Cawmic Borks
« on: May 26, 2010, 08:31:53 PM »
What was everyone's pull this week (and possibly why)?

Mine was: Kevin Smith's Green Hornet #4, The Web #9, Power Girl #12, Justice League Generation Lost #2, and The Brave and the Bold #34.  I also picked up volume 3 of Grant Morrison's run of Doom Patrol.

Now that I think about it, I'm not reading any Marvel titles.  I think I've shied away recently due to all the event stuff going on.  They feel a little impenetrable and it kind of intimidates me as a newly returned comic fan.

Cody will be glad to explain how I am a pretentious elitist because I don't read any mainstream DC or Marvel comics. I only got Marvel Zombies this week. I do read the following comix

Invincible
Fables
Jack of Fables
Marvel Zombies
Atomic Robo
Knights of The Dinner Table
Ex Machina
Powers
Hellboy/BRPD
Authority
Conan

I am consistently pleased with Invincible.  Of course, I am a whore for Robert Kirkman's writing.

How is Atomic Robo?  A friend of mine started picking it up and I'm curious to know your opinion on it.

Great dialogue and interesting ideas plus it's episodic so you don't have to follow it from issue 1. Pick up a trade and see how it works. I've talked to the writer Brian Clevinger a few times (he also wrote 8-bit theater) via IM. He's running a hunter the vigil game based on prototype over Google Wave.

@cody: how's Green Hornet Year One and Coffin working out for you?

@aaron: were you as sad as I was when DeMatteis disappeared from the writing credits? He and Giffen were like the dynamic duo of goofy shit back in the day.

Green Hornet Year One is much better than the Kevin Smith shit. I would also recommend the Kato series by Jai Nitz. It's really good.

Haven't read Coffin yet, but I plan on getting to it soon.

Superman: War of the Supermen
Dark Tower: Fall of Gilead HC

Why does war of the supermen just sound so corny?

Also, are the dark tower comixs any good?

If you like the books, then the comics are perfect.

Actually, I prefer the first mini series (Gunslinger Born) over the book IV of the Dark Tower (Wizards and Glass). Peter David does in 7 issues what it took Stephen King to do in 500 pages. Great stuff.

Not a big Kevin Smith fan?

Also, I was thinking about picking up Kato when I saw Ale Garza was attached, but then I found out he was just doing the covers.  Ninja Boy was like the first series I picked up (in... I want to say middle school, maybe?), so his art holds a special place in my heart.

Yeah, I love SK. But boy, sometimes he characterizes for far too long and gets a bit windy.

Not to get off topic but look at The Stand. It ramps up to the final battle good v. evil. Yada yada. It took about 2000 pages to get here and King ends it with
god and crazy pyromaniac doing everything. WTF?
Although I still loved the book anyways.

Kevin Smith's Green Arrow is great. His Batman is decent. His Green Hornet feels like a story we've seen a million times before. There isn't anything special to it at all. The art is excellent, but how is the story different than, say, Percy Jackson? Same formula (and yes, I am perfectly aware that it just follows Joseph Campbell's Monomyth like most stories do, but still . . . there is room for creativity).

Trust me, the interiors to Kato are still really good. Definitely worth buying.
