So I see on social media feed that there's an archival print of Jan Svankmajer's
Alice making the rounds. For those who haven't heard, this is the absolute best adaptation of
Alice in Wonderland:
It's wonderfully weird and creepy, from the taxidermied White Rabbit that literally tears itself out of a glass display case when it first appears, to the Caterpillar made from a sock, dentures & glass eyes to the various bone creatures that inhabit Wonderland. And unlike many adaptations of
Alice in Wonderland that look like an acid trip as described by someone who's never taken acid, I don't get the impression that Svankmajer is trying to make things weird, it's like it was just
there, and he's simply showing it to us.
