Gen-Con Monsters/True Dungeon
« on: August 19, 2011, 06:39:59 PM »
First of all I would like to thank Ross for running another great session of Monsters and Other Childish Things-Road Trip. This was my 2nd year playing Monsters and I have had a blast both games. After the game we chated a bit and once it was mentioned that I was playing True Dungeon later that day Ross asked me to post a review of it, and here we go.
This was my first experience with True Dungeon and had no idea what I was in for. It felt almost like an amusment park ride at first with the decor and all. Over all I found it to be a very cool experience, unique and different. The puzzles were very challenging, not at all like your standard D&D game where you can take all the time you need to figure them out. A party has 12 minutes to solve the room or it's 2 damage and onto the next room. The combat was equally challenging, having to play on a bar room size shuffleboard table and aim for the armor class printed on the board. Playing the Monk I had to throw two pucks with the second having to be in motion before the first stopped moving. I found that to be very difficult having no time to aim my shot. My only real complaint was having a party of 10 people, working out puzzles was almost impossible having to shout over nine others to get your voice heard. The decor, low lighting, and music made it feel like a real dungeon while the puzzles and combats were a challenge but not impossible. Overall I'd give it a 8 out of 10.
Thank you again Ross for running the game and signing my books.

Ah. I wondered what the actual game mechanics were. Interesting. Thanks!

See, My True Dungeon experience was also awesome.

First year doing it and the rest of our group (7 others) were veterans and helped supplement our equipment and give us advice on what to expect. We rocked every single combat and destroyed the boss in one round. Next year we plan on playing on Nightmare or doing the puzzle heavy run.

For the most part we rocked the puzzles out fairly easily, with one that stumped more than just us. (It was the "unfasten chains" puzzle right before the last room.) My friends and I had a blast and are totally going to be doing it again next year. We're recruiting more people but getting all one time slot is hard. I'd go so far as to give it a 9/10.
I wish I was Tom.

Granted, you are now Tom.

I think a party of 8 would have been a big difference for me. 10 is just to many to deal with at once. Not sure I'm in for around round next year but I did enjoy it, well worth the time.
The real highlight for me was getting to play Dragon Storm for the first time in 10 years or so and of course Monsters.
