So, do ya'll read comics?
« on: January 14, 2011, 05:57:45 PM »
I'm sure the answer is 'yes', considering the population here and the previous comics thread from whenever it was. As I gave up Necromancy to instead take Transmutation I can't rezz that thread, so. . .

I'm a big fan of street-level heroes and anything noir-esque. Gritty, hardboiled stuff just gets me going. Marvel wise, there was Power Man and Iron Fist, Heroes for Hire, DC had The Question (pre Montoya), some of the earlier Hellblazer stuff was right up my alley. So I want to ask, since you all probably know way more 'bout comics than I do.

Anything you'd recommend?

I'd recommend Juan Díaz Canales' (writer) and Juanjo Guarnido's (artist),  Blacksad, which Dark Horse finally got around to publishing the first three volumes in English last year, in a *beautiful* hardcover book I got my hands on yesterday. Couldn't put it down. Art was stunning, particularly Guardnido's ability to convey emotion through expression. Reminds me a lot of Usagi Yojimbo.

Also read Brian Talbot's Grandville, which was pretty decent. Though all the steampunk stuff set my teeth on edge.

*EDIT

This is the only Supes comic on this list, it's not exactly traditional.
The Boys
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_%28comics%29

"The series is set in a contemporary world very much similar to the real one, with one notable exception: a number of people have some form of superpower. The series follows a superpowered CIA squad, known informally as "The Boys", whose job it is to keep watch on superheroes and, if necessary, intimidate or kill them."

Obviously, spoilers in the Wikipedia articles.

Preacher
Walking Dead
Y the last man
The Boys
Punisher MAX
Alan Moore's The Courtyard (Cthulhu Mythos)
Watchmen

Read the Watchmen. Hated it. (Blasphemy, I know).

Really enjoyed Punisher: MAX. 'Specially the Kingpin arc, which is probably the best treatment of said character I've seen.

Will check out The Boys and The Courtyard.

I don't know if you saw it before or after the film was released, but it screwed the expectations of a few people I know who went and read it after they saw the film. Either way, reading that is what made me a fan of Alan Moore.

Read it a year before the film was released. Had it really, really, really strongly hyped. It didn't really live up to the hype for me. I kept having people going 'oh man, it's so realistically written!' (which is silly, as the characters are a sociopathic prostitute's son, a mechanical genius leather fetishist, a murderous rapist sociopath who finally shows some concern for others before getting splattered like he deserves, a plot device, and a guy who is the best at everything ever) and so on.

I dunno, maybe I'm just overly sensitive to hype and subtext, but it kind of came off as really pretentious. Might just be my experiences with fans and what not, might be totally wrong, but it really didn't do anything for me.

Just remembered another one.

Wanted
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanted_%28comics%29

Absolutely nothing like the film, they butchered the fuck out of it. If you thought the movie was stupid, you may well like the comic.

I used to collect a few series. Now im broke and have lost touch with comics since my current hobby of RPG gaming is free, where as my old hobby of Heroclix had me in the comic shop constantly.

Buffy Season 8
Green Lantern - all associated titles.
Justice Society Somewhat recent reboot.
Anything Whedonverse that pops up.
42.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
If you can't fix it with duck tape you haven't used enough.
I intend to live forever -- so far, so good.

Surprised nobody recommended Fell. Great goddamn comic that one.  Too bad it seems dead in the water.

Ultimate Comics Avengers

is that the one thats currently having art by Dillon? Cause i had to stop reading that one, i didnt think the story was good to begin with, but coupled with his boring art i just couldn't take it.
