Japanese War Game
« on: April 07, 2009, 08:03:08 PM »
Okay, so some of my more out there ideas haven't really taken root. How about this one:

Name-
The Warring States War Game.

System-
GURPS 4th Edition. 75 point characters.

Theme-
Wartime mentality among nobles and commoners.
The "realities" of war.
Single "heroes" being totally awesome within an army.

Goals-
Having fun.
Conquering land.
Gaining followers.
Ruling the world (Japan).

Style-
Play by Post. Hince the thread in the PbP section.

Play a noble. Or a singular foot soldier. Or a one in a million peasant. The goal is survival.

Could it be done in a simple-ass system? Please? I really don't want to be picking abilities from a book, nor do I have GURPS.

Alright, simple system is fine with me.

We'll use Wushu, which I enjoy. http://www.bayn.org/wushu/freebies.html

It's a simple system that encourages creative description and works well within the forum setting.

So, no character stat generation, all you have to do is give me the outline for your character.

For character background I suggest everyone pick a general role. You can be a ruler, a fighter, a peasant, whatever you want. Players are perfectly able to get into conflict with each other as well as GM controlled events so this game will likely become dynamic and, if we get enough people, more player driven.

Alright, make a character Dragonshaos, I'll work under you as a right hand or something.

Eep, let's see...I'm still reading how Wushu even works...

Just finished reading about it...I'd like for some kind of example character, like a peon, that I can use as a reference for my character.

Well... the system isn't really based on stats or anything, it's just a character background. But I'll give it a shot.

Hizuo, born a peasant, has served on the fields of Lord Hitoni his entire life, proud to work the soil under the Six Coin Banner of his lord. When his lord called, he was equally proud to answer, taking up spear and armor to march alongside his neighbors, in the very shadow of Lord Hitoni. To War.

Sorry I keep asking questions, so we give a background info, and do we make-up our skill set?  And if so how do we distribute points to them?

No, you don't have stats at all. All you have to do is add lines of description to your actions to increase your chances of success. There's an RPPR actual play of wushu where they play a game of dodgeball to save the world from galactus. It's pretty damn hilarious.

I wasn't planning to be a plotting right hand, just one that is fearsome and incredibly fear. Kinda like Lu Bu, minus the cockroach antenna hat.

All you need is a character background. Zero math involved. You just be as badass as you want. It's the whole point of the system. Unlike most RPGs the more complex the action you take, the better your chances of success.

Well I'd hope so, Maze, cockroach antenna hats are Chinese.

Hmm...well...I've listened to that show, didn't pay much attention to the system and how it works...lemme try this...(I planned on a Hero, but eh)

Ryu Shaos, Commanding Officer of the Red Tiger Army, has trained and fought hard for years to build up his mercenary army, which has been employed by the Toyotomi family as of late.  Shaos, being a mercenary, has an almost fierce loyalty to the Takeda Clan however, and is known to fight for their side at nearly half the cost.  Shaos himself is a tall, almost elegant man, who has a air of calm about him.  But, his enemies on the field of battle fear his skill in the use of the kusarigama, which has been called 'Chain of Fate' by followers of Shaos, due to the blade's almost uncanny ability to find the weak points in an enemy, almost homing in on it.  Known to be bloodied beyond recognition, Shaos is also earning himself the name of 'Bloody Ryu', for practically drenching himslef in the blood of his enemies.  His sanity is sometimes questioned, but his orders are tactical and insightful.

(How's that?)

Fits the Wushu style. Count on me to force you into tough choices and face difficult challenges.
