Well, Newburyport was the inspiration for Innsmouth.

Newburyport was nearby to innsmouth as mentioned in Shadow... but it was more inspired by more decrepit sea towns town the road a bit :-)

Teenagers over several generations break into a tomb and party with the corpses in Newburyport's Old Hill cemetery. I recall the 1985 story well being a teen at the time myself.

I am taking this from Wikipedia but I did also hear this from the "Shadow Over Innsmouth" episode of the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast that Lovecraft called Innsmouth "a considerably twisted version of Newburyport".

Sounds like a cool place to check out if I am ever in New England.

Newburyport has lost much of it's old charm, but there are still some interesting areas to visit. In the 50s and 60s it was likely much closer to what Innsmouth was, but that was after Lovecraft's time. In the 70s it was much improved to draw in the tourists. :-)
