RPPR Actual Play: 4E Dungeons and Dragons – The New World Session 2 *NSFW*

By Ross

The New World
a 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons Campaign
Session 2

Players: Tom, Cody and Dan

IMPORTANT NOTE: This game is full of profanity, even by our standards. This is very much NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

Synopsis: The kingdoms of the old world have discovered a vast new continent across the ocean. Brave settlers have started the first colony in the net world. Among them, a small band of adventurers eager to earn glory and gold. In the first session, the characters ventured into the wilderness to find a source of fresh water. Upon finding a river, they came across a band of natives part of the The Black Raven tribe who fought them. After capturing one of the tribal warriors, the players learn of an ongoing tribal war and decide to talk to the other tribe, known as the Gray Fangs. The Gray Fangs tell them that a powerful water spirit can teach them a ritual that will conjure enough fresh water to supply the colony. However, after the characters ask for the spirit’s help, the spirit sends them to a dungeon in order to see if they are worthy.

The characters must find a way out of the dungeon in order to learn the ritual. Two groups stand in their way: a band of thieves and a tribe of primitive frog people. In this session, I called them tasloi, but in proper D&D lore they are called the Grippli. This mistake is corrected in the next session.

Due to a technical snafu on my part, the first session recording is gone. However all other sessions are backed up so this will not happen again.

    Yes! Profanity!

  2. Paul says:

And this whole time I thought that the RPPR family were performers Of “High Art” role-play! ; ) Now I find that they are just as dysfunctional as my group. As a side note I agree with what I believe was Ross’s claim that censoring or cutting out the profanity would make the whole game less “realistic” in terms of what a lot of groups are like. Even the mostly clean players at Yog-Sothoth.com let a few foul word fly. So I say keep gaming cursing.
p.s. Great AP guys, I like liked the GM player animosity in combat. I’VE GOT FUCKING SHADOWALK!

  3. Cody says:

I can’t help but note how my Sarah Palin joke is far from topical now.

Also, I like Ross’s line, “you come into a subterranean jungle . . . if you can believe that.”

I couldn’t believe that. I cannot stretch my imagination enough for that to be a plausible thing. Sorry.

Also, I forgot about the french guy. I want a french guy in our game.

  4. Patrick says:

Just got finished listening to this episode, you guys fucking SLAY me! Cody, you are a crack up! I liked your story about Luigi Coleman… Haven’t looked him up on Myspace. Did you ever find out what became of his failed romance?

  5. Shawn says:

I kind of enjoy the profanity. Of course, I don’t listen to it in an office or with little kids around, so I guess I understand why others might be offended. I also really enjoyed the ‘fishbowl’ aspect of the characters being stuck in a mini-world and having to choose sides. Kind of Temple of Elemental Evil-esque.

  6. Vince says:

I liked Tom’s moment of sagery. “Respect is earned, fear is instilled”. I will have to use that for one of my npc’s one day. Also the Gir reference was gold. I imagined Tom’s dragonkin drinking the water of knowledge and a momentary collage of random images began to fill his head with a semi-transparent image of a . . . monkey? . . . superimposed over them. The dragonkin then passes out. LOL.

The characters should give the water for free or just charge a small tax on it. Then use the tax proceeds to further colonize the new world in your names. Selling it for profit is only good for the short term. Until people can no longer afford your product and your customer base begins to die off due to dehydration, dissentery and other water-borne diseases from drinking dirty water out of desperation. “Greed is good” only works in Reaganomics and everyone knows Reaganomics sucks.

  7. Dawnsteel says:

“Frog Jesus dried up for your sins.”

Holy crap, I had to pull over because I was laughing too hard to drive.

  8. Cody says:

I’m not sure what happened to Luigi (or as my wife pronounces his name, “Loo-iggy”). I like not knowing what is going on with him.

As for Reaganomics . . . according to America’s number 1 most trusted fair and balanced news source, Fox News, Ronald Reagan is the greatest president in the entire multi-verse, so if it is good enough for Hannity, it is good enough for me. Charge the hell outta that water!

  9. silentjudas says:

    greatest. actual play. ever.
That was amazing guys! I loved it!

  10. Snowman says:

Just found your site and it is a riot! Been years since I have done any rpgs but this really makes me want to break out the dice again. Can’t wait to check out some more of your AP posts!

  11. Draago says:

No offense guys, but the descriptions are lack-luster and the character interactions are horrid. It could just be 4th Edition, but a lot of the roleplaying nowadays has depleted in many games. I apologize if I am coming of as an elitist, but wow…
“I kill things…” “Wanna come not die with us?” *yawn* That is just lame. I understand that you guys are friends and are used to one another, but blah! No atmosphere etc…

Throw in some music: Conan Soundtrack, LoTR, Midnight Syndicate, something…
