General Chaos / Re: Weirdest Scenario You have Ever Run
« on: May 11, 2016, 08:32:29 PM »
That band game was one that I set up on the boards here a while ago.  I had just finished the poor but entertaining manga "Bremen" and watched a bunch of behind the musics with a heavy dose of Spinal Tap.  I wish I could have had the success you had with it though.

General Chaos / Weirdest Scenario You have Ever Run

Given the increase in madcap antics of the rppr actual plays and plots, I posit the question of what is the weirdest game idea you have ever turned into a working game.

My own would have to be a game of WUSHU in which each player created a Smurf and we ran them through the zombie episode of the smurfs.

The time for wild speculation is nigh...

How do you think they will separate MDC from SDC?  Will they throw that whole stupid mess out the window (MDC rock vs tank has always been a funny discussion-nothing like throwing a rock at someone that levels them and the building behind them.)

Also they finally revised the shaken rules so that you do not end up shaken for 2/3 of the time while everyone else is doing something until they are inevitable shaken to death.  Hopefully they also cleaned up the shotgun rules too.  There is no reason that an entire party should not carry shotguns and just mow down the first wave with the ridiculous damage they put out at short range.  Also a revision on bolt would be nice because every SW game I've played with this it almost certainly ruins the game.

When I saw this I wasn't sure if it was real or if I have failed my last san check.

Los Cthuluchadores: Elder Things in the Wrestling Ring

A wrestling/mythos mashup. Not the oddest mashup out there but truly an odd one.

Play once every two weeks if I'm lucky.  Use to play once every week at the very least. That pesky bastard "real life" eats up my gaming time.

Why not try FUDGE?  You can literally build the system that you want with it.

Watch the underrated movie Cube (but not its horrific sequels).  Since the setup is a Cult compound why not have them storm in ready to kill and then have them chasing down a cult member into a new area.  The PCs follow as they do, the door shut behind them.  Now they are stuck with a cultist in a place designed to kill them at every pass.

Another set of movies to steal from would be the Saw franchise.  Nobody watched Saw after the 4th one so feel free to rip them off.

A good story to read to get ideas would be "I have No Mouth and Yet I must Scream."

For the jump scare player try a room that the other PCs disappear in.  Poof they are gone.  All alone with the quiet.  Alone. Then slowly have them hear something rustling in the distance.  The way out is gone.  A scratching sound like that of nails on a chalkboard slowly from the distance.  Then the light source fails. More sounds.  The player feels something brush past in the darkness.  The scraping is closer.  Right next to them.  Then through the darkness they see two small pinpoints of darkness that seems to somehow be darker than the rest.  Two vacuous holes.  Behind the PC crying can be heard.

Thus a fight in the dark.  Someone crying-choose an NPC that the character knows.  All without the power gamer to bail them out.  The stuff that nightmares fear in their dreams.

For the power gamer simply have them encounter someone who they cannot kill that mocks them as they try.  Have them woefully outmatched.  Bring them to their knees.  Have an arm ripped off.  Sever an artery.

If the player is a whiner about the rules let them notice that they are itchy.  When they investigate have them find a rash that has oozing sores.  Let them spread.  Weaken the power gamer to a level below their compatriots.  Make them taste mortality as their muscles decay.  Their armor is crushing them.  Their sword is too heavy.  Their spells are draining away.  They came in a hero and now fear that they will leave an invalid.  Time is of the essence.

Has anyone tried this?

In this case what I mean is replacing the monster with a mecha instead and running a space opera type game.  It seems like it could work very easily as the basis for Mecha games is the human aspect rather than the giant fighting robot aspect.  This makes relationships dice and shock fit even better...

Any ideas?  I was thinking of burning through the 101 mecha plots on rpg.net and posting some examples here if anyone is interested.

RPGs / Re: It Came From The Used Bookstore

I picked up every book for changeling the lost, dark heresy, rogue trader, and Vampire at a Goodwill for 3 bucks a book.  At a used bookstore I picked up the complete Sandman series of TPBs for 20.

The oddest thing I ever saw was in one these places was a complete set of Hellblazer sitting in the children's literature section...

Ran a game of WUSHU via Roll20 and Google+ hangout. All my players enjoyed it.  I planned on running a game of Marvel Heroic Roleplay, but I had a person that had never played an RPG before so I decided that rules light was the way to go.

The players all found the mapping to be great as did I.  You can make a good looking map in about 3 minutes.  The best feature about the mapmaking is that you can pull images from the net into the game as tokens, maps, and portraits on the fly.

The players were roughly 100 miles apart, which isn't that bad and there was virtually no lag.  If you do not have a group there are tons of players on a very active forum.  The only downside to this is that I have found there to be very few DMs.  The DM to player ratio is something like 100 to 1.  I'm hoping that more GMs and DMs and Moderators and Judges and Storytellers show up soon.  I'm going to be running quite a few games on it and I'll post invites here.

Overall, I would have to say that this is a great way to game and I endorse it.  It is still not as fun as sitting around the table with your friends, but if that is an impossibility this is a great way to game as well.

Also 100 postsssss!!!!!

RPGs / Re: Scion and combat
« on: July 18, 2012, 05:25:52 PM »
I played a few games of Scion and we tried without the combat wheel.  It worked Okay but it quickly became apparent that the game is very reliant on it.  There were many instances in which the game simply screeched to a halt due to the utter brokeness that came from having a set init order and knowing when the opposition went.

As a note Scion is great on paper.  It's a great idea with a great setting.  Then you get to playing the game and it's a whole lot less awesome.  The buckets of dice required as well as the rules exploits (and there were a few that broke the game very early on) make the game nearly unplayable.

They changed their site to integrate a marketplace...apparently they want to make some money DLC Style.  Some of the things look cool like the 8-bit characters.

I've been playing around with the interface a bit, and it seems a lot better than tabletop forge right now. It isn't quite at the level of maptools yet, but it is promising.

The only thing I cannot figure out is why there is a music player.  It seems kinda distracting.

oh btw hell doesn't freeze over unless the synnibarr kickstarter is successful

Too bad his amount is so insane.  I guess that's what happens when you plan on releasing not 1 but 4 different books at the same time for a game system as obscure as Synibarr.

The proposed releases are:
Synibarr: Invicta
Synibarr: Ultimate Adventurer's Guide
Synibarr: the Worldship Atlas
Synibarr: the Book of Fate
and
The Synibarr Game Master's Screen

The site says it has a new game engine. My god, it could be the motherload.  The MC Escher of charts and tables.  You could roll on charts from birth till death and still have five rerolls to go before you have a class...you could be forced to use non-euclidean geometry and be lost forever in madness.  The asylums will fill with the moaning of the damned.  It will usurp reality and make it its own.

The only question left to ask others will be:

Do you read Raven McCraken?
