So zombies show up at some point? Yeah? (Just a stab in the dark)

Yes, the title is weird. It's actually a quote from a Russian character attempting to express happiness.

That being said, thanks Ross and Tom for reading my letter(s),answering my questions and accepting that small indie game (which I'll link to at the end of this post for anyone who is interested) without sending me something insane back. Like a box full of dead flies, for clown pornography pictures. That would make me 'opposite pleasure smile'.

I also want to say that with the whole being a little soft to kill players, I think Slasher Flick will be great to remedy that. Because each player usually has a few secondary characters who are pretty much destined to die, usually in a horrible way. I'm about to run a one-shot of it tomorrow, hopefully all goes well.

I will endeavor to write more, even if it's just anthological (sp?) short stories or somesuch. Maybe I'll attempt to write a few scenarios or settings for games. You've inspired me, you two gits. =D

Thanks again, all the way from the smelly pirate whore town!

(You can also find this on RPG.net as well as a few scenarios and splatbooks)

Why would we hack a podcast that doesn't matter?

Ohhhh snap!

Ah. I rage-quitted a game once, albeit, I was the GM. It was when I was younger: the players weren't showing up, refusing to learn the game world (This was "Kindred of the East". I actually kind of dislike that game in retrospect...), and generally just dicking around. I actually burned up their character sheets in a woodstove.

Ah, such memories...such red-tinged, rageful memories...

I wasn't worrying as much about the symbolic representation of the cards as much as the imagry linked with them. A symbolic gamer deck would be quite strange.

That was why I linked TPK with Death rather than The Tower, which typically means destruction or misfortune. For the literal spread, I think Mountain Dew or some neutral name for a soda drink which gamers enjoy would be a good replacement for The Tower, seeing as it would be the tallest object on the table. The game Dread might make for a good replacement as well.

I like Tables as one of the suits. Dice, Tables, Books, and Pencils seems like a good base. And it would allow the Major Arcana to focus on player types and gaming events to complete the "picture" of a gaming group.

For Random Encounter I suggest #10, the Wheel of Fate (or Fortune, whichever).

Losing some of the theme linked to the name, I'd remove The Lovers and replace it with The Party, the characters of the players represented in other cards.

Ah, right. Well, in that case, Mountain Dew would be appropriate. Not sure about 'Dread', as it's not as well known as Mountain Dew, for sure. :)

go with GM fury as the death card.

You think? I'm just thinking about what the Tarots actually symbolizes and trying to...you know, put a proper character/situation to it. Since Death is suppose to represent change, Random Encounter is all I could come up with.

Actually, Tower should be Total Party Kill, in my opinion.

Death maybe as Random Encounter

Devil as a Munchkin.

The Lovers as Snugglebunny players.

Today, I was re-listening to Tom two CoC games. Why? Because generally speaking he did a good job on a system he didn't have much experience running. I thought back to when they read my letter on the air and I asked both Tom and Ross what their favorite system was.

One of which was Old World of Darkness,a system near and dear to my heart as well. So much so that in my youth I called all other systems inferior and generally was a big Elitist(fuck :P).

So, then I thought "If Tom was going to run another game, and I had a say in what the game was, what game would I like him to run?"

And my eyes slowly moved across the various titles on my bookshelf, until I saw one title, in particular, which reminded me of epicness.

"The Giovanni Chronicles part 1: The Last Supper"

To those of you who don't know much about that title, I'll summarize: the Giovanni chronicles is a set of 4 books in which players take part in major events surrounding clan Giovanni: from their creation in 1444, all the way up until present day(or rather, what was present day at the time). The Giovanni chronicles are considered to be a very ambitious endeavour, and indeed, is ranked among some of the best material White Wolf has ever published.
It has, from what I can gather, a kind of legendary status among WW fans: if you can run such an indepth and immersive chronicle which spans centuries in-game, with characters who start out confused and meandering and eventually grow into powerful leaders of the undead themselves, you get major props :) (as it's no mean feat).

So, in closing: I say, if Tom has the books and the desire to run it, I know I personally would at least listen in, I'd love to see how he'd run it. The vast majority of us loved his CoC APs, I'd like to see how well he does with a system he's completely familiar with.

How is Howard's Conan stuff? I've never tried to pick up a book, but for some perverse reason I've been having more and more of an interest in it lately, is it worth the time, and how does it compare, in style, to Lovecraft's writing?

It's good. It's no where near as dry and clinical as Lovecraft, and instead it almost feels like you're reading a Greek or Norse myth put down on paper. It's much more dynamic.

If you like Lovecraft, you should read a few of Howard's stories: since the two were buddies (see my rambling on the Age of Masks thread), they reference each others stories from time to time (myths of 'Old Ones' in Hyboria, and I believe the ring of Thoth-Amon makes it's appearance in a Lovecraft story).

Actually, now that I think about it, Cthulian horror and superheroes can actually coexist without it screwing up the theme too bad: Conan the Barbarian fought all sorts Star-spawned, Eldritch things before using only cunning and brawn, and won! (In one comic he actually took on a Great Old One and beat it!)

Lovecraft and Howard were buddies, apparently (or, more like penpals), so every now and then you'd find them referencing each others works in their own respective stories. The big difference just comes from how Lovecraft and Howard responded to the whole concept of the Universe being cold and uncaring: Lovecraft accepts it and wallows in despair and Howard rages against it, maybe even attempting to make the universe notice us.

It's this realization that makes me take back what i said about Cthulian horror and superhero themes being unable to stand by each other in a game.

If I'm not mistaken Ross achieved what he was going for, in that the end was unexpected, and wasn't really horror in my opinion, it was more of a Watchmen ending, with an unexpected twist.  Horror would have faced the heroes off against something they had little hope of defeating, the reality layers ending wasn't really horror in my opinion, and has deep roots in comic books.  I once read a comic by DC where Superman squared off against aliens... not Cthulian horror, just comic idealogy.  Multiple realities seem to me to be a strong comic, super hero theme.  Shrug, just my thoughts.

Actually, in that case, I'd agree with you: it is a comicbook/superhero niche (doesn't Superman usually fight aliens anyway? You know, next to nothing on Earth can mess with him). In retrospect it wasn't very horror. My fault on that, I kind of just thought to myself 'omfg Cthulhu Mythos means Horror!!!!' without thinking about it.(Can you really blame me? :P)

My whole conceit was to explain how a single guy in tights could defeat so many criminals with hand to hand combat and gadgets. The ritualistic angle of superheroes (donning the costume, alter ego, code of conduct, etc) also appealed to me. To me, it's post modern magic and thus works with horror. Also, Watchmen is pretty horrific too. Dr. Manhattan is a newborn Great Old One - there's little difference between him and Yog-Sothoth except personality. Furthermore, the 'good guys' commit genocide.

I guess for me it just seems to clash: with Cthulian horror, the theme is usually "you're doomed", even before you start, even before you were born, you're fucked. With superheroes, even the dark and grim ones, there's always the theme that they will save the world/make it a better place: that their actions will ensure peace. With Cthulian horror, even though you saved the day, you're still going to fail to save the world.

Anyway, I liked what you were attempting to do, Ross. I think I just thought it was hokey that you felt compelled to bring in something from the Cthulhu Mythos to explain it.

I enjoyed the end.  You did not go where I expected you to with the story.

eeehhhh...

I'm so-so in regards to that. I wanted to hear brutal antiheroes choking the bad guy to death/lighting him on fire/(insert Punisher execution here), and, while I won't say it was bad or unimaginative, it...kind of makes Ross look like a one-trick-pony in the sense that it had Cthulian Horror at the end. I enjoy and respect Ross' ability as a GM, but it almost seems as if he can't fully separate himself from horror.

Erm.

I always ask the players to give themselves a round of applause after a campaign or a really good session.
