Got episode 1 of U-boote Heraus on. Not going to make a big announcement until Itunes accepts it but YOU THE LOYAL FANS get first crack at it. Feel free to spread the word, tweet about it, whatevers.
-
Neat.
-
I've been listening to Dig To Victory, end to end, for the last week to help me get into condition for this.
-
Right on! Feeding my AP addiction...
-
Goddamn Itunes won't let people submit new podcasts it seems like http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10551531&tstart=0
Anyway feel free to comment on the site design - I just finished and would like some feedback
-
woot woot!
-
From the posts on the link above, it seems as if the iTunes issue was worked out. I need that AP feed!

Holy crap, the new AP logo is for the win... who did that?
-
I heart U-Boote Heraus.
- Ross crits his warning shot. "Take THAT, ocean!"
- The players' reactions when they realized they'd taken the orphans to the Wrong Island.
- "Should we clean the blood out of the lifeboat before we put kids in there?"
I think I can wait until Part II before I write another slobbery fanboy letter to Scott Glancy. We'll see.
-
u-boote session 2 is up.

u-boote session 2 is up.
And now I have a boner.
By the way, turns out my girlfriend hates Scott Glancy. At least she hates him when I'm running his voice out my computer speakers at 6am on a weekend and laughing.

Is it up on the Zune network as well sir?

doh. Forgot to add it to the zune network. I'm sure you can manually add it - http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/feed/ but I'll reinstall the zune software so I can add it.
-
Might make this podcast biweekly now that I think about it. One new world campaign episode a week until it's caught up and one other game.
Hmmm...
-
I would like that. A lot.

I need to reinstall the zune software to submit but have you tried adding hte rss feed to Zune? There should be a way to manually add a podcast, I would think.

He hasn't posted in like, five minutes or five days, whichever, so I'm filing with district court to have him delcared legally dead. That way we can divide his post count among ourselves.

Aw, come on! Don't frown at me. I'm sure each member of the RPPR crew has, at least once (probably several times in Tom's case) waken up from a long nap or concussion to discover you going through their pockets.
It's nothing to be ashamed of, man. We all wish our friends would die so we could take their stuff. It's the gamer way: survivor gets that loots.

We have played with random something awful goons so as long as you aren't a hyperactive little kid with an annoying voice or an immature teenage prick, you should be fine.
And we actually need to get a few more players on a regular basis so we can start trying expert runs. Got just about all the other achievements.
-
Sweet, guest player. And I love that character. Stole him and put him in the Epic Tier game I'm running, in fact. The party doesn't really like him.
-
I just had to sign up because the name dropping of the Tomb of Horrors - and the complete lack of reaction from the players - had me laughing out loud at work. Luckily no one was around!
I really liked Brighteyes the NPC from the thieves' guild episode, so was surprised to like Brian's portrayal of the character - but the voice and attitude were fun!
And yes, the character is such fun, so I think I will steal him aswell and use him as the 'innocent' alter-ego of an evil gnome wizard in a play-by-post game. Shh, dont' tell my players :)
-
Haha, thats great. Glad that people like Bright Eyes. Brian was a good player before he moved. Also, who doesn't like a crazy gnome killer?
-
In my group: the Goliath with a knife in his back who's too big to chase said gnome down a very small tunnel.
-
Yeah mad props to Brian, AND
Mike for his Statement of honoring agreements! That was like "bam! Fuck what you thought!" I like the direction he seems headed.
As for other AP comments, We do get to hear Tom's Mutant and Masterminds game right? PLEASE OH PRETTY PLEASE.
I'll send noodz.

haha. that is a good one. still my fave is dig to victory. dont worry you'll be like the rest of us soon enough waiting for ross to post a new one while relisting to the faves of the past.
-
I found myself randomly laughing to myself at work today when the phrase came to mind
"Of course we didn't kill them... We're German... We would have just shot them" when referring to horribly mutilated bodies.

I have to admit for some reason my version of dig to victory is only 20mins long (dunno what happened there, possible Itunes cockup). Loving the AP's though. Unfortunately eating them up ravenously the second i find its been released. 08.55am GMT 15mins before work starts and I'm already 45mins into Pastoral Manor.
Singing Hedgehogs? AWESOME IMPROV!!
-
I honestly can not discribe why I like dig to victory so much. just everything about it was so well played out. It was one of my first CoC games I ever heard, so maybe thats why I like it so much. U-Boat is great too and I love the langth of it. but sadly I do find my self burning threw them too fast haha!

Try manually downloading Dig to Victory http://slangdesign.com/rppr/2008/08/actual-play/actual-play-call-of-cthulhu-dig-to-victory/ to get the whole episode. Right click save as - you know the drill.

Yeah, I bought Delta Green because of Dig to Victory.
This AP is turning out to be interesting. All this time I've never had any idea how a game of Monsters actually goes and now I'm finding out: really strangely.

I have an AP of MAOCT author Ben Baugh running Candlewick Manor (I'm a player yaaaay). There is a horde of mongooses fighting snakes and that isn't even the weirdest part.
I also ran a Monsters game set in the kingdom of Oz. I don't want to spoil what happens but I was laughing so hard at one point I couldn't breathe or talk.
-
I did some looking into that sort of thing while ago when I saw an RPG that was set in Oz. That place is fucked up, man.

I think I remember you talking about that in one of your podcasts... You should definitely put up that AP... I'd love to hear it played out.
-
I'm a little stunned to read that there are folks out here who were lead to Delta Green (modern alien conspiracy meets Lovecraft) because they heard me running WWI Call of Cthulhu scenarios...
I guess some folks are just crazy enough to assume that if we're good at one genre, then we might not suck at another. Wait 'til you hear some of the Wild West scenarios we've done. Or even the ones where we played indians on the Great Plains during the 1930s... those were pretty damn cool too.
I'm talking with Ross Payton about recording more Pagan Publishing playtests... this time of scenarios that are actually in print so you can run out and by them if you like what you hear.
It'll just take some research and price comparison to find the right recording device and find a crew of playtesters who are interested in allowing themselves to be recorded. I'm not sure the guys at Pagan (the writers and editors) would be comfortable with that. With any luck I'll scare up some local players, or I'll record some con games. In any case, we are working on bringing more actual play recordings to RPPR.

Just out of curiosity, how many/how long (time wise)/how much (memory wise) actual plays are recorded (roughly, if you happen to know)?

Over 30 episodes easily. New World has about a dozen left - ten more from Gencon and Dragoncon - Tom ran 1 game of CoC for me and aaron, plus a few sessions of Mutants and Masterminds. I played in a few 4E games last summer - prolly about 6 or 7 - and I have a 2 session game of CoC based on the video game Prototype - I just ran a game of All Flesh Must Be Eaten based on the movie Daybreakers - Bill ran a one shot of Don't Rest Your Head - Cody has run 2 sessions of his New World prequel game so far, I ran a game of CoC and Fear Itself with Patrick and Karee as guest players and I'm sure I'm missing a few other games.
Probably over 100 hours altogether
-
do you still have the new world going or is it over now?

We took a break for the holidays. Finished Paragon Tier. When we start back up it will be Epic tier.
-
sweet happy to hear this keep up the good gamming. ;D

We were hoping that we would get to catch up over the x-mas brake but ross has bee to bussy or something..... ;D

I have a good stockpile now but we can go weeks without recording a new game and even when I do game, it's usually 1 game a week - I don't want to find myself in a position where I have no AP episodes to post.
I still might post more for a limited time or something. When Arc Dream does a ransom for my road trip campaign, I'll release more monsters AP episodes obviously

I really want to try Monsters and Other Childish Things with some of my friends, and I'd like to check out the road trip campaign for sure (hopefully I'll be able to play before that is ransomed)...
-
I like it all, don't get me wrong. but I can't get enough of the new world its like a good book seris "like forgotten Realms" I can't put it down when there is one to listne to and i can't wait to get the next one.
I have withdraws after a while if i dont get a new world AP or when its been a while since my last sacrifice to the great one.
:o

sorry I went so long without posting a new AP episode. My internal "post something on RPPR" clock was reset because I posted episode 40 last week.
Anyway, to make up, I'll post cody's fanfic reading shortly and announce a brand new project. Tonight or tomorrow.

Exactly! If medications become free than everybody would have them and the robot's food supply would become large enough that they could support a much higher population. Republicans know the truth so they tried to block the process. Democrates are vulnerable to Obama's mind control ray (Obama is, of course, a robot as well) because the ray is blue.

Ross's reactions to Aaron's actions are hysterical in the newest upload.
I actually love Aaron's actions, he plays the good guy so straight it's an inspiration!

That's not playing. Aaron really is that pure. Trust me.
-
I really liked the scenario for a short, relatively simple scenario. Definitely had a cool pacing from a kind of slow relaxed start, quickly ramping up to some cool action...
-
I get confused with Aaron's roleplaying whenever I listen to him. His in and out of character talk blends together and since his personality and the character's are normally the same it's often difficult to tell the difference.
In this one, with Ross, it was alot easier since he was using the accent.
-
Man Ross's dice were on fire for this scenario. Talk about saving the day
I'm a big fan of Ross as a player, and I love Tom's deadpan delivery of Grady's lines.
Kudos to Tom, that was a really great scenario.
-
Hey Ross, I don't want to nitpick or anything bu the AP podcast website's drop down menus aren't updated to reflect the World of Darkness system. You've probably already changed it and it just has to ftp or something but I'm just letting you know.
-
thanks. I had to update the settings on the wordpress template.

Hiya
New poster, but been listening for a bit. I just recently got to listen to the Candlewick AP, and I have to say that it was a blast. You guys really were fantastic, and it was obvious that you were all enjoying it a lot.
I love games where children are the stars. It really mixes things up. Years ago, I ran a Changeling one-shot at a local convention called Along the Cherry Lane. All the characters were between eight and ten, and it was a blast.
-
Going to post a new AP tomorrow. The catch is that it won't be one of the preview episodes. As you may have noticed, I go New world, NOT new world, New World, NOT new world. This week is NOT new world.
Any requests?
-
Got any Con Games in the wings? I love the RPPR crew but sometimes it's nice to remember some of the crazy fuckers who the rest of us have to deal with all the time.
-
got a bunch
I'll post age of masks con game tomorrow
-
Nice.

The Wild Talents version? Because I do so enjoy the One Roll Engine system.
-
The Age of Masks AP made m&m seem like a shitload of confusing used to ice a cake of complication.
So yeah is it Wild Talents?

wild talents
yeah
it is still confusing

Your games have layers upon layers?
-
M&M didn't sound confusing so much as annoying with opposed rolls versus every damned action. I've found that Wild Talents isn't any less complicated though. My group just about had aneurysms creating characters and trying to play a test scenario. Once you learn it, it's pretty straightforward and simple.

I don't think Mutants and Masterminds actually has that. I can only assume it's a rule variant or something because I can't find it in my copy.
I just bought Wild Talents along with some other ORE books.
-
I've said it earlier but I'll say it again. I had no idea what I was doing in the M&M version of Age of Masks.
-

I remember. I brought it up way back when. Neil wasn't around for that so it needed to be explained again. And again. And maybe once after that as well.
-
We should play M&M again. As long as we try and be somewhat serious with it because the game turns to shit when people get slap happy pappy with it.

Speaking of which, I'm listening to that second Prototype game and I have to say the level of "what the fuck are you doing?" rises pretty quickly. Not even half way through the game you and Tom are avoiding the other characters, in game, whenever possible. Hilarious now. Must've sucked then.

I HATED that game because the first one was all about investigation and very little action while the second game was just gun masturbation. Seriously, time out how much time is wasted with people arguing about what kind of guns they want to take and you'll fucking go insane.
"I WANT A D.EAGLE!"
"OMG ME TOO! D.EAGLES ARE TEH AWESUM!!!"
I'm still fucking bitter about it.

Ross had mentioned it so often I thought that he was exaggerating but my god. Those where some dudes who where not used to Call of Cthulhu.
-
Call of Cthulhu is not used to gun masterbation.
Don't hate the game.
-
Call of Cthulhu is not used to gun masterbation.
Have you ever seen the back of the Delta Green book? Stroke fest.
I mean there's there for flavor and because the guys who wrote it are nuts about stuff like that (just listen to any of the APs with Scott Glancy), but it can get a little crazy.
-
yeah but guns are fucking useless against the truly scary shit in CoC. Hell, in the prototype game do you think any gun would have been able to take down Alex Mercer or the monsters that gave him a problem?
-

In the game, the weapons are awesome against basic walkers, especially in large groups but only after you fully upgrade them (by eating dudes who know how to use them).
They don't do shit against Hunters.

I think you guys may be overlooking a specific component of the equation. Guns don't mean shit if the player isn't a good action role player to begin with. Who cares if you have a D.Eagle anyway if as a player you don't have the competency to understand an action sequence.

If you've heard the second Proto-type game than you know two people who care and three people who don't.
-
In the game, the weapons are awesome against basic walkers, especially in large groups but only after you fully upgrade them (by eating dudes who know how to use them).
They don't do shit against Hunters.
What did I use in the game? I don't remember.
-

I haven't yet. I'm just saying that generally people that become over obsessive with their weapon choices like how Cody described don't usually understand how to use them in an action sequence (and probably don't understand the physics of how the firearms work). [rant] Action movies, physics BS, fracka, fracka, fracka...[/rant]
-
Basically: You're not going to punch out Cthulhu with a shotgun.

I think I follow you.

Wait, the game the recording or the actual game "Prototype"?
In the AP the players use submachine guns (I don't remember the specific gun, though one of the players who wasn't Tom or Cody mentioned it) and pistols (Dester Eagles and 9mms because you wouldn't let Tom have a .45 (a wise choice I felt)) to blow the shit out of Walkers when they hit a hot zone because walkers are basically running zombies. But when they try to attack a wounded Hunter they unload the entire clip of an M4 into it's head, throw a flame grenade on it, and then still nearly get killed by it before getting away. Then they decided to get more guns.
In the video game, Hunter didn't fuck around. It takes like three or four missles from the shoulder launchers to kill one of them, depending on the difficulty mode. They make for a pretty good CoC enemy.
I find it funny how after the failed effort to even hurt the Hunter, Cody just sort of gave up trying to keep playing it as an investigation game because it was clear half the party just wasn't going to play that way. He started trying to acquire mental disorders, get the two guys into situations where they'd die, and repeatedly refers to their characters as meat shields.
-
I really, really liked the most recent AP. The Oz series is one of my favorite children's series, and the re-imagining of it was an amazing stroll down memory lane. That campaign or whatever seems really cool and I must say the APs are excellent advertising for it.
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason the other nations weren't mentioned? I don't think it made that much of a difference, just was something I noticed...
-
Eh, wanted to keep the game focused basically. Didn't want to drag in even more complications than there already was.
-
oh man this new Delta Green AP was fucking great
it sucks that I had to record it in such a noisy environment
but man oh man was it fun to run
also I based it on notes from Scott Glancy so yeah

I'm about halfway through the Delta Green AP right now... pretty bad ass. I'll try to give my thoughts after I get through all of it.
I'm not really that familiar with the setting, but the premise seems perfect for CoC. You avoid most of the "suspension of disbelief" bullshit common with pairing a ninja mercenary, esoteric professor, and street detective together.
Great job!

That began furiously masturbating at the first sign of trouble... it's funny how you can feel the awkward through the audio.
The plane/parachute encounter was excellent. I really liked when the parachute cords were cut.

My favorite part was the magic lucky skull.

Yeah that was good role playing of the skull.

oh my god
I just ran the most amazing new World of Darkness game - based it on Candle Cove. I framed it as a one shot but so much shit happened that we are going to have to finish it Wednesday. I am going to put both parts together and post it as one long game soon because it was seriously great. Players got very creeped out, some great roleplaying and the plot revolved around a three way struggle for a VHS tape of the Candle Cove show. The players had the tape but a cult AND the Skin-Taker were both after the tape.
Oh man, was it fucking awesome. Cody you missed the best game. It was even better than the Arcadia Signal.

Hmm... Last time you were excited about a game it turned out pretty amazing (the newest Delta Green game). So by precedent, this should be too...

This sounds like epicness mixed with awesomeness, combined with a side order of a reality where a puppet really does have a coat made from children's skins.
YES!
-
I don't know if I can listen to that in my normal manner for APs. I was getting pretty freaked from the short story reading. I'm gonna have to wait for a bright and sunny day.

Didn't you play Firestarter in the Modern Day Gentlemen game?
-
That was like 2 years ago. but yes. Thank you for reminding me.
-
Tad you have a great memory. I barely remember listening to that game at all.
-
For APs, yes. For RPGs in general, yes. For most other things, not so much. I listen to nearly all of the games repeatedly. There's lots of little trival things I can call to memory for most of the actual players.
I was just recently replayed the U-Boat Heraus APs on "Fast" speed so that everyone sounds like tiny forest creatures, exceptionally entertaining, before Candle Cove came out.
-
That's good to hear. What happened to Kell the tavern owner in New World?
Also holy shit check out the newest comment on candle cove
Guys, this was absolutely amazing.
I’ve never been so drawn into an actual play like this one before, I listened to all six hours in one go. I actually felt sad at the end, realizing that’d probably be the last I would hear of these characters. The players all role played fantastically, their friendships were as compelling as they were humorous. There were quite a few heartwarming moments in there, and overall, I just have to say, this affected me on a level RPG’s rarely do.
It was alternating between hillarious and terrifying, which in my opinion is the most effective way for horror to work in an RP game. It doesn’t leave everyone bummed out after the game, and it creates the greatest moments.
I do have one thing to say though.
I started listening to it at midnight, and ended as the sun rose.
And then I realized I had class that morning. S**T!
Any chance RJ (I believe that’s the players name, the priest) will be appearing in other APs? I enjoyed his character, and how well he roleplayed. Also, the voice he used when convincing people made me laugh my ass off. While that is a simple feat when your high on sleep deprivation, it still earns a mention.
So all in all, I loved it, keep ‘em coming.
-
It's beautiful :'(
-
There is some excellent back and forth between the characters on all sides. In both of the World of Darkness games there was alot more of that than I've seen from most APs, which might be something about the systems since the two games up using it don't share any players.
"Your prefectly good looking. We're not having this arguement again."

I have to say, it's one of my favorite pieces to work on in a long time, for exactly the same reason. I have to give Wizards some credit for the Warforged design. They all have the :3 face and it makes them amazingly emotive for robots.

Any possibility we might get a new episode before Saturday morning?
I've got Relay for Life and would love to have something to listen to in the case that I'm walking from like 3-5AM or something...

Awesome! I just introduced my group to Wild Talents, we're going to force it on our Super Hero GM. The Other AP was pretty well convinced me that MM was not the only game out there for making up bullshit heroes. And since our group is FUCKING ADULTS I don't believe coercion rolls(vs PCs) will ever even come up.

Made me chuckle.

I liked the newest AP. Having listened to the previous Age of Masks games, it was fun to kind of pick up on things that were more subtle and think about differences and what not...

It's easy enough to overlook. It sounds like (and in fact, IS) a standard GM response to a player request/question. The only reason it became a deal at all was because the player got upset and blogged about it.

Yeah, I don't think Ross even said the word no, if I recall correctly it was more, let's let everyone decide what they want to do...
-
Ross I have a question.
After finally listening to Candle Cove I just had a thought.
RJ was pretty much trapped in the show/alternate dimension correct?
Would anything have happened if he went to talk with the guardian jaguar (or was it a leopard?)
Could he have escaped or finally killed the skin-taker?
-
pretty much everything in the candle cove world was just a prop except for the skin taker. Only the skin taker had a free will and possessed any real intelligence. So it would have been just the priest and the skin taker and the skin taker is an immortal demon that has existed since before the dawn of mankind. Does that answer your question?
-
Yeah. I thought the jaguar was some sort of other entity, like opposed to the Skin-taker.
-
nope just a construct built by the director and the director based it on tropes from kid's tv and literature. So it was basically a pre-programmed magical robot.
-
Someone emailed me for advice on running Candle Cove. This is my reply.
What was the Skin Taker supposed to be? I was leaning towards goetic demon from Mage but I don't have the mage book so I purposely left it vague. It is whatever works best for your game.
From a game design perspective, Candle Cove was meant to emulate a Hitchcock film's basic structure: multiple characters chasing after the same macguffin - in this case, the Candle Cove VHS. In order to make it more dynamic, I had two opposing antagonists: the cult and the skin taker. The cult had very limited supernatural resources so they relied on mundane techniques - goons, subterfuge and the like. The skin taker could only briefly manifest in the real world so it was limited as well. This set up gave me a lot of latitude in running encounters and keeping things exciting.
Hope this helps.
-

This is my favorite quote:
Yeah, this is totally an April Fools joke.
Though knowing this group, if they really did have a CoC game that ended in summoning Azathoth and ending the world, they'd be touting it as the greatest game in the history of the universe. One of the other games they keep bringing up on their podcast as best game ever was a Call of Cthulhu yakuza game that ended with the PCs taking a machine gun off a crashed WW2 fighter, hauling it over to their enemies' 200-man-strong fortress, annihilating half of them, and then charging the other hundred in a big, all-out battle where they're just slaughtered, and it all ends with the last surviving PC leaping out a third-story window, katana in hand (because of course in a yakuza game, ya gotta have katanas) to take down one last enemy before dying a swift and messy death.

Just finished listening to the Cyberpunk AP.
Dear god. I think I nearly had a heart attack from laughing so much.
I love everybody complaining about the combat at the end, how easy it was, and I'm just sitting there thinking: you all just had a shoot-out in a hotel hallway with five dudes. If that WASN'T easy, then there'd be a problem with the combat.
Overall a fantastic AP.
-
Listening to you mock the GrimDark Future of Cyberpunk 2020 brought back fun memories of how wonderfully stupid that setting was.
And simultaneously, how fun it could be if you embrace the stupid.
The whole GaGa element was just icing on the cupcake, I think.
-
i'm pretty sure the spiral into violence and depravity can be sourced to a single utterance:
"how dare you disrespect lady gaga"
-
hahahaha "she's a... princess!" hahaha

I'm surprised Ross made such a strong complaint about the rail-roading start to the campaign when Road Trip starts the same way (nanites = curse etc.).
I really enjoyed listening to this session otherwise.

I really enjoyed listening to this session otherwise.
If you read Road Trip, the intro gives several options to motivate the PCs into fighting the cult. The curse of the underworld doesn't have to affect the PCs.
The cyberpunk game felt like bait and switch to me - we were given one premise at the start of the game and then forced into another one at the end without any chance to figure out the betrayal or escape from the situation.

If you read Road Trip, the intro gives several options to motivate the PCs into fighting the cult. The curse of the underworld doesn't have to affect the PCs.
The cyberpunk game felt like bait and switch to me - we were given one premise at the start of the game and then forced into another one at the end without any chance to figure out the betrayal or escape from the situation.
well to be fair look what you did to tom's game when he wasn't forcing you into inescapable japanese nanomachine prisons or whatever
you should be ashamed
(ps run cyberpunk again)

EDIT: Realized this was probably a lot more vague and unclear than I wanted it to be. Was trying to reference Ocarina of time and trying to stop Navi from talking...

I'm going on another trip
leaving tomorrow
will be back on the 21st
but
I did post Aaron's game

I did post Aaron's game
http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/2010/08/systems/call-of-cthulhu/call-of-cthulhu-divine-fire-at-gencon-2010/
Again, thank you to everybody who made this possible. With that being said, I thought the game went alright, though I expect there will be some questions (BTW you will be able to hear happy yelling at Toms game in this recording as well). If you have any advice, constructive criticism and such please let me know. I really did have fun running this scenario and am anxious to try another one (seeing as at least 4 out 6 people participating in this game told me they enjoyed the experience).
-
Hooray! Ross is awesome.
I promise never to be an annoying shit again.

Aaron I can assure you I will be as delightfully honest as possible once I complete the entire recording.

Aaron I can assure you I will be as delightfully honest as possible once I complete the entire recording.
I'm going to hold you to that, being a fellow member of the Hawaiian Shirts Corps
-
Half an hour in to Aaron's GenCon game.
This is a really good AP so far.
-
Half an hour in I am enjoying it also. I would say two things; more flower to your flavour and be speak with confidence, I dont' want the man swallowing my soul to um and aw!
like, you're like, being like eaten by like a rat-like thing.
-
How much of the AP is part of the material, and how much is made up? Like the escape from the truck seems new compared to the versions of Divine Fire I've heard.
-
well like i think like umm that like that like its just modified.
-

Are you referring to
the PCs escaping through the latrine? That was part of Tom's as well, though going through the gate, the players in my game did take the initiative to search the watchtowers.
-
No, the part with the Truck seemed a new addition (probably 50% done on the fly, 50% semi-planned.)
-
@Sal Tom's ran the game a couple more times since we've heard it I believe
Anyway, I liked the AP, will comment on it once I am a little less visitor-less :D
-
since the Zoom H2 or whatever was at aaron's game does that mean we don't get audio of any other gencon games?
-
Ean had an H2 at Tom's game, so that should be fine. Ross recorded the after hours games and the Road Trip I was at also ( Tom, Aaron, Ean and Violet were there also ).
-

EXCELLENT. Judging by what I could overhear of Tom's game during the recording of Aaron's, that'll be a fun AP to listen to.
-
the Zoom H2 has gained sentience and has either achieved temporal displacement or cloning technologies.
Be afraid.
-
oh my god was there an adam scott glancy game
please ross
don't break my heart
-

yeah there was
but honestly the ben baugh wild talents game with 10 players was better
-
No, the important queston BA should be asking is - did both of those games get recorded? *hopeful*
-
Ean had his H2 at the recording, so I'm pretty sure he was the one recording. In any case Toms Liberty Island has been recorded by someone.

Greetings from

Got any questions for The Signal?
-
hahaha
what state is that in
-
Michigan. I was up there over the weekend.
What's funny is that it is a rural farming town with only one gas station. It's also got a summer camp (Camp Arcadia) on the beach of Lake Michigan with the hull of a sunken ship buried in the shoreline (and some ghost stories). I tried to post it to the forums, but there's no cell signal out there.
I think I might make it into a Road Trip side adventure.
-
BTW, I revisited Arcadia Kansas in this week's AP - of course this time we are using A Dirty World - an ORE film noir game.
-
Sweet. Downloading now.
In a related story, I just started writing up my Camp Arcadia adventure. Well, I had written up part of it before, but I lost my work, got frustrated, and let it sit for awhile.
-
The new AP has pretty much sold me on A Dirty World. When I get some money, anyway. You guys have a really good handle on the dark corners of the gaming universe, and hardboiled crime stories is apparently no exception.
-
I wanted to run a realist game for a while and since I got aDW at gencon, it seemed like a good fit.
-
Yeah, except all of your 'realistic scenarios' usually end with me nearing or in the woodchipper. ;D
-
well that gypsy did say that's how you're going to die in real life so I AM TRYING TO BE FAITHFUL TO REALITY
-
No, the gypsy said cursed to die in a woodchipper. Curses can be circumvented. Unless you're Lon Chaney.
Edit: Corrected. Kids, don't let your friends post at 3 in the morning.
-
No, the gypsy said cursed to die in a woodchipper. Curses can be circumvented. Unless your Lon Chaney.
Aaron has a gypsy curse?
-
It's true. The first stage of the curse has already manifested. Aaron is no longer able to use the correct form of your/you're in a sentence.
-

Meh, that's ok, I was sick earlier this week, and I swear I was robbed of my ability to use commas for several hours. It was horrible.
-
My vote for the next episode to be the slender man one. I watched the marble hornets youtube account videos and they scared the crap out of me.
-
New World Gaiden wouldn't happen to be anything like Charles Barkley Gaiden, would it?
-
You mean "Charles Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden; Part 1 of the Hoops Barkley Saga"? You had better not be bad-mouthing one of the greatest role-playing games of our generation. And I cannot wait for Gamma World so I can make an adaptation of it.
-

Hey, I agree. That game was everything a JRPG should strive for:
-No Grind
-Actual Gameplay during combat
-Interesting and memorable characters
-A plot that halfway makes sense
The game had only minor flaws in that they went for a couple really dumb jokes near the end (e.g. the "The Shrekimono"), and they occasionally recycled a bad sprite.
-
My vote for the next episode to be the slender man one. I watched the marble hornets youtube account videos and they scared the crap out of me.
I second this, but with an addendum: this should be the AP posted after the next New World game. Which should be next.
-
going to do Slenderman next because I never post 2 D&D games in a row
-
I have intentionally avoided everything related to Slenderman because I know it will haunt me for eternity D:
But I will be compelled to listen to the AP regardless. Damned curiosity.
Oh, and the Shrekmono was ridiculous. And the crappy recycled sprite was intentional. At least I hope so.
When I get home, I will record myself impersonating Cody impersonating Ross impersonating Cody impersonating Ross.

The question is which Slender Man game? The tapletop game with the RPPR crew or the contributor Skype game?

tabletop because I refined it from the skype game - added some more twists and turns

THIS IS WHAT I KNOW: Jun 17, 12:50 PM
me: fun game last night
Ross: yeah
I do have this thing about abstract endings
me: it was a really good investigation game too
Ross: but it's hard to balance that out
me: all the players were hardcore investigators
Ross: between making it too vague or too obvious
it depends on the players too
me: I don't think it was that obvious
Ross: you picked up on it easy
-
Where is that, "We don't got that B-Roll!" line from? RiffTrax?
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SItFvB0Upb8
"Kirk Gibson hitting the game winning home run in the 1988 world series? NO! That is too specific."
-
Slender Man.
HELL YES.
Listening to this straight through all day.
-
"Here at our warehouse... No, that's a B-Roll too!"
I like how he stares so intently at the camera after his specificity rant. How dare you make such a demand of him.
Ross will the Box of Pain be involved because Slenderman is pretty creepy as is D:
-
there are worse things than the box of pain...as you will find out in the Slender Man AP
:D :D :D
-
In all seriousness, I don't know if I can listen to the AP. I read a few sentences of the Slender Man article on the Marble Hornets wiki and now I'm nauseous. I have a very visceral reaction to horror.
I wonder if I could adapt this concept to World of Darkness (mortals) or something. Maybe make it the primary antagonist of a Gamma World campaign.

Ross, did you ever watch the http://www.brightfalls.com/ (http://www.brightfalls.com/) videos?
They're an Alan Wake companion piece but stand pretty well on their own.
Also they are one of the few things I ever watched that terrified me for a week straight. I still get shivers thinking about it.
-
Did you actually print out a map of Fiddler's Green for the players, Ross? Real-life materials make everything fifty percent creepier.
Oh, did you guys introduce the new player? He only provided background for his character, I don't think anybody mentioned his name.
"I have an additional language - French."
"You can only make out the word 'Paris'."
"I hear that word is the same in French."
-
Honestly I think the most impressive thing so far about this AP (1:03 in) is that you got Aaron to play.
Also that I don't want to look in any mirrors.
-
1:57 into the AP.
"It moves."
I nearly shit myself.

Considering I watched most of the Marble Hornets videos at night on release dates I was a little more than freaking out.
-
It's a good thing I have the Santa Claus game lined up after I listen to this one.
I just marathoned Marble Hornets and that creeped me out. It's okay, though. I didn't need to sleep tonight. Or ever.

Before the Skype game we were all (re)watching episode 26, which was a great way to get in the mood for the game.
-
Best thing about your horror investigation games? Listening to a bunch of smart-asses freak out In Character.
There's something to playing "average" people in extraordinary circumstances that really seems to click.
-
It's not the skype game.
>:( >:( >:(
I LIKE THE SOUND OF MY OWN VOICE OKAY

I LIKE THE SOUND OF MY OWN VOICE OKAY
Apparently this game was supposed to be "better," but I didn't see any better RP'ing.
-
Yeah, at the end Ross said that you guys found the fraud in the city. Was that how you "broke" the game?
-

It was better in that I had better material for the recorded city - the guardians and so forth

I won't tell how we broke the game. Ross will just have to post it. Let's just say we figured it out early and then had to figure how to execute our plan.
-
So Ross just told me the only way he's releasing the Skype version of the Fiddler's Green / Slender Man game is as a ransom episode. That's right, the only way anyone will hear the better version of the game is by paying for it.
Also, double post. Deal with it. 8)
-
Nice AP, though I do have one slight problem with it. (soilered for people who haven't listen to the game yet.)
Slender Man's origin and motives. Moreover, the fact that he has an origin and motive.Slender Man is supose to be an enigma wrapped inside another enigma wrapped inside a fine suit made of enigma fibers.Giving him a human backstory makes him, well, more human. It makes him more relatable and less scary. Now he does have an objective (spread) , but he he does it should be unkown. I'm not trying to say "YOUR DOING THE SLENDERMAN MYTHOS WRONG" I'm just saying your missing out on one of the greatest fears you can offer: the fear of the unknown.
Also, the radio show you were thinking of is Coast to Coast AM (http://www.coasttocoastam.com)
This is the rumor I based Slender Man on: (from http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=120418 )
Take a look at some of your old photos. Do you have one that's a street scene, maybe from a vacation? Look at it closely. See that guy in the background, in the dark suit? You have to look carefully the first time.
Now look at some other photos. See that figure in the background? Yup, same guy.
He's in the background of a lot of your pictures. Anything where there's a crowd. Always a crowd. He doesn't want to stand out. It's not just you. He's in everyone's pictures. He's stuck there, has been for a hundred and fifty years. Back in 1839 he stopped for a shoeshine, and Daguerre trapped him. He's been trying to find a way out ever since.
Try looking at the pictures again in a few years. He'll be a little closer to the camera.
I know there's a fine line between under and over explaining stuff in horror but these scenarios help me figure out the Slender Man mythos. Once I'm fully satisfied with the underlying structure of my take of Slender Man, I'll probably leave it a little less explained. Also, it's bullshit if you don't explain a weird horror thing enough - the horror of realizing what the supernatural really is is also pretty scary.

All you need to explain is what Slendy does, not who he is or why he does it. If you most give him a backstory, don't make him a human, make him an idea. He should be the reson parents tell their kids not to go too far into the woods or not stay out at night. People don't know what came first Slendy or the storys about him. All they know is that he's been here for a while. (http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii143/colmstead/7873c50b980c88ad78f6d03841ab776712976e63.jpg)
Once again, not trying to diss your interpretation. I've always wanted to have a MaoCT game where Slender Man is a reverse engineered, anti-monster MIB shock troopers

I'm sure you're just as experience in horror as Ross is. As in, I'm sure you've written a few horror films and filmed one of your own and written and GM'ed over 1000 horror games, but that could be the most cliche idea ever.
+10 points for defending ross' honor. good job. :-\

I honestly didn't have a problem with "defining" Slender Man's origins, it fit in pretty well with the way the game was run.
The only thing I wish is that the game was about 3 hours longer.
I was seriously enjoying the confrontation right before all the PCs get dragged into the 'corridor', and I was kinda disappointed when it was ended so abruptly.
Plus I have a feeling that the 'corridor'/end world had a shitton more terrifying or bizarre stuff in it that the PCs never got a chance to see.
-
The only thing I wish is that the game was about 3 hours longer.
I would say this about most of the one-shots that are showcased. There's only so many hours in the week and there's so many games to play, so it's not reasonable for RPPR to give full treatment to the games they play. I like to think that they're demoing the product and trying to get you, the window-shopping customer, to buy it and try it yourself.
I also think that something like Slender Man is only scary in still form with people making stories about him. Half the shit you saw in "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" wouldn't be remotely scary if played as an RP scenario. It's been mentioned before that something like Slender Man works best when you see him very little and know nothing about him or his motives.
But as Ross mentioned, cinematic monsters don't work that way.
Also... I keep imagining Slender Man without a face, so I have problems imagining him approaching a camera with frustration. He has no features! ???
EDIT: Also-also, I just noticed the post about the Little Fears: Night of the Squashed Cat game, which in the synopsis says that it's based on several of the "Scary Stories" stories. I gotta hear this now.
-
Well our game sessions are 3 hours in length on average so by definition, it would not be a one shot if the game was 6 hours long. It would be a two shot.
-

Nothing wrong with that... :)
And when I say I wish they were longer, it's definitely not a criticism. This was an enthralling AP, and I loved it. Thusly I wish there was even more of it.
And @seejo, I like the idea of the one-shot AP's as a "showcase". Makes a good amount of sense.
-
the main reason our sessions are 3 hours in length is that Tom works and he gets tired so he can't stay up very late :-[ :'( :'(

The moral of this story, Kroack, is if you're a dick on the boards, I'll be a dick back.

Bullocks! Your dickery standards are quite low, sir!
Preposterous poppycock if I do say so myself.

Did you listen to it? It's really old and we sucked as RP'ers in that game for Ross. I think what I remember most is Jason saying, "I'm going to go get my bat!" Good times.

I said this in the comments of the AP, but if the goblins get their hands on Lemurian artifacts, they're going to be one step closer to being the space pirates from Metroid. They already keep keep a bunch of things that should not be kept as pets as pets, they willingly (sometimes needlessly) sacrifice themselve for the gourp, and they're pretty much made up of scum and villany. And now they have access to technology way beyond ttheir ability to use, which they will try to use anyway in the name of SCIENCE!
"The uses for Lemurian technology is endless!"

what chapter is that from?
Mangareader's Chapter 16 page 19:
http://www.mangareader.net/96-1136-19/berserk/chapter-16.html
It was a great story arc.
I think their 'chapters' are actually each volume. 'Cause each one is, like, 200+ pages. Then later, it skips from, like, chapter 38 to 210 or something crazy like that (probably due to not having a full volume out yet, so they split it up into the actual chapters). That's what I believe >.>;;;
Or it might be chapters. Never really looked too much into it.
On a related note, methinks Guts will forever be my favorite bad-ass.

What is the plan for the AP podcast, El Rosso Paytono? Will you continue to post D&D every other week? Will we finish The New World campaign and then move on to Dark Sun?

Although, you can't really blame food for being that way. Food is just the puppet for the Agricultural Radical Movement, that seeks to end freedoms as we know it and unite all of the world under its view of a one-world government. Nobody can escape the long law of the ARM.

Oh, and I loved this AP when I listened to it as part of the Ransom six or so months ago *cough*. Not implying anything by that statement.
Seriously, it was cool to hear Bill GM and Ross play. Interesting shift in dynamics, especially with Bill having such command over the material. How much of the scenario was part of the DRYH backstory and how much of it was homebrew?

I wish Bill would come back to the NWC games, I think Ross mentioned he comes back for the last few episodes or so. Also, he should definitely join the Dark Sun campaign.

True story: I'm usually pretty terribad at getting motivated for game prep, so DRYH was largely off the cuff interpretation of the stuff in the book. In the second DRYH AP, I do some liberal stealing from Dark City and Neverwhere. Also, there's a tandem bicycle race IIRC.

Ross plays Sarkis exactly how I imagined Sarkis when I created him.
-
It's amazing how quickly people will cast aside thier goals and beliefs when somebody acts polite and pretends to empathize with them. Sarkis really shows the evil that can lurk in seemingly moderate, centrist viewpoints.
-
It's amazing how quickly people will cast aside thier goals and beliefs when somebody acts polite and pretends to empathize with them. Sarkis really shows the evil that can lurk in seemingly moderate, centrist viewpoints.
Sarkis isn't evil. In fact, his policies would probably have been much better for the colony than those of the players.
-
Well, after the Crown exterminated those who supported the Water Barons and re-established a firm choke-hold on the colonies. Then, yeah, I suppose from a purely utilitarian standpoint, re-integrating with the kingdom would have been better for the colonies.
Sarkis himself isn't evil, but the fact that he willingly supports a corrupt, inept regime (which the Cortez debacle conclusively demonstrated of the Crown) does little to help his cause.
-
Well, after the Crown exterminated those who supported the Water Barons and re-established a firm choke-hold on the colonies. Then, yeah, I suppose from a purely utilitarian standpoint, re-integrating with the kingdom would have been better for the colonies.
His philosophy isn't actually a utilitarian one or, rather, it is but not in a post-Locke, post-JS Mill understanding of utilitarianism. Sarkis actually practices pure altruism, but the price that he expects for his altruism is devotion to the causes that he believes in. For instance, by providing loans with no interest for the good of building the colony, Sarkis seeks to benefit all parties in the transaction, even if he himself profits from it. He actually proposes an alternative society, and extremely just society, to the Hobbesian-liberal and pseudo-capitalistic society proposed by the players. The question becomes what lengths will an individual go to for a fair and just society? And is such a society preferable to the reality the players would impose on the colony? Would an individual genuflect to petty tyranny that benefited themselves and others or would an individual attempt to assert his or her own personal "rights and freedoms" in imposing their own tyrannical rule over others. As Sarkis explains to the players in the meeting, the choice they have given the colonists is actually a false choice that could be more tyrannical than the rule of the king, particularly a rule that could be mitigated through Sarkis and his advisors.
-
Well, it's certainly no secret that the players had not developed much of a post-revolution plan beyond free elections. I personally have no idea what they desire except self-determination, free from the Crown's influence. But the whole "PCs imposing thier tyrannical views on the colonists" arguement is moot - doesn't the Crown impose its "tyrannical views" on citizens the moment they are born? Sure, the PCs basically took the fate of the colonies into thier hands and single-handedly determined its future direction. That's not really up for debate. But I doubt one can objectively state that the Crown's claim to Divine Right is any more "legitimate" or "moral" than the PC's decision to begin a revolution.
I don't have a firm backing in philosophy, but practicing charity and expecting payment in return, whether in the form of future favors or devotion or influence or whatever, does not really fit any definition of "charity" or "altruism" I have seen. These seem to be purely self-motivated gestures on Sarkis' part to increase his sphere of influence and soften his public image.
The obvious ineptitude of the Old World has yet to be addressed. Allowing a crazed, would-be tyrant and ex-Pelorite to ally himself with aberrant monstrosities and demons and trounce through thier colonies roughshod is, quite frankly, inexcusable. If the Crown cannot prevent that, or at least offer more than nominal assistance to its colonies, then the Old World is one good gnoll or giant invasion away from collapsing in on itself.
-

While this is all true, I definitely found myself coming down against the group during this episode. I was sitting there amazed at the lack of action on anyone's part. I wonder how different that would have gone if Locke was present. I bet he would have sided with Lowcrag and SOMETHING would have been done.
-

It's naive to assume that there is any form of charity or altruism that isn't self-serving.
In a liberal, capitalistic society, charity serves to redirect questions on how people accumulate so much wealth in the first place. George Soros, for instance, can give a one hundred million dollars to a charity that supports a third world peoples and people applaud it without bothering to learn that Soros originally made the one hundred million dollars off the very same people in the third world country. (And, in reality, Soros' microloans program is really more insidious than that but he's been hailed as altruistic because of it.)
The alternative version of society that Sarkis' envisions was one that didn't work on usury or monopolistic control of goods and services, including legal services. As such, his vision for the colony was close to Tom's initial vision of the colony just Sarkis has the cult of personality and sphere of influence to bring about such a vision.
The only really thing that set Sarkis and the players apart at the meeting was the players were operating on a firm, if unfounded, narcissism that they were the only ones that could stop Thrasdun (player logic). Also, I was quite disheartened at the players' utter disregard for the population of the colony whom they claimed to be liberating, but were instead endangering and impoverishing. While we might celebrate a player victory, would Lowcrag really be the best leader for the colony's people, especially when he has already claimed that the ideal society operates only on strength and violence?

Having met some of you in the past I can actually identify some people but I can't see Aaron. Is he the guy who never faces the camera? I'm assuming the dude with glasses and a green shirt is Caleb.
Also I think he's cool that Ross appears to be gaming in his socks.

No reason what so ever, that's why I think it's cool. I am, however, saddened at the loss of the wacky drug dealer.

hahaha sorry dude.
You're in that game, then? Fuckin' awesome.

Well if that's Arje than I think I've got everybody down. It took me a moment to recognise Jason without his super jew shirt.
I am kind of bummed that Ross's gaming room is bigger than mine.

You should see my currently not being used gaming room then. I'll send you a picture of it doubling as the Thanksgiving dining room.

When we bought a house I made sure to stake out a room for the purposes of gaming. So, I ended up with the only side room available. It works... it's just not as big as Ross's.

What, Ross - no blackface when Caleb is running the game?
-
I updated the menus and posted Andrew's Fortune part 2 :o
Let me know what you think of the changes on the site
-
Didn't see much of a difference. But then I was a little distracted by shinny new AP.
-
changes are subtle - the listings at the top reflect the genres and systems more completely plus added an about page
-
Oh hey, there's little drop down menus. Cool, I see it now. I like.
-
2. aaron wasn't there
Yeah, sorry about that guys. I had just started overnight hours for my new job and my sleep schedule was somewhat thrown into chaos. Hopefully I should be able to correct that shortly and return to the normal Friday night games.
-

Looks shiny.
Might not be a bad idea to have a "cast list" at some point.
-
MORE NEW WORLD, MORE VIGNETTES BLUHBLUH
Conclusion of Andrew's Fortune is insanely awesome, though.
-
The scene in the precinct culminating in Andrew's "escape" is the best, most perfect example of a 'PC plan' I've ever seen.
-
I like how Cody gibed about the game getting kind of gay when RJ was acting out talking to the lab tech, but like an hour later he kissed RJ's character straight-up mouthstyle.
-
why doesn't part 2 have more comments :'(
-
BTW really enjoyed the Pantheon game.
I was amused at how epic you guys made it - seemed like the designers expected people to go with more basic mythology tales, rather than the "I seed the universe with life" route you guys took. Still a damn fun listen.
-
Every Pantheon game we played spun way out of control, the scoring system, and the designers intentions. It's too bad that the epic monster game destroying Tokyo wasn't recorded. I forget what type of monster everyone had, but I had a giant platypus that fired radioactive eggs.
-
Dammit all, RPPR Crew. Twelve-Ounce Mouse was fucking amazing. It was made by one of the co-creators of Aqua Teen and featured an inebriated voice acting cast. I do agree with your analyses of Home Movies and Tim and Eric, though.

hahah is that in pantheon or new world 34?

New World 34, either during or following the first encounter.

Had an 18 hour journey to Aberdeen last week, and a 14 hour journey back again last night/this morning. Can I just praise an old set of APs, the U-boat Heurse and Dig to Victory once more. The variety of different things in them makes them perfect for travelling and keeping my interest, and the quality of the history, player RP, senario, GMing and the way the groups bounce off each other still make them fantastic.
Anyway, 2011 will be the year of catching up with all the new stuff, but nice to end 2010 with these sterling entires again.

I disagree with you sir. While Aqua Teen and Squid Billies were great, 12 oz. Mouse was far from as amusing as the other two.
I don't quite remember their opinions on Home Movies and Tim and Eric, I only know I enjoyed Coach McGurk (only cause of John Benjamin), otherwise i hate both shows.

Why's Tom and Aaron gotta be such bitches to the new guy in the new Cthulhu game? Tom was trying to do his best Nelson Van Alden impression, and Aaron tried to lock him in the cell for literally no reason after he hadn't had a chance to do anything for like three hours.
I was kind of hoping he would strangle Aaron through the bars.

Well (in character) Tom's indifference to Davids gangster was mostly professional. My character was a pompous ass who saw it fit to leave the convict where he belonged. Besides, David is a close friend of Tom and myself, so it's written in our contract to give each other as much grief as possible. ;D

At what point in the current cycle would the Wild Talents game begin being posted, after the New World episodes have been posted in their entirety?
Because if so New World. :D I wanna hear some superheroes!
Otherwise, Eclipse Phase would be interesting, I've been looking at the system in between writing things for my Wild Talents campaign and it looks pretty neat.

So I just got to the point during the Eclipse Phase AP where it's mentioned that Caleb has a Delta Green one-shot to run. Did that ever get played?
-
We're halfway through it. We started late so we had to shut it down right as they were really starting to get a bead on what was going on. I think the plan is to finish is sometime next week. Whenever it is posted, the scenario will be called "Lover in the Ice."

So I listened to Sucrose Park Gaiden again. In the monster fight at the end, you guys aren't using the Monsters rules anymore. What all rules did you mash up for that session?

Uh - I think I was? I used threats pretty liberally.

Uh - I think I was? I used threats pretty liberally.
I just heard a lot of non-monsters skills (such as "might" and "influence") being referred to in the final fight. It sounded un-monster-y.

I think that has something to do with the Reign faction system they where using.

Nice work Aaron! I think you did admirably. I've read the Haunting, and you stuck to what they gave you, which is all I think can be asked of you for your first game. I know this was from a long time ago and you've done great stuff since then too.
Ross, you're one of those kind of teachers that punches a guy in the face and then asks him what he learned (Kung Fu styl-ee). But I guess everyone gets something out of that! Caleb must have been "WTF!" I'm glad he stuck around though!
-
Oh Aaron, that might be my worst picture ever, but you managed to salvage it!

Unspeakable has an AP podcast as well - and guess who is providing episodes for it :D http://theunspeakableoath.com/home/?p=779

I also note they appear to be asking for volunteers with possible actual play recordings. Looks like a good chance for some Community AP guys to get a larger share of the internet.

The community APs are some damn fine recordings with some damn fine groups!

My thoughts exactly. So, some of them should contact the Oath about being used as Unspeakable Oath Actual Plays.

Oh man I can't wait for the last NWC AP. I hope it gets posted soon, but I understand if the Ruins of Lemuria isn't completely finished yet then it might have to wait.
Also, since the APs were delayed by a week, maybe we could get two APs posted this week or perhaps a double-session AP? That would be great.

bam
double length dark sun to make up for the slow posting cycle

So, kind of a random bit here, but anyway...
Listened to the Daybreaker-inspired AP and I loved the ideas behind it. Just checked out the movie earlier tonight and loved it. Thanks for the great game and turning me onto a great movie...
-
So I listened to one of your actual play podcast today at work today. The one about the little orphan kids and Candlewick (you were at gen con i believe). I would just liek to say that it was very entertaining to listen to.
-
welp im dum. Finally got around to encoding and posting the actual conclusion for Tom's GURPS league game.
Enjoy!

Wow. That..uh. that makes a lot more sense.

For the last few months I've thought you guys never finished this game! There first three where originally put up in one of the random rewards and it just ends.

All right, I've sped up the release cycle a bit and posted double length episodes of the two ongoing campaigns. How are you guys holding up? Have you been able to listen through all of the episodes yet? Should I keep packing two episodes together? Be honest - I want to format RPPR to best suit the listeners but I need to know how you listen to the show and what length works best for you.
-
So far I'm half way through No Evil. I'll probably finish it by Wednesday or Thursday, depending on if I drive to the library tomorrow.
I'm liking this schedule. Double episodes are great! Especially for the ongoing campaigns otherwise they take up too many slots.
If I do finish the episodes before you post more I just sample things from the community site.
-
I got the Eclipse Phase AP a day ago, and I've already listened to it in it's entirety. However, I constantly had to skip back on the Wild Talents game and it took me about a week to listen to it completely.
Of course, that's more because of personal taste since I like sci-fi more than superhero stories.
In my opinion, a two-per-week posting cycle is great and not overwhelming at all. In fact, even if the posting cycle went even further, it would be nice to pick and choose the APs that I would like to hear the most and listen to the rest as a backlog. That's basically what I do when I get the APs for donating to the Kickstarters, and it's a great feeling to have more APs than I can listen.
-

I am an AP devouring monster, so more episodes with double length campaign stuff is excellent. I generally manage to re-listen to the newest episode (if not a double-length) at least twice before the next is posted.
-
It takes me forever to listen to Eclipse Phase stuff because I find it REALLY HARD to follow sometimes. I enjoy the setting a lot, but goddamn it's weird.
I personally find the 5 hour episodes to be a little overwhelming. I like the volume of content being posted, but the sheer length makes it hard to scrub through if I want to resume on another device.

I find Eclipse phase pretty hard to follow also. I have to set time aside to listen to it when i can concentrate on what's being said else i get completely lost. Its a good setting and I have enjoyed the eps, its just not for the faint of heart.
-
I, too , occasionally have problems finding the time at which I left off because of how long the episodes are.
Maybe instead of posting one double-length episode, for Eclipse Phase for example, you could spread them out and post them during the course of the week.
Maybe post the first session of the game on Monday, then the second session on Thursday, instead of splicing the two up in the same file.
-
Don't listen to these crazy people! Double length episodes for the win.
Of course, I listen to all my APs on my MP3 player which automatically remembers the point at which I was last listening to the file so that I don't have to fast forward or rewind to find it. If I had to do that with a five hour AP I'd probably be annoyed too.
-
Team Double Length FTW!
I don't find it hard to follow, but then again I'm pretty familiar with the source material and the lexicon.
I drag my computer into the car with me to listen to the APs. but before the episodes were synched with my mp3 player.
Try writing down time codes down or just listening to it again? The problem I see with double posting the same campaign is that when someone looks at the front page they just see a whole bunch of one thing, and they might be tempted to think "Gee these people play Eclipse Phase twice as often as wild talents." Or "How come there are only two episodes of Andrews Fortune? When Eclipse phase has four!"
tldr; DOUBLE LENGTH.
-
I feel the need to mention that Eclipse Phase, in spite of being murky at times, is a far more interesting setting than Wild Talents. Superheroes are dumb fun, but EP brings some up seriously thought-provoking questions about transhumanism, gender identity, and the meaning of consciousness even with some internet yahoos playing it.
so i ain't just dumb, yall

Agreed. The superheros are a lot of fun and the game style makes those sessions go quickly. That said, with the way Ross runs games, single length WT episodes are fine because it doesn't leave a cliff-hanger in the middle of the scenario. The EP games ought to be double-length so they can be cohesive.

Superheroes are widely accept (nowadays) while Transhumanism and other such subjects covered by Eclipse Phase are rarely known to the populous. Superheroes are just easier to get if you are coming from Average Joe on the street. It's difficult to explain Transhumanism to some people, trust me I've had people get confused with Dystopian stuff let alone having to explaining some of the Transhuman concepts.

It's not the concepts. It's the simple fact that so many different things are possible to happen in an Eclipse Phase game. If you miss the crucial sentence where the PC says he's hacking into the mesh and all of a sudden you're listening to an Alice in Wonderland nightmare romp, it's a little confusing.
These games just require some more focus.

Are there some facts to backup shorter episodes equal increased attention span?
Two three hour episodes seems about as easy to understand as one six hour episode.
And sometimes one episode just doesn't do it. I need the dosage to be upped.
OR A RANSOM FOR DIVINE FIRE so we can get some APs up in herr before xmas. I think this would please everyone. Or just post all the games with Tom in them and no others ever.
(My sister made the tea so all blame for this verbose post is on her head.)

I'm not sayin' the shorter episodes equal increased attention span, I'm saying that Ross-run WT games are MUCH more likely to be a contained adventure in a single-length episode, whereas a Caleb-run game usually spans several sessions, thus a double-length episode is required.
WT is also not so chock full of abstractions as Eclipse Phase can be.
-
Yep, I'd say we've learned well by this point Caleb is nearly incapable of running a game that lasts only a single session. I think Wage of Sin is the only thing he's done that didn't run over.
I consider that a positive quality. Makes scheduling more difficult I imagine.

Don't forget Think Before Asking. It was pretty long, clocking at 4:18, but it was a single session. It did a pretty complete picture, and nicely tied up most ends.
I agree that Caleb running two sessions isn't a bad thing since they turn out pretty epic, but I would say that his mental timeframe for the sessions is about 4 hours, while most of the RPPR crew sees a normal session running for 2 and a half or three hours. Again, not a bad thing since it lets Caleb prepare even more for the next session while keeping some of the unused content of the session.

A point, but Think Before Asking involved only two PCs. Things get done a lot faster when there's that few players.
And I agree about your second point. It'll be interesting to see how that lays out in a campaign.
-
I wasn't sure about where Think Before Asking fit into the situation since it was a pre-made adventure rather than one Caleb created on his own.
It does lend credit to the idea that two PCs makes for a faster game since Think Before Asking and Wages of Sin where both only two players.

From what I can tell, Caleb's adventures run long because he has fully-realized personalities for every single NPC he creates. His games are a lot more roleplaying-intensive as a result, and so take longer.
When Ross runs games, they're like great television. Self-contained but episodic, with a balance between character development and plot, with pacing as tight as can possibly be.
When Caleb runs games, they're like a great novel. In-depth characters, highly detailed world-building, plot that involves layers of motivations and machinations, with a climactic pacing.
Both are awesome, just different.
-
Fittingly enough one makes sense for a media director and the other makes sense for an English major.
-
It's a genre thing too - Caleb pretty much only runs mysteries. I run a variety of genres but favor action/sand box style games.
-
So, are we getting a new episode of the Heroes of New Arcadia today?
-
i got a four day weekend and i don't know what to do at the beach other than listen to rppr
-
sorry about the delay - experimenting with advertising on rppr and there was some technical issues to deal with. Gonna upload a CoC game tonight.

Fortunately for us, the impersonator will be Cody. ;D

It listened to the podcast, got your address from two years ago, and then moved in on you...
Not sure how well this timeline works out, but it's my theory...
-
That hot chick who gave you her number? She was the advertisement in disguise.
-
and then jon was an advertisement

You seem to have interrupted my advert podcast pretty quickly with some form of discussion show. Did the RPG companies pay you to do that? You guys have changed, man!

Don't sign up for audible for me. Sign up if you think the service is worth the cost.
IF you want to support me BUY MY BOOK and I'll have a ransom up this month.
-
I don't have to buy your book; the credit ArcDream gave me for walking a dozen nerds through a game of self-destructive "superheroes" paid for your book.
Ransom, on the other hand, catches my attention.
-
working on the ransom - i'll record the video narration soon and then post the actual kickstarter soon.
What do you think of these rewards?
Kickstarter rewards
$1: Vote: A vote on the subtitle for Killsplosion.
$10: Vote and playtester: A vote on the subtitle for Killsplosion. Access to playtest rules and seat at 1 mass Skype PvP game, acknowledged in credits
$20: Preview episodes and vote: 10 preview AP episodes and A vote on the subtitle for Killsplosion.
$25: Preview and playtester: a vote, 10 preview AP episodes, playtest rules and seat at mass Skype PvP game, acknowledged in credits
$50: Preview, playtest and Online Game: All of the above plus a seat at one of three ORE games I plan to run over Skype.
$100: Control RPPR AP for a week! Dictate what the next AP posted to the RPPR AP Podcast site will be and all of the earlier awards.
$200: Control RPPR for a game! I will run a game of your choice for the RPPR group. You can join in over Skype/webcam if you want. I will NOT run FATAL nor will I run a game I can’t get. I will buy a new rulebook if necessary.
-
I think we're going to get you your fucking video camera for some goddamned Star Trek action, is what I think.
Count me in for the kickstarter. ;D
So for the ORE skype games - I'm guessing Wild Talents, Monsters, and Killsplosion?
-
I am setting the baseline for this ransom at $1,250. If the funding meets this level, I will create the base rules for Killsplosion, playtest them and then release a final PDF. However, there are several secondary goals. If this Kickstarter hits these levels I will release additional content for everyone. They are:
$1500 – I will create an audio commentary for Killsplosion and upload a designer’s edition of the PDF with the audio embedded inside the PDF.
$2000 – A Killsplosion expansion: Zombies vs. Humans. Play as an intelligent zombie or human survivor in a post-apocalyptic battle royale! New rules for scavenging random weapons, zombification, insanity and splatterpunk combat. Gain bonuses for gory stunts!
$2500 –We will get a HD video camera and use it for future RPPR productions such as:
The RPPR group playing Artemis Spaceship Simulator in costume!
Interviews and panel recordings at gaming conventions!
Short films and readings of fanfiction!
And more!
$5,000 – A live action Killsplosion one shot video: Revenge of the Killer Assassin – a live action short featuring blood, bullets and explosions!
$10,000 a live action Killsplosion web series with real explosions, decapitations and copious amounts of gratuitous violence! A minimum of 5 episodes with plot, characters dialogue - the whole shebang!
-
ORE games - MAOCT, Nemesis, WT and a Dirty World.
Killsplosion will NOT be ORE.
-
Does the $200 contributer get to write up a scenario for the group to play?
I would sit in on that to just listen.

yeah if that's what you want.
Also I am currently picking the APs for the ransom
I have a 6 session World of Darkness hunter/changeling mini campaign based on Slenderman. Fizzled out after the last game so no resolution BUT there's 6 sessions of WoD stuff.
Delta Green: Victim of the Art
Caleb's Berlin Dirty World scenario playtest
Bill's second Don't Rest Your Head game
still looking through to pick the last game. Probably gonna be the 4 hour Eclipse Phase one shot I ran recently.

Pledged, damn you Ross Payton and your gaming crack!
-
Dudes, we're already 6.1% to having a 90-minute web series!
...Oh, and we're 48.4% to the regular old goal of a new game too. After less than 24 hours. Not too bad, I'd say.
-
I haven't even posted the obligatory RPPR episode promoting it yet!
:D :D :D
I really hope we get at least to $2500. Kevin Siembedia is coming to Visioncon next year. A video interview with him will be awesome.

I do love me some APs. Added my donation to the total.

I heard a rumor he runs the Bell Island one, is that his so called stinker or did the stinker get canned?
-
this is the stinker

The reward AP episodes were posted 24 hours before I have to make a roadtrip to Florida, forcibly packed into a car full of college sorostitutes. I didn't know what I was going to do.
Ross Payton, you're my hero.

Trippy shit. My mind is in a post-blow state.
-
That third panel's kinda weird considering the tone of the othe two panels. I can still see it when I go to sleep.
-
chainsawsuit is actually written by the guy that originally wrote the canlde cove story. Also yesterday there was a comic there, today three panels with static in them.
-
Good ol' Candle Cove, I used to love that show.

has anyone had a chance to listen to any of the ransom APs yet? any particular hits or misses in that batch?

Caleb's Dirty World game was awesome, A++.
The Delta Green Game is okay, pacing's kinda weird.
Listened to the first Slenderman game and I'm already really sad that the campaign died.
-
From what I've listened to so far:
- Caleb's Dirty World game was absolutely amazing. Everyone playing was great, but special mention has to go to Thad. Worth contributing to the Kickstarter all by itself. ;D
- The Bell Island playtest was an entertaining listen, but the scenario was definitely still in it's early stages. Especially apparent with the later(?) versions of Bell Island that have already been posted. :-\
- Delta Green was a definite hit. Caleb was great, and hacking Facebook ftw.
- Don't Rest Your Head was hilarious. :D I am stealing Ross' madness talent, it was perfect. I'd definitely be interested hearing more games of DRYH. Curious what the RPPR crew thinks of the game, having played it a couple times now.
- I've only listened to the first World of Darkness game so far, but the campaign idea is intriguing. ???
-
Having listened to the Dirty World AP I now have to ask how the Gencon playthroughs went. Did a trend develop in which character goals were accomplished?
Delta Green was good, I found the ending just petering out rather appropriate. Sometimes things don't wrap up neatly.

I know my character's goals were kind of maybe accomplished. I played Lt. Whatisname, not in the AP, an undercover OSS agent. Part of my goals were to not blow my cover but the other part involved bringing Herr Krueger back to the American side so we had a Nazi scientist.
I was not discovered, but didn't recover Krueger either.
It ended in a firefightcarchase between all the players. Americans Sgt. Durant and I vs the Ruskies and Hugo and Isolde came in behind to mop up. Both Russians died before getting their man across the border, and the Americans and the Germans parted ways never to speak of that day. ( To hear Caleb tell it, listen to RPPR episode 61)
-
Every time I see a new Eclipse Phase AP posted I shed a tear of joy. Goddamn these are awesome.
-
I really like that everyone hems and haws about possible plans and then ends up doing the insane, stupid plan anyway.
I'm not being sarcastic. This is exactly how you should make every decision.

which particular plan were you referring to? I think that session had several.

My short work week this week has been dragging it's ass, finishing up this EP AP is exactly what I need to push the day forward.
-

mostly the decision to cloud-dive onto the secret base while filming it

I just loved how ultimately unnecessary it was. Fucking amazing.
-
It's probably too late for Caleb to use this to screw with you guys since you've left Venus but I'd like to point out that since you disabled the final slitheroid (the one that fell down the elevator shaft, Aaron hit him with a concussion seeker) rather than totally destroying it (I don't think anybody knifed the guy after he stopped moving), it's cyberbrain was still in operation. Even if you removed it's stack if you didn't wreck the sleeve completely to shut down the cyberbrain than the ego was just chilling immobile.

That's what I'm sayin! I'm really excited to see Artemis Spaceship Simulator and Captain Tom of the USS RPPR NCC-1701. (If they don't come up with a better name than that for their ship)
Weee! And video interviews! Then again, there might be some ungodly waits for editing and whatnot. RPPR needs an intern.

So did you guys ever do that Warhammer 40K game you had mentioned a few months ago?
If so, how did you all like the system? I've been reading over the Free RPG Day modules and they look fairly fun.

This was the best video ever.
-
That was teh awesome! Absolutely loved it.
On a side note, I think you all need to change bodies. I'm pretty sure that in my head Tom looks like Thad, Ross looks like Tom and Aaron... looks like the creature from the end of the movie :P No, Aaron was actually spot on. But that's what happens when you get to know someone only from audio podcasts! It's weird to watch, but I'm glad to put faces to people. Now to see if Cody really looks like Shia LaBeouf and if Caleb really looks like Seth Rogen.
Keep up the great videos! Ross, you continue to be the man.
-
Well, thank you for the awesome intro video! Also I am a horrible deformed monster that burns in the light of day.
-
Now everyone can see half what those of us who attend GenCon have to endure.
My wife said Aaron is cute and Thad should be playing movie roles normally played by token English people. There was no comment regarding Tom or the mysterious camera man.
Good to know the camera works. If that was the camera mike then it gets pretty good sound quality too, didn't hear any whining noise from the camera itself and even the screaming didn't cause significant feedback.
-
Indeed, Bravo Sir!
I would like to re-iterate my comment that I would also like to bone Thad, but I am saving myself for Cody.
-
Need more CoC.
-
I agree that not everyone looked exactly as my mental image depicted them, except Thad, and maybe Aaron. Certainly unconventional means of running a game though.
-
I don't know where else to post this but, could you have a AP of spycraft?
-
There is a thread for this here (http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?topic=1526.0), but I definitely agree with the suggestion.
-
Hey, new to the forums so I'm not exactly sure if there's a better place for this, but on the website it doesn't show any DnD episodes before the 14th. Is there anywhere else I should be looking, or am I out of luck?
-
For all your Actual Play needs, turn to Role Playing Public Radio. (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/the-new-world-free-4e-dd-campaign-setting/)
Not easy to find if you don't know what you're looking for, and you wouldn't know if you haven't been listening long that some of the APs were on the main podcast site before the AP site existed. Enjoy!
-
As you may know, all of the RPPR sites are hosted on bluehost. With my Kickstarter money, I upgraded my account from basic to pro - which should improve the speed of the site as we used to get CPU and download throttled all the time due to restrictions placed on the basic hosting level.
-
You mean I won't have to deal with getting 56 k/s when downloading APs on the first day anymore? Glory be!

For those of us who are nuts and jump onto the things as soon as you post them. I was overjoyed when the bonus AP from the Kickstarter downloaded at a reasonable rate.

I have been five minutes late to work on more than one occasion for having waited 45 minutes for one of the APs to download in the morning, meanwhile I'm downloading LP videos that are two or three times as big and they take 7-8 minutes. You guys are worth the dirty look from my backup supervisor, so no worries there, but it'll be nice for them to download a little bit faster.

I just did something I've not done for a game before: write a post mortem explaining a bit behind it. In this case, I wrote up what went into my one shot of Hotline Miami http://www.slangdesign.com/2012/12/blog/post-mortem-of-call-of-cthulhu-hotline-miami/

So I've posted a few episodes since the hosting upgrade - has it been faster for anyone? Is there a noticeable difference in speed?

Just downloaded your new episode (82). It took a bit over half an hour to downlode the 58MB trough iTunes.
-
I definitely noticed the increase through the main site. Downloaded the new episode in about three minutes. Thumbs up.
-
Before I upgraded the hosting we would constantly get dinged for CPU throttling - essentially all the various RPPR sites were hogging too much of the server's CPU so we were limited to how many CPU cycles we could get.
Now with the pro hosting, I haven't seen any CPU throttling when I check the backend.
Here's our bandwidth usage for the last 7 days:

Hey Ross,
Sorry to bother you, I know you've been away from them for a while, but I'm newer to the group and just decided to go back and listen to the New World campaign, and the blubrrry audio widget isn't coming up for Episode 3. Do you have a mirror or it archived on another site? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check your browser - it works for me - maybe try another browser or a different computer? Regardless, you can download a lot of them from here http://archive.org/details/RolePlayingPublicRadioActualPlayPodcast
-
Is anyone else having a problem seeing the episode images on the Actual Play feed? I can see images on the regular podcast site but I haven't been able to see, for example, the images of the Know Evil characters. This hasn't cropped up anywhere else.

They show up fine to me - have you tried different browsers and different computers?
Imgur can access the images fine - here's Fei Yen which imgur copied using the URL of the image on the AP site http://imgur.com/uCKf2kS
-
I can see the image just fine on Imgur, I'll have to check again on my work computer on the AP site. As for browser, I use Firefox. It's the weirdest thing, I can even see the image location on the page source but nothing shows up for me.

changed the menus on the AP site a bit and added a new page http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/the-best-of-rppr-actual-play/

Every single one of these top ten games feature Ross. Four of them are even run by him! The bias involved here sickens me...

So I have an idea to (partially) satiate the desires of hardcore AP fans: RPPR B Sides. I can create sets of themed APs that I have not posted to the main site and then make them available for a price - but if you can't pay, you can wait a year and I will post them on the site. Each B Side will have some new content to go along with it as well - a 'GM's commentary' podcast, PDFs of character sheets - any typed notes I may have and so forth.
What interest would you have in the following themes of APs? Figure around 5-10 episodes per B Side
Con games: The largest group of unreleased APs by far - I record every game I run at cons but I seldom post them to the site, so they've built up. I would discuss con games with Tom as a bonus podcast. Hand outs and pregen characters on PDF will also be made available. Because the audio isn't as good as normal games, I would put in more episodes, like 15 or so.
D&D miscellaneous adventures: I've played in numerous D&D games run by Bill, Dan, and Matt, usually with a different set of players than the RPPR crew. They're incomplete campaigns for the most part, but I had fun with them. I could talk about running or playing dungeon crawl scenarios as a bonus podcast or read excerpts from the Eye of Argon or something like that.
Horror/Slenderman/Night Floors: I have at least 4 con games of the night floors that are unposted, plus a skype game of the Fear Itself Slenderman game, and possibly some others. Bonus podcast will be a discussion on running Carcosa themed games.
Grab bag: so far I've found an unreleased Road Trip playtest scenario, Tom's unfinished Mutants and Masterminds campaign, a TMNT one shot, some improv comedy skits, and an AP of Arkham Horror with Cody and Mike. I don't know how entertaining the audio AP of a board game would be, but Cody insisted I record it, so there.
I'll keep digging through the archives to see what else I haven't posted.
There's the also the possibility of making entire campaigns available before they're released publicly - Fortunes of War is 100% done and Tribes of Tokyo is already pretty far in. I know some of you, especially the ones who usually pay for the preview episodes, listen to episodes multiple times, but I'm afraid if I make the entire campaign available at once, you'll binge on it once and then drift away. Of course, Netflix doesn't seem to have a problem with making entire seasons of a show available at once.
I'd like to offer great new content as well as older material with the B Sides, so I'm open to suggestions for ideas for bonus content.
-
I would be willing to pay for APs, it's what I do during the Kickstarters anyways. However, it is sort of a double-edged blade when I listen to these APs, since that means that when they are posted on the AP site, I have nothing new to listen to for that week. For example, because this week the Fortunes of War episode was posted, I had nothing new to listen to so I just decided to listen to something else.
If possible, I'd like APs that are unlikely to get posted on the AP site. The Con games are a great example: they have lower audio quality so many of them might not be 'fit' for the AP site, but I'd still listen to them. The same could be said for some of the really old APs that ware unlikely to be posted when there is so much more new and more relevant content in the backlog.
-
I agree with Dom. Totally down with purchasing APs; unhappy that it leads to unhappy times later (like this week with the Iron Heroes game). Still gonna buy them if I can though.
-
Yeah, I thought that might be a reaction. Out of the first 3 I listed, which would you want to hear first?
-
Con games sound good.
Same reaction here, I will give you all the dollars but I know I'll regret it down the road. :-[
-
Con games would be good.
-
From an economic standpoint, it would be better if Ross hid all the premium content -- major campaigns -- behind a paywall and made all the "B-Sides" available for free. But this is counter-intuitive in the podcast economy where premium content is the only reason people are visiting the site anyway.
As a compromise, why not just leave all the premium content for free and never post the APs designated "B-Sides" on the free side? That way dedicated listeners would get first-listen access to the premium content and subscriber-only access to all of the content?
-
I like the sounds of the packages idea - certainly the con games and D&D one-shots sound cool, especially with the commentary/advice podcasts on the side and the handouts.
-
If I get a bunch of content early (as you are saying making Fortunes of War available before they go live) then when the week comes when the new content comes out to the dirty masses then I don't have anything to listen to. I already felt this when I backed one of the kickstarters and got a bunch of stuff early and then realized you were going to post it. I did not listen to the fortunes of war play I had access to early because of this.
Perhaps if it was just outside the normal stream of content (extras that will eventually go live as you noted) that would work but for me just getting a lump package of things that will eventually be in the normal stream does not work well. Others mileage may vary.
I actually find the con games not as great (with the exception of Mr Glancy's games - I think someone should just follow him with a microphone in his day to day interaction) since your are doing them in a large space with a lot of background noise and the audio quality suffers. I have no problem with non RPPR regulars being in/hosting games but if the situation is such the audio is compromised I tend to stop listening.
This may hopelessly date me as an old man not with the hot new business models but my personal feeling would be to create a subscription service (I know you already have a way to donate money but looking for something more formal). Being a 'member' may get me nothing more than to be 'ahead' on the streams some amount of time. Being a member might also just get me nothing but a pat on the back and a bumper sticker/tote bag although this of course will likely limit the people who sign up. A subscription service would create an actual revenue stream instead of step function payments which some people (including myself) believe to be better long term way to fund a business. It create incentives in the business to keep going as opposed to the temptation of taking all of one time cash and spending it on expensive cars/drugs/companionship (note I did not say that would necessarily be a waste of money). I also think it is easy when you have a lump sum to plan poorly so late in the game you realize you need more cash. You are seeing a number of Kickstarter projects having this same issue. With money coming in the door each month/quarter you need to plan better for today but tomorrow you have a revenue stream so your corrections might not have to be as dire.
All of the above being said I understand why a bundling model is much easier for you to do. You don't have to create a mechanism to gate release of content based on subscription status and track, maintain, and process subscription payments. If you bundle you just give a pre-vetted list of people a link to a place they can pull the files and they handle distribution. The model I want is a much higher technical investment so that might make it a non starter. I am sure services exists to help solve the technical problems but they will want some form of cut which then eats into the revenue and you end up having to buy the discount dollar store Cheerios not the fresh free range ones made by well paid and happy indigenous peoples of an underprivileged country that you buy at Whole Foods.
In the end I will likely buy some bundles as I am at a point in my life that I am happy to pay people for the content I enjoy even if I don't automatically pull down and listen to them. One of the aspects of the crowd sourcing movement that people use to talk a lot about but I have not heard much of recently is the idea of being a patron of something. I get some small amount of affirmation knowing that while I might have 'overpaid' for something I am supporting content/products I want to see in the world.
-
I would like content that would never make the main site. After backing baseraiders I found myself miffed when it lead to weeks of no RPPR later down the line.
So give me failed campaigns, playtests and one-shots that you probably wouldn't post at all and I'll give you a few dollars for it.
EDIT: answer to question. Con games first
-
1. All B Side material will eventually become free, but it will NOT replace regular episodes. I'll just dump a package of a B Side on a separate page a year or so later. This includes the bonus content. The page will include a message along the lines of "This bonus package of AP episodes was made available thanks to the donations of listeners like X" for anyone who bought the B Side.
2. B Side material will be material that would otherwise not be made available at all. First one will be a batch of con games.
3. What kind of bonus material would you be interested in?
A special podcast from me and/tom or caleb
A postcard mailed to you (with new art of course)?
An audio comedy skit - fanfiction readings, improv material, or a discussion of Phoenix Command's rules?
Something I haven't thought of?
-
I'd love to hear discussions of odd products like Phoenix Command or strange themes in gaming or podcasts that go back to some of the already explored podcasts.
Things that are too short for the normal podcast or too long and unfocused.
EDIT: Does anybody else feel like we're trying to convince a fastfood place to sell us their old fries? I just had this realization that I'm actually asking to pay for things that I dont't think would be good enough for the main stream listeners or stuff Ross was gonna just throw out. I think we might have a problem my fellow AP addicts.
Still want it though.

Ross and I were discussing how to differentiate between material earlier for what it's worth.

It's the difference between getting a ton of meth, and then going on a hiatus then right when the withdrawls are at their peak someone offers you meth cut with baking soda and you pay for it anyway.
XD
RPPR IS CRYSTAL METH!

I would've gone with "Rolling Bad".
Game idea: modern horror game were crystal meth is disguised as clear Game Science dice and distrubted openly at conventions.

You guys make an unbearable job where I have to make hundreds of decisions which run counter to my hard-held ethical beliefs every day doable. The podcasts give me something to look forward to when I'm doing my evil shit, ergo I am fine with a percentage of the income earned from that position going to you for extra content. If that makes me an addict, then I'm mainlining APs every day.
Looking forward to the day when I'm listening to this alongside something I like doing.
Extra podcasts would be dandy. The postcards are neat but they're hard to explain in my cubicle and they'd get lost at home.
-

Extra bonus podcasts, definitely fanfic readings (Cody will forever be the voice of Hans Von Hozel for me). Bonus raillery stuff, and you got a camera now, so maybe an occasional thing like Rifftrax's "Birdemic: Shock and Terror Players". Not sure I'd really need or want any physical goods.
I would say, leave them up for purchasing for a while, like 2 weeks to a month before theyre released for free anyway. It kinda sucks hearing about stuff that was a kickstarter bonus that I didn't get in on (due to having a shitty memory and forgetting to listen to stuff on time, or listening and intending to look at it but forgetting until later) until after its closed and not getting the bonus stuff until just before heat death with no second chance.

Maybe instead of old fries, you're buying the used fry oil for a biodiesel?

Volume 1 is up - it contains not just con games, but some home games with Cody. A lot of the con games are in quiet locations so they're easier to understand.

Also, anyone listen to all or most of the B-sides yet? Any thoughts on them?

I listened to two of the CoC APs: City under the Sea and Punitive Measures.
Really liked both, wished Punitive Measures was longer, it seemed a very interesting scenario
-
You could alleviate the "I didn't get my fix" factor by not having the B sides interrupt the normal posting schedule when they are made public. With that you don't have the gap in new content.
On general content - I really liked the debriefs of Know Evil & New Arcadia. I realize that requires a campaign of some sort, however the concept was intriguing. I would also be interested in throwing cash at a "classics" setup i.e. playing a bunch of old established scenarios - Tomb of horrors, etc. A series around designing an actual system might be interesting - design choices, themes, etc.
As a simple business curiosity, I'd be interested in seeing if you could create a standing DM and / or player service. Basically, an RPPR member on retainer for a group via web games or a one time Blood Bowl-esque gaming merc. It always seems to be a popular selection in the kickstarters. Entertain my curiosities please.

I'm just going to post all of the B-Sides episodes at once.
As for the DM/player for hire service, I'll put some thought into it once I shove Base Raiders out the door.
Does anyone speak German? Saw this referrer link and google translate makes it seem positive but I'd like a human translation of it: http://disinvictis.wordpress.com/2012/07/25/rppr-actual-play-podcast-cthulhu-invictus/

I was saddened too.

Sorry, I am a monster. I'll post some new content soon - got a Base Raiders game coming up next and then I can post Aaron's Call of Cthulhu game, The Beloved Dead.
-
An Aaron COC game! Is there running from prostitutes? Are the charecters Spy's whom immediately inform people they are such? Does any interaction with the poor people of a game world start with giving them money to help their station?
All kidding aside looking forward to the game. Always interested in seeing long time players in the GM chair and I did enjoy the Secrets of Nihm game.
-
Is this going to be an original Scenario from Aaron? like "Legacy of NIMH" or a module?
-
It is an original scenario (though it took a couple if tries to finalize). Sadly though it does not involve any 80's childrens movies or franchises this time.

Shouldn't it go "There are no cats in America! They're on the moon, it's made of Cheese!".
Also someone does need to make "An American Tail: Fifel Goes to the Dreamlands", right after "CSI: Rescue Rangers"

I presume CSI: Rescue Rangers is a Delta Green game?
Ducktales seems like a setting ripe for a COC mashup.

Is anyone else having issues with the iTunes Podcasts app and RPPR Actual Plays. The app isn't updating automatically anymore for RPPR Actual Plays. When I go and manually add the newest podcast from the store and it has the right date on it, but it goes to the bottom of the list. It's weird though, it just started doing this with one of the Nights Black Agents episodes and does it intermittently since. It just did again with the Bayou Beatdown Base Raiders episode. Anyone else having this problem
Or know of a fix. No other podcasts are doing it, and the main RPPR podcast isn't doing it.
Oh yeah one more thing, the episodes have the right date on them in the Podcasts store, but once they are downloaded they have a date of December 31st, 2000 on them.

I can't speak for the RPPR crew but if I remember correctly there is a Eclipse Phase campaign run by Ross, as well as the continuation to the Better Angels game run by Caleb.
-
Better Angels will go up next - the Eclipse Phase campaign won't go online until after I get back from China. In its place: more one shots and a Dungeon Worlds mini-campaign!
-
Oh, swankie. Dungeon world is something that has kind of been buzzing around at the edge of my perception. That will be a great chance to get a look at it.
One shots are ALWAYS welcome.
As is anything run by caleb.
That said, can't wait for eclise phase.
-
Is the Aaron built/run CoC scenario in the hopper at some point? Do the other RPPR regulars ever plan on running games, even one shots?
In general I like the one shots over the campaign myself. It is likely a flaw in my character but I find my interest sort of waning after five or six episodes. Even if the campaign is good (and I would argue most of the posted campaigns are) this still happens.

Yes, Aaron's game will be posted when I am in China. Gonna queue a bunch of games for you guys.
Our one shots tend to get more downloads than individual episodes of the campaign, but tons of listeners find us from our campaigns - we got a huge surge from the New World and Know Evil campaigns, for example.
-
Not saying you should change a single thing just noting my own preference. I was brought to the site after looking for Eclipse Phase APs to "see" the mechanics in action. Ended up liking Know Evil quite a bit and stuck around. I do listening to all of the podcasts but the campaign ones end up stacking up unlisteded to a bit longer than the one shot.

Got a podcast manager on my phone and am going to start working through a horrendously large backlog of games/campaigns I have been meaning to listen to (namely Know Evil). It is odd to think on how I have been listening so long and yet still fallen behind (but I guess that is life)....
-
I think RPPR is unusual for podcasts in that many of our listeners are very selective about which episodes they download - I know we have listeners that:
1. Listen to everything immediately (i.e. crawlkill)
2. Listen to most episodes but miss some stuff
3. Only listen to a particular genre or game system (only Call of Cthulhu)
4. Listen to one shots but skip campaigns
5. Only listen to a single campaign
and I'm sure I'm missing other listener groups.
-
I listen to goddamned everything, but I will sometimes not listen to an episode until a month afterward. I listened to Rick and Morty last week, but I'm just now hitting Part 3 of A Very Thorough Murder.
I'll usually save the last few episodes of a campaign for when I go on vacation, to have something interesting for the drive. Oneshots I'll usually listen to in my office.
I'm probably on the weird side though, since I listen so late and don't usually comment, I just don't feel I have something to contribute most of the time.

I'm a number 2.
I listen to most things. Probably two out of three actual plays. I skip some one shots that are in systems that don't interest me. I will also not start listening to campaigns until they are about 3-5 sessions in. If those episodes are good I may go back and listen to the first once. It's been my experience that the RPPR campaigns are a bit rocky for the first few sessions while the players and the GM are getting used to the system/world. Then once people have rapped their head around what they are doing the campaigns take of. The exceptions to that rule are Know Evil and the Tribes of Tokyo. With those the system interested me enough to listen from the start and they also happened to be games that had good first sessions.
I also find with the APs that games with drawn out or complex combat tend to work worse, as APs, then games with fast combat. So DnD is a bad AP game, Eclipse Phase and Wild Talents are medium for APs, while Night’s Black Agents and Cthulu are good for APs (As long as you don't slip into dog punching).
-
I am mostly in camp 2. I tend to work through one shots first and then follow campaigns. On campaigns I do tend to run hot or cold.
After listening to a number of APs I have come to the conclusion I am not a fan of the super hero genre in general and campaigns specifically although I did like the first tier of The Hero's of New Arcadia. On the other hand CoC and Eclipse Phase are always welcome. Know Evil was a great campaign and enjoyed Tribes of Tokyo and Iron Hero's quite a lot.
-
Number 2, though bordering on Number 1. At this point I'll listen to anything they toss out, I'm open to setting and systems. I like the style of "at the table" Actual Play RPPR rolls with. Reminds me of my own gaming group.
-

I have not listened to many other actual plays because often the audio quality is too terrible for me to hang on and I am lazy with only limited hours I can devote to listening to podcasts so get rid of things pretty quick. Given what I can only describe as 'we are doing it live' style that RPPR uses with basically no editing the product is actually pretty polished.
I am giving One Shot a chance right now but while I am enjoying it (their Feng Shui game is great) the 'need to do all the voices' part of the game grates on me a bit. The RPPR crew is similar to games I have been in or run, except of course the RPPR people play more than a dozen times a year, so it is more connected to my own gaming experiences.
-
I used to be Number 1 for a long while (2009-2012 I think) but I started becoming more of a Number 2 after a while. Mostly because of work and university leave me less time to dedicate to APs, but also because I just wasn't as invested in some of the games and campaigns being posted. Not to say they were bad or anything, RPPR puts out a lot of comedy gold, but for example I've never been a fan of the superhero genre and so I didn't get into Wild Talents and Base Raiders, to name a few. BUt on the contrary I love most of the other stuff including Call of Cthulhu, Eclipse Phase, GUMSHOE, ORE and The New World campaing/ D&D. I even loved The Spared and the Spoiled because it was less superheroes and more of a zany A Dirty World with demons.
I still listen to some things with a lot of enthusiasm. When Ross posted the Hedgerow AP I immediately dropped everything I was doing to start listening to it. And I have never missed a single episode of the main RPPR podcast, nor anything from Unspeakable podcast. So yeah, you guys are still the best podcast around. ;)
-
I listen first as a number 3 but I keep most of the APs I haven't listened to yet on my phone for when I get short on other podcasts so all in all I end up being a number 2.
-
So, I have an idea for a future RPPR project. Replays are basically novelized transcriptions of tabletop RPG sessions. They are very popular in Japan. Would any of you be interested in reading our actual plays instead of listening to them? Now keep in mind there is no way we can do this without charging for it in some way - I would have to hire out a transcription service. However, given that many people prefer reading to listening, I thought it might be worth asking. I could also add bits to the transcripts - asides from GM, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_role-playing_game#Replays
-
DO OUR OPINIONS MATTER NOW!?!? ;)
-
I've heard of something similar done for western RPGs, in that a lot of fantasy novels are actually adapted rewrites of D&D campaigns. I also got pretty excited when I heard that there was a fan translation for Red Dragon, a campaign where a bunch of Japanese anime writers are playing in and been turned to replays. Among the cast is Urobuchi, AKA Urobutcher AKA the guy behind Psycho-Pass and a bunch of other awesome light novels and anime.
So what I'm saying is, I would definitely be interested in such a project. Depending on the price range, I might even be tempted to spend a few money units for it. :P
-
I personally already have a backlog of reading to do and like the podcasts because I can listen when I am out walking or doing house chores.
How long are these things? Is a verbatim transcription or just the story elements? There is often a lot of talking over the top of each other and I think reading it would be chaos if it was straight transcription but editing it down to actually distill the story and content would be quite a bit of work.
So count me dubious. I might do one or two for the novelty but I don't see it hooking me long term.
-
As I said on the facebook thread, I don't think I'm much in the market for this, since I have way more listening-time than reading-time in my life right now.
THAT SAID: I could totally see myself paying for transcripts as a way to gather ideas for my own game. Some of Caleb's EP flavor elements from Know Evil or the plots from Tribes of Tokyo would be worth having in printed form so that I could incorporate them into my own games.
But as someone mentioned on Facebook, I'm not sure about possible IP legal problems. I know, for example, that Paizo has a somewhat complicated policy about what you can use their Golarion setting property for. Other companies might have similar-or-worse issues. You seem to be tight with Arc Dream and Posthuman Studios, so I imagine they'd probably be cool with things.
-
The first replays will be set in my next game, Ruin, so no worries about that.
-
The first replays will be set in my next game, Ruin, so no worries about that.
Ah, good call.
-
I think it is a potentially neat idea, but in order for me to probably get into it I think it would (as mentioned before) need to be somewhat heavily edited and pared down to the story. Things that I imagine would be somewhat obvious (taking out fillers words, finding a sensible way to deal with multiple people talking at once) and some maybe not so obvious (cleaning up grammar, cutting out table talk) would probably be necessary to make it readable. Because of all that, I'm not so sure I would appreciate a "transcript" take so much as using all that happened and what was said as the basis for just writing a fiction story based on the game. This would probably be really cool more specifically for one-shots (because they are essentially short stories) and maybe a few campaigns that have a strong story-arc.
All that said, while I think that product could be neat and would be the only way I would consume it (edited and somewhat retold), I speculate that I wouldn't actually get into it after all. The beauty of APs to me is that I don't have to read it and I like some of the riffing that happens along with good stories. So I might pay for an audio version of some of the games I really liked (imagining something of a reenactment with people voice acting parts, but that would be a MASSIVE project probably far beyond what you were considering), but probably not for a text version (though I totally understand why it wouldn't be released for free, with all the associated costs).
Hopefully that is some helpful feedback or things to consider (of course just all my opinions)....

Sean sent me the background info for his 5E one shot, the Dissidents of Darland
"Dissidents in Darlen
Background:
After a century of conflict, the war between the Dragonborn and Tiefling Empires may finally end. Bular Apala, the legendary “Sleeping Dragon” who captured Akra Daar—the commercial capital of Bael Turath—after a six year siege by feigning captivity, has become the agent of peace. The admiration and insight Apala gained during his captivity prompted him to be lenient towards the Tieflings in Akra Daar and he journeyed to the court of the Arkhosian Emperor to plea for an alliance with Bael Turath to create a powerful, jointly-governed grand imperium. His advice was ignored by Emperor Dractis II.
The cruel Emperor, paranoid and bent on the destruction of his enemy even at the cost of honor, ordered other commanders to execute all the inhabitants of Akra Daar and stripped Apala of his rank---a dark turn to events that left its mark on Apala. A few months after the Slaughter of Akra Daar, Apala gathered like-minded Generals and Officials to himself and launched a successful coup, exiling the Emperor and establishing the Arkhosian Republic. Shortly thereafter, the first democratic elections were held and Bular Apala was chosen as First Protector of the Republic. His first action was to contact the Tiefling Wizard, Melecheke, to call for a peace summit to end the war and draft a proposal for a Federated Imperium of the Seven Lands, to which the Imperial Senate of Bael Turath promptly agreed. The summit will take place in the neutral city of Verzai-Karno in one year.
Before Bular Apala can make the journey to the peace summit a year from now, however, his government must reestablish law and order in the Arkhosian Republic during the cease fire. Several paramilitary groups have sprung up in the first year of the Republic’s existence and there is daily violence on the streets of Darlen, the Republic’s capital, as these groups battle each other and threaten innocent civilians. Some seek to take the Bular’s revolution further, extending greater freedoms to the lower-ranking members of Arkhosian society. Some smaller bands of dissidents seek to establish a new Draconic racial state, expelling all non-reptilians from the new Republic…one way or another. The greatest current threat, however, comes from a branch of the military still loyal to the deposed Emperor. Intelligence suggests that a rogue Archgeneral, Gul Kahp, is gathering forces to launch a coup to put an end to Apala’s democratic reforms and establish a military junta with the deposed Emperor as a figurehead. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to locate Gul Kahp’s secret headquarters in Darlen and remove the threat he poses to the Republic by any means necessary.
Paramilitary groups:
1. KPD-Kobalds for Parity with Dragonborn. Kobalds were the proletarians of the Arkhosian Empire. Under Bular Apala’s Arkhosian Republic, they hope to gain greater social standing and more equality, but old classist enmities die hard. They frequently pick fights against ex-nobles, military officials, the police, merchants and anyone they view as perpetuating the oppression they have faced for years.
2. NS-Naga Skulls. The Naga Skulls are currently a small group, but they
definitely have left their mark on Darlen. They target non-Dragonborn for beatings on a regular basis and are particularly violent towards any who are not reptilian. Murders are frequently associated with this group and their racist rhetoric is routinely shouted on street corners. They call for the expulsion of all non-reptilians from the Arkhosian Republic and vow to remove the “corrupting influence” of “inferior races.”
3. The Free Company-Kahp’s paramilitants. Largely comprised of soldiers from battalions that were disbanded abruptly at the end of the Great War, this group ostensibly favors a return to Imperial rule. In reality, however, its leadership seeks to establish a military junta with the deposed Emperor as a figure-head. They plan to seize the capital of Darlen and place Apa under arrest. Once they have established their new regime, they intend to renew the war with the Tieflings and attain the victory they were deprived of by “liberal cowards” like Apala.
The Ruling Coalition:
1. The DVP-Dragonborn Virtue Party. Although bound up with the Revolution and supportive of the Republic, this group does not always espouse Apa’s views for equality. Comprised chiefly of industrialists and their supporters, this party forwards liberal thinking and republicanism for the sake of their pocketbooks. They want the violence quelled and would greatly appreciate a muzzle being placed on the KPD and its leadership, lest their Kobold workers get ideas of striking and collective bargaining in their tiny heads.
2. The SPD-Socialist Principled Dragonborn. This left-leaning party is commonly thought of as having instigated the Revolution, but in reality they were just very strong supporters. Tired of the decadence and oppression of a society that valued a militant aristocracy, the SPD sought a more liberal society with suffrage for all members of the Arkhosian Empire. They are ardent Republicans and seek equality for the Kobolds, but are unnerved by the violent tendencies of the KPD. They want social change through law, not further bloodshed.
3. The DDP-Dragonborn Democratists Party. This party comprises the left-leaning center. While they welcome change, they want it at a slow pace. Equality is not so much their goal as the extension of suffrage to a larger group. They detest the old nobles decadent lifestyles, but would never destroy them and prefer that a few of the titles remain intact for the sake of tradition. The middle-classes and women deserve the vote, in their opinion, but affording these opportunities to Lizardfolk or Kobolds would be a recipe for mob-rule. Not everyone is intelligent enough to vote in the interests of the Republic, after all.
4. The Center—This party is largely centered around a sizeable religious minority who does not recognize the State as the Defender of the Faith and prefers that the State stay out of religious affairs. The head of their Faith resides in the Ashen Isles, an autonomous area only nominally-claimed by the former Arkhosian Empire. Their vote swings left or right depending on what they see as more attuned to their religious views or as a threat to their religious community.
Persons of Interst:
1. Bular Apala
2. Gul Kahp
3. Enadrel Firedrake—Kahp’s second in command
4. Kodractus—Male Kobold, head of the KPD
5. Adrakt the Black—mysterious leader of the Naga Skulls. It is thought that he is not a true Dragonborn, but was born outside of the Arkhosian Republic in the misty swamps of the Yuan-ti near the Venduran Forests, but no-one has ever confirmed his serpentine origins.
6. General Zeakt—Commander of the Republic’s armed forces by virtue of seniority. It is well-known, however, that he and the Bular are not on the best of terms with one another and that Zeakt resents receiving orders from the “Sleeping Dragon.”
7. Magister Crupp—A wealthy industrial magnate who made his fortune off of the arms industry in the Great War. He has converted production over to civilian wares and resides in the so-called “Gear District.”
8. Chancelor Snezlemann—the second highest ranking official in the new Republic, Snezlemann is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has advised Apa that the only way to gain a favorable settlement for the Arkhosian Republic at the Verzai-Karno summit is to firmly re-establish law and order in the new Republic, lest the other parties at the negotiation table perceive the fledgling democracy as weak due to its domestic in-fighting.
