and five when she fled the area waving her arms, so it can't have been that painful.

Now, I re-watched podcast 30 of the new world campaign earlier today. There were a few references to a movie. I actually have not seen the movie myself. Anyways, the thing is I was bored.

So I jump onto newgrounds and look for some sort of game to play. I find this:

Now, imagine my surprise when I find the very same thing that everyone from NWC was talking about. Very coincidental.

I am amused.

Lol, I did a search on the site. External things not included, I guess since September 5th? XD! It's cool enough to have one, at the very least.

We were talking about this last night, myself and a few friends.  I had forgotten that the movie had cost $6,000,000, and what I want to know is: Where did all that money go?  It certainly wasn't to very talented actors (in fact it wasn't really much to actors at all since there really weren't that many roles), and they couldn't have spent that much on the sets...

Maybe the whole movie was an elaborate way for Tommy Wiseau to hide/squander/conceal his ill-gotten gains...

I'm thinking permits and licenses.

Movies are really expensive regardless.

I'm thinking permits and licenses.

Movies are really expensive regardless.

Yeah, but look at a film like Saw, which cost a little over a million as I recall.  Now, I'm not arguing whether that was a good or bad movie, but it was certainly a much "better" movie in terms of sets, "special effects," and acting.  I haven't seen Saw in a while and when I did it was on TV, but the two seemed pretty comparable on year made, length, number of sets, and number of actors, but there is a significant cost difference...

Granted I think that a million of the $6,000,000 was spent on marketing and potentially the premiere, but still, something like 1.5 million compared to even a generous 4?  I just find it kind of odd...

Random Note:
In my research, I found this on Wikipedia, people may already know this, but suddenly the birthday scene makes much more sense:

Kyle Vogt, who played Peter, quit the film halfway through the shoot. His lines in the last half of the film were given to Greg Ellery, whose character is never introduced, explained, or addressed by name. Ellery's character is listed in the credits as "Steven".

EDIT:
Strike pretty much everything I said.  Reading the full Wiki and actually thinking, I have chalked up the price merely to Tommy Wiseau's incompetence and potential lack of understanding of how much things should cost...

So I did some more reading just out of interest (everything you could ever need to know about The Room, especially for "new viewers" (http://blog.rifftrax.com/2009/06/12/oh-hi-rifftrax-a-guide-to-the-room/)), and frankly, Tommy Wiseau has gone from this funny, strange, quirky man to this creepy, completely unknown, alien, terrifying creature.  Like there is literally nothing known about him.  And there are all kinds of weird stories about him.  I mean I thought the guy was just quirky and odd, but no, he is downright creepy and strange.  Maybe I'm just xenophobic or something, but man, I would not want to run into him even on an open street in broad daylight...

I'm thinking permits and licenses.

Movies are really expensive regardless.

35mm film is expensive to shoot and process plus The Room did have a full professional crew of like 50-75 people or something like that.

: Patrick September 13, 2010, 02:07:14 AM
I believe I read somewhere that Tommy Wisneau shot the film in "Hi-Def" and "Standard-Def", which in itself isn't odd, but he purchased the actual cameras he used to shoot the film. Apparently, they (the cameras) are very, very expensive pieces of equipment. The article stated that most directors rent their cameras for a fixed period of time to cut down on costs.

I still find it hard to believe (especially in light of the generous use of "B" roll, even though Tommy is in some of the shots) that The Room cost six millions dollars to make. I think Tommy probably spent some dough on marketing and sent a little cash overseas to gather "interest"...

Yeah, like I said, the more I read, it seems that he just failed miserably.  I mean for a movie, 6 million isn't that much and is actually a pretty good budget, however he certainly way overpaid for the product he got.  According to the Wikipedia article (referencing an interview with either the guy who played Steven or Mark, I can't remember at the moment), he bought a "complete director's kit" along with a $30,000 digital camera and then used the 35mm camera he bought in the kit and the digital camera both to shoot the entire film.  He also had a huge crew that he shuffled in and out people from (I think I read there were 3 shake-ups of the offscreen crew).  It also apparently paid very well as the guy who played Steven said the checks were quite good and weekly.  The reason I guess the acting turned out so poorly is just that you can't do anything with what was written (some of the dialogue was rewritten on set because the previous lines were "unsayable"), and Wiseau was a very demanding director but couldn't explain what he wanted other than "do it this way," which I guess didn't come across that well...

So anyway, I can see him spending that much just because he didn't really know what he was doing and didn't know what it would turn out like (in which case he probably could have taken the millions he earned in jacket importing and invest it in something more successful)...

Heres the interview with the guy who played "Steven". - http://blog.rifftrax.com/2009/06/12/rifftrax-interview-with-the-rooms-greg-ellery/

It's also just plainly stated, Wiseau told him “Peter left.  Now you are like Peter, but you are Steven.”

For a Fallout savage worlds game I have mostly written up (with 0 realistic plans to run though), the Overseer is a man named Johnathan Wiseau, which due to a stroke part of his face is paralyzed and caused him to slur his words and suffer from Foreign Accent Syndrome.

His Best Friend(tm) is Marcus, the chief maintenance technician, although his job keeps him pretty busy so unfortunately the PCs wouldn't be able to interact much with him.

The overseer's assistant is Denny Hawk (actually no, its Hawks) and lost his parents to cancer when he was really young, and the overseer decided to adopt him as his own. (actually wait, it IS Hawk.)

The medical officer/counselor is named Peter, although he sometimes goes by Steven, and he's always a little paranoid that the nuclear reactor that powers the vault will explode.

The medical officer's nurse is a beautiful woman named Lisa, and shes currently in a relationship with the overseer. Her best friend is the children's teacher, Michelle.

And although the vault corridors are kinda cramped, they still take time off to bond by playing catch with an old football.

Not fantasy football, but a football simulation program. I have to find the CSV file with the names so that I can manually edit it so that all the names are characters from The Room. Then I'll have to play several seasons so that the only players drafted are named after characters from The Room. It'll be a giant pain in the ass, so I have not done it yet.

(Keep in mind I haven't seen it in forever so I"m doing the best with what I can) The characters are so unlikable to me. And most of the writing is bad, like they wrote a world where everyone openly has some sort of disorder, and they all think nothing of it (with Tommy's character I think I heard that he sort of does have one? But it's not really explained in the movie and so he just comes off as this 100% socially accepted guy that everyone loves, regardless of his what I think come off as obvious issues.) It also feels like the movie drags on for a long time. I'm sure that's what they might have been going for, with a movie entitled The Room, it's not too hard to guess they might being trying to go for a claustrophobic(I think that's the term I'm looking for) type feeling. Reminds me a lot of this story I read in english about this yellow room. Something to do with the girl going insane from being in it for a long time. But it isn't too relevant. But I just hate the feeling it gives off. I also feel like the plot changed a lot fast. Well I mean like the couple were perfectly fine and out of no where Lisa just does a 180 and goes batshit insane, causing Tommy to go batshit insane.

I guess I just can't seem to appreciate it as a bad movie as much as you guys can, I am unable to humor it, ultimately learning to love it for what it is. I just had a way different experience watching that movie.

The translation of this is:  He's the only one who managed to pass the San check associated with watching the film...

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate this movie.  just don't understand how you can all love it so much. I first saw it on Adult Swim when instead of my normal saturday night anime, they played this. Over, and over, and over again. Drove m crazy. But I kept it on thinking they would play my shows, but they did not.

To be honest, I hate the film. On the other hand, I love making fun of the film, so it grows on you like a mold or perhaps infects you like a militarized prion that slowly destroys your brain.

To be honest, I don't think I could ever hate or love this movie.  After 3 or 4 viewings, I still can't seem to wrap my mind around it or make sense (I was literally speechless following the first viewing).  That said, I absolutely love some of the dialogue and find it amusing that pretty much every line is quotable...

I think this deserves a mention (being a fan of The Room on Facebook often has its benefits):

Apparently it's screening at some film festival in Arizona on the 18th of November.  If anyone checks it out, I'd love to hear about it...

I literally spent a good 30 seconds unable to articulate why I had laughed and then cried to my boyfriend in the next room. I think I may have contracted a temporary insanity from sheer joy.
