I want to have a PC kidnapped by a doppleganger, replaced, then rescued later. I dont know how to do this smoothly. Advice?

Game masters I've talked to have done similar things. They usually tell the kidnapped player and let them play the doppleganger.

Defnitely don't hurt the PC for something you are forcing them to do. Give them the same xp as everyone else.

XP is an abstract, like most other things in RPGs. I give players extra XP when they do things I ask in order to make the game more interesting.

If you don't let the player know he's now a doppelganger, he might feel cheated.

if you allow him to know that he is a doppelganer you allow him to be that monster so he can go around changing into ppl and stuff.
keep him out of the loop he will play as himself and not change the way he plays the game.

This happened recently in my gaming group.  The GM waited for a while to tell the player though so he would act fairly normally because his doppelganger was good at impersonating him.  It was all revealed during a battle when he started shooting us in the back.  We never suspected anything and it was quite a bit of fun for all involved.  We even thought that it was just something deflecting his spells because he is a player character and couldn't possibly be a traitor.
