Broke Out My Copy Of Hero Quest!
« on: June 06, 2010, 01:35:23 AM »
It was epic!

That game takes me way back to 1989, being 14 and playing with my best friend Jonah!

Tonight, me and my nerd-turned-responsible-father-yet-still-a-nerd-at-heart best friend played a game tonight.

He played two characters and two cannon-fodder types.

There was Al Deron; a brave dwarf man at arms.

And his guide, Gelf "The Elf" Ling. Gelf is Chinese and doesn't speak dwarf. Unfortunately, his common is heavily accented and nearly impossible to understand...

Al also took two brave dwarf scouts on the adventure with him. They managed to dispatch Fulgrim and Greg, ambiguously gay Orcs.

Sadly Scout #1 and Scout #2 were KIA...

I wish I would have got pictures of the game board. I was thinking how much Hero Quest and 4th Ed D&D had in common...

My only memory of that game was having our party desperately attempting to get into a door with a voice behind it because we were being chased by... something big. Ogres, maybe? 20 Skaven? Who knows!

All I remember is that after much frantic negotiation to no avail, all it takes is asking "please" to get us into safety. I think that was the only time we actually played that game.

Ok! I was thinking of Warhammer Quest, as Hero Quest actually looks like a game I'd like to play.

My memory could use an upgrade.

That video was hilarious.

Things were so much better when you were 14. My well-worn copy of Hero Quest is 21 years old!

The nice thing about Hero Quest was that you could do a little heavier role-play if you wanted to. I remember designing some custom campaigns and loving the simplicity of the Hero Quest system, but also incorporating a "harder" role-play element into the game.

Anyway, nostalgia is a strange and wonderful thing!

Hero Quest was my gateway drug. I was too young to play (in the beginning) but I was allowed to help my sister, Zargon, set up rooms and stuff. It is also how i got my HS friends hooked into rpgs. We started making mods for different character classes and then I was like "fuck it, I'll buy the 3.5 books and we can do this shit NOW."

Once in a while i break it out at family reunions. The gargoyle has been missing his head for like 10 years though.
I wish I was Tom.

Granted, you are now Tom.

Yes, the memories. I love Hero Quest, every time I play it, it reminds me of simpler and in a way, happier times...
