RPGs / Re: Looking for ideas/feedback for a New World Colony campaign
« on: July 01, 2009, 02:51:29 PM »
Did the first session of in the New world. (Party is lvl 5, this is a continuation of another campaign) Spent a little time in the old world wrapping things up, letting them decide which ship to get on, so they could meet some of the NPC's on the trip and find out about them.

Upon arrival they were asked to scout the beech before bringing in everyone, so they took a small group of soldiers and went in closer. They found a hunting party of lizardmen fishing and cooking a kill of some large animal (dinosaur like). Having two dragonborn among them they decided to see if they could parlay. Ended up being invited to share a meal. They then scouted the nearby forest and found gnoll tracks. The lizardmen explained that the gnolls sometimes try to steal their kills rather than take down their own and were probably waiting until night fall to sneak or attack them. The PC's offered to camp on the beech that evening and trade stories. The soldiers went back to the fleet to report. That night the gnolls attacked, the lizard men and the pc's took down the gnoll raiding party pretty easily with their combined forces. The next morning the lizards departed with their fish/meat to return to the swamp.

The PC's did another scouting session to insure nothing else nasty was nearby and that they got all the gnolls. (Some got away). The soldiers brought in the first load of supplies to build a small fortification for unloading and providing emergency protection. The lumber jack took a group to the forest to start finding more suitable lumber for building. The fleet scouted the coast line and found the grippli island and the river mouth, and decided to send a scouting party to the river to evaluate if they should build there or not. The players decided to head into the forest and make sure the lumber jacks didn't get killed. Found a group of Lemurian skeletons, and killed them. After that they decided they should seek out the "other" tribe the lizards told them about and see about making an alliance, as anything using undead as minions must be evil.
End session 1.

Next session: traveling to look for the gray tooth or tracking down their buried treasure (they have a map they acquired in the old world, ala a pirate map, written it up as sort of a skill challenge but not really.).  Have several  5-6th lvl  encounters depending where they go (a young trex, velociraptors, a giant snake, a young brown dragon, a demon, undead, grippli, gray tooths and black ravens). While they are out the colony will clear the area around the site and build some walls, maybe a main long building for temporary shelter from storms.

Heya Ross, any change your planning to release more of your campaign setting materials? Maps, NPC's, stat blocks?

I'd build it yourself, there are some great guides if your not super savy. Check out www.tomshardware.com they have some guides on custom built systems.

They also do a semi regular article with parts listed from new egg, in 3 price ranges for people to use as a template.

Depending on which games you want to play you can built a pretty nice rig for about $1000 or less these days.

RPGs / Looking for ideas/feedback for a New World Colony campaign
« on: June 14, 2009, 10:46:36 PM »
Heya fellow gamers, I'm prepping the next set of adventures in a campaign, my players are lvl 5, D&D 4e. The new world primer has given me many ideas as it is very close to what I was going to do anyway.

Thus far I'm prepping the colony for the players. I've figured out the basic size of the colony is about 600 strong, a list of businesses or rather the merchants that came over to start a business, the workforce, military size, slaves, etc.. Not trying to decide what other details my players are going to ask.  guessed it took about 10 ships to get that many people here along with some supplies.

My hook for this trip was that back in the old world the players assisted a king in reclaiming an ancient royal crypt, inside they found the undead remains of a cursed adventuring group that had returned from a exploration journey. They had been sealed in the crypt along with everything they had brought back, to keep the curse from spreading. The players had been hired to enter the crypt and get all the gold out, as the kingdoms current economy was in dire straits and they needed whatever they could get, and no longer remembered the curse, or why the crypt had been sealed. At any rate inside the treasure horde they found maps and other things from a far away land, still unexplored in the current day, as well as items, and a sealed coffin from the new world. That's where the players are picking up, and heading to the new world in search of riches and treasure.

I'm trying to just get a general feel prior to moving on, as to what things my players my ask about, want to do, and wanted some feedback. Like should I do much in game other than a narration of the journey across to ocean? What things would you ask you DM if you were heading into this situation as a player?

Thoughts?
Thanks!

Love this primer, I'm starting a campaign that was very similar and this has added a ton of ideas. I've also been listening to the audio for actual play and I love em.  Keep it up!
